1 Introduction
This document is designed to help you during the basic training, and as an
aid when you first start working independently with imos.
The basic manual is intended both for users who wish to further the
knowledge obtained in the basic training and for those who want to teach
themselves the basics.
Because this is a basic training course, please refer to the imos online
help for more detailed explanations.
At the end of each chapter are Questions for clarification. These ques-
tions are for you to check independently that you have understood the
contents of each chapter.
The answers to the questions are given at the end of the training manual.

a brief introduction to imos
2. imos provides support with layout planning in the form of highly effi-
cient functions for insertions and adaptations. This means that designs
can be drawn up for even the most complex room situations. Cus-
tomer-specific standard and special solutions can be drawn very
quickly using the imos wizards.
• Rules are observed for the setting and passing on of fittings and con-
necting elements

Note:
The imos order number may be made up of letters and/or numbers. Al-
though you can use an order name consisting of more than 8 characters,
only the first 8 characters will appear in printouts of cut lists and in the
generation of NC files. Some industry programs and the post-processors
for NC generation work in DOS mode.
If the AutoCAD command “Save” is entered in the command line, then this
will simply save a DWG, an FXF and a WMF.
The database information for imos that is saved in files ending in DBF is
missing.

Four files are saved when you save an imos order: one with the order
name and the file extension *.fxf, which contains all the construction infor-
mation for imos; one with the order name and the file extension *.dwg,
which contains all the additional AutoCad drawings; one with the order
number and the file extension *.wmf, which has a preview of the order,
and one with the order number and file extension *.dbf, in which any
amended versions of the order are saved. These files are all saved in the
folder “...imos\ imorder\ order name“.

the cutout are straight.
4. Click on the button with the green check mark to complete the
settings.
You need to select a different display mode if you want to view the cutout
in the worktop.
The filler panel fitted between the base units “U_1B_1DT” and
“U_ECK_RECHTS” is too wide and needs to be modified.
1.
In the “Details” menu in the Man-
ager, click on the “Select edges”
button (1).
3.
Leave the entries in the order data window unchanged, and click on the
green check mark .
A message will appear telling you that an order directory of this name al-
ready exists.
3. How can you change the dimensions of a single part (e.g. filler pan-
els)?
4. How can you apply the cutout of a sink, for instance, to a component?
3.4 Rendering
Goal:
When rendering, ensure that surfaces and profiles are displayed in the
visualization, as they will not be rendered otherwise. Rendering principles
for materials will be displayed only if no coating is applied. Surfaces will be
displayed during rendering only if the components are allocated coatings
with render principles.
Rendering only displays objects that are set in the current visualiza-
tion mode. The settings in mode 5 are suitable for rendering.
3.4.2 Rendering
imos allocates the rendering principles in the data to the individual com-
ponents.
The window with the rendering dialog box will then appear.

4 Construction
Goal:
• construct a Vario,
• get to know the Vario dialog functions, and
• change components using the Manager.
During the course of this chapter, you will construct the media cabinet
shown below, change construction principles to suit requirements, and se-
lect materials.
Goal:
• construct a Vario.
To construct a new item in the Vario dialog, begin by opening the item
center using “Vario, Angolo or purchased parts” on the “Insert” folder un-
der the imos Manager, or “Insert” and menu item “Article”.
2.
1.
Now click on the “Create new” button (1) and then select “Vario” (2).
4.
3.
Note:
This folder allocates various components to the Vario. The active compo-
nents are highlighted in yellow.
3.
4.
2.
5.
1.
6.
7.
8.
9.
1. Please enter these values in the fields for the height, width and depth:
H/W/D 700/1400/500.
2. Click on the “Zoom all" button if you are unable to see the field in
light red properly.
Click on the CP buttons to open the Element Managers, and you can se-
lect the desired CP.
Information on CP names:
This is where you define the settings for the joints on the fronts, the con-
struction of the base, and any toenotch.
Click on the principle “3 mm” in the list of existing principles, and exit the
dialog using the button with the green check mark .
Use Linear Division to enter the size of the individual zones in the subdivi-
sions.
You will find detailed information on the possible subdivisions and linear
division in the imos Online Help.
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
4. Enter “1:2:1" in the entry field and press “Return”. There will now be
three zones inside the cabinet. With a set overall width of 1400 mm,
the outer zones are now 350 mm wide, and the middle one is twice
that, i.e. 700 mm.
MS: Partition
Now insert adjustable shelves in the various zones. To do so, first click on
the left zone of the cabinet (1).
2. 3.
4.
5.
1.
6.
4. Enter “1:1:1" in the field for linear division to create three areas of the
same size, and press “Return” to confirm.
E00: The adjustable shelves are not offset against the sides
Now define shelves that also use the “KP_EB_E00mm" construction prin-
ciple in the middle zone of the cabinet.
2.
3.
4.
1.
5.
3. For the linear division, enter “4{1}” to obtain four zones of the same
size. You can also enter “1:1:1:1” instead of “4{1}”.
Note:
The key combinations for “{“and “}” are Alt Caps and 7, and Alt Caps and
0.
2.
3.
5.
4.
1.
3. Activate the option field “Inherit Lineboring" to accept the line bores of
the outer panels for the partition in this zone.
4. Allocate a door to this zone. To do so, click on the option field to the
left of the button.
L: Left
1.
2.
3.
4. The zone heights are to be adjusted using “Increase total height". Ei-
ther click on the active button with the preview, or select “Change
overall height” in the drop-down menu. You can find out more on this
subject from the imos Online Help.
6. The base will now be displayed in the preview. The whole cabinet is
now 780 mm high, which you can check against the scale on the right
of the preview.
The specified height of 700 mm still applies to the carcass sides, but
without the base.
4.
5.
6.
Now all the cabinet needs are the shelves and the door in the right zone.
2. What linear division needs to be entered for three equally spaced ad-
justable shelves?
3. How can the hinge side of the item be changed in the Vario dialog at a
later stage?
4. Name two of the three methods of defining the item height when install-
ing a base.
Goal:
2.
1.
3.
Because the zone on the right is to have the same principles as the zone
on the left, with the exception of the hinge side, you can copy the left zone
and insert it on the right.
3. Move the mouse to the left zone you want to copy, and right-click the
mouse. Select “Copy zone" from the menu that is displayed.
3.
1.
2.
2. Right-click the mouse to display the selection menu. This time, select
“Paste zone" to transfer the properties of the left zone into the one on
the right.
3. Now change the hinge side of the door in the right zone by changing
the “default” to “right“.
“Default” means that the hinge settings in the construction principle will
be adopted. Use “right” and “left”, and these settings will be ignored for
this Vario.
Goal:
To continue with the construction of the article, click on the green check
mark in the Vario dialog.
You will now see the selection box for inserting the article. Press “Return”
to confirm and start the insertion dialog (1).
The command line asks you to set an insertion point for the item. Left-click
on the mouse to capture the origin (0,0,0) of the coordinate system with
the osnap (object capture).
Another tab will appear in the insertion dialog window. This tab specifies
the article dimensions. Check the dimensions for the height/width/depth
780/1400/500 and click on the green check mark to construct the
article in the drawing.
Close the item center by clicking on in the top right corner of the win-
dow.
In manager, click on
the but-
ton on the left side of
the screen.
This opens the Visu
manager, where you
select level 4 from the
“Detail Level” on the
first tab. In order to set
the desired detail
stage, left-click the
mouse on the but-
ton and, still holding
down the mouse key,
move the cursor to the
desired position.
Click on
to save
the settings.
Now the adjustable shelves and connectors for the article in the drawing
are displayed.
To hide the concealed lines, click on the “Hide” button . You will find this
button in the imos toolbox under “CAD functions”.
Goal:
These images will be displayed in the item center on the “Details” tab.
A WMF file with the name of the article is required in the imos / SYS / Info
/ Vario folder before you can view a preview in the item center.
The preview will always be the picture that is currently on your screen.
Thus, for instance, the isometric view “Southeast” would be a suitable
preview. Click on “Hide” to conceal the hidden lines.
Now open the item center by clicking on the “Article” button . You will
find this button in the imos “Construction” toolbox.
The item center can also be opened using the Manager tab “Insert” by se-
lecting “Vario, Angolo or purchased parts”, or from “Article” in the “Insert”
menu.
In the item center dialog box, select the imos_MEDIA cabinet from the di-
rectory “…Your company name…” and click on the “Details on/off” button
(1). One more tab will be added on the right of the dialog box.
1.
2.
The selected view will now appear as the article preview on the “Details”
tab.
Goal:
Note:
It is not imperative that you save the following changes in the existing
worktop principles as a new principle.
You can temporarily adopt the changes by clicking on the green check
mark . The changed worktop will then be used on the item, but the
principle will not be changed in the master data.
2.
Highlight the principle “STAN-
DARD” and enter
1. "A_PLATTE_MEDIA” in the
“Principle” field (1).
You will now make a few more changes using the tabs so that the worktop
meets the requirements for the media cabinet.
1.
2.
You can add strips to the edges of the worktop using the “Strips” folder.
1. Deactivate the strip at the back by clicking on the rear strip in the pre-
view.
2. The red lines will be displayed as broken lines, and the corresponding
component definition at the bottom will no longer be active (2); no strip
will be added to the edges.
3.
3. Enter the values shown in the graphic. The representation on the right
provides a preview of the settings. Negative values mean the item pro-
trudes, while positive values mean it is inset.
The construction of the worktop is now complete. Now all you have to do
is select the correct component definition for the worktop (material, profile
and surface).
4.
1.
2.
2. Click on the button with the green check mark to return to the
worktop settings dialog.
1. Transfer the newly created worktop principle into the “…your company
name…” folder. To do so, highlight the principle and, pressing on the
left mouse key, drag it into the folder. When it is highlighted in blue, the
principle has been moved and you can release the mouse key.
4.6 Manager II
Goal:
In the “Tools” menu you can get to this function using the item “Visu Man-
ager”.
2.
The cabinet will now be displayed with its connectors and interior ele-
ments.
As you can see in the task for the media cabinet, the front edge of the
worktop is rounded. You will now allocate an existing contour to the edge,
using the properties window in Manager.
In the “Details” tab of the Manager, click on “Select edges” in the top
row.
As shown below, select the front edge of the worktop and confirm your se-
lection by right-clicking the mouse or pressing “Return”.
In this section, you will use imos Manager to generate circular cutouts in
various components.
1. Draw an auxiliary
line (1), 70 mm
long, starting in the
middle of the back
2. panel and running
towards the front of
the cabinet. The
diameter of the cir-
cle (2) is 50 mm,
and the center is
right at the end of
the auxiliary line.
Note:
The back panel will appear in the list of elements in the Manager.
Now click on the “Front view” button to switch to the front view.
1.
Draw the circles for the
cutouts in the back
panel. Draw another two
auxiliary lines (1) + (2)
as shown.
You will now apply the circles you have drawn as cutouts.
To do so, on the “Details” tab of the Manager, click on the “Selection Filter”
button .
This opens the window in which you can select the filter criteria.
1.
2.
3.
4.
The adjustable shelves have now all been selected from the list of ele-
ments, as you will be able to see by the broken lines in the drawing and
the list of elements on the left side of the screen. The circular cutouts are
to be generated only in the shelves in the middle zone.
It does not matter that the outer shelves have also been selected, because
the inner contour does not cut them, and so cannot be created in these
components.
Note:
2.
Select “Through Hole” (2)
and click on the but-
ton to confirm.
1.
The inner contours must be visualized so you can see the cutouts in the
drawing. This setting is automatically included in visualization mode 6.
In this exercise, the media cabinet is filtered for existing materials and
components. In the next step, the selected components are allocated a
new material using the Manager.
The doors and shelves will be assigned the material “FPY_AH”, and the
other components are to be made of “FPY_BB”.
Click on the “Selection Filter” button to open the selection window for
the filter criteria. The button is on the “Details” tab in the Manager.
This opens the screen in which you can define the filter criteria.
1.
2.
4.
3.
Every component of
the item with
“$MAT_AUSSEN” as
the material will now
appear in the upper
area of the Manager.
They are all high-
lighted, and so they
can all be edited to-
gether.
• Click on to open the dialog for the material master data where mate-
rials can be set up and selected from existing folders.

Goal
Use the polyline extension to transfer the outline geometry of the shelf unit
to the shelves and the work surface.
The outline geometry of the shelf unit is defined by the polyline that was
drawn at the beginning of this chapter. It runs along the lower rear edge of
the shelf unit.
Because the cover panel constructed on top of the shelf unit projects
beyond the sides and front of the unit, the polyline has to be extended to
facilitate the continuation of the contour. It must project laterally over the
components to be connected.
Command line:
** EXTEND **

Enter “200” mm in the command line and press “Return” to confirm.
Proceed in the same way with the other endpoint, but shift this one by 200
mm in the positive direction on the x-axis.
You can now copy the polyline and insert it at two new points.
Click on “Copy” in the AutoCAD toolbox “Change”, and then select the
polyline of the outline geometry. Right-click to confirm.
Command line:
3. Specify second point of shift or <use first point of shift >: 480

6 Drawing output
The goals of this chapter are:
The drawing output functions are all contained in the “Output” menu.
The output functions are used to dimension components and items, place
cuts, and create exploded views.
The functions are described and applied using the Vario “imos_MEDIA”.
Goal:
6.1.1 Settings
You can load and create principles for dimensioning items and
components under “Parameters”.
This opens the window in which the settings for dimensioning components
are specified.

green check mark to exit the “ Dimensioning settings” dialog
box.
When you have selected the function, you will see the pickbox from which
you select the next component to be processed.
You will be asked to select a viewing side. This side determines whether
you will see the component from above or below after rotating in imos.
This changes the view, and you will see a top view of the individual
component.
Command line:
The point you select will determine the position of the dimensioning.
If you click on the bottom right of the drawing, the dimensioning will be
moved to the left at the top.
The top menu bar changes when the dimensioning function is selected.
The new menu can be used, for example, to apply drawing frames directly
to the component dimensioning.
This now opens a window in which you can select the folder and the file
name under which you can save the drawing.
2.

As you can see in the list, the entire project is now listed cumulatively by
description, material and finished sizes.
5. What do the names “Field above” and “Field below” in the list
configuration mean, and where is the content in the lists?
This chapter is intended to give you an idea of the names you can use for
your master data to make the purposes for which they are used absolutely
clear.
By creating master data, you are setting the foundation for later
construction using imos. In earlier chapters you learned about the master
data hierarchy, so you will know that any changes in materials, for
instance, will have an effect where they are used in imos constructions.
When creating your own data, you should check to see whether this
method of name allocation suits your purposes.
Use the following tables to establish the naming conventions for your
master data.

Goal:
The examples shown in the following section differ fundamentally from the
master data created in imos. This difference is intended to show you what
information you can already include in the naming of individual master
data items.
When creating your own master data, consider first what information you
require when naming, how this information can be abbreviated and still
make sense, and what naming conventions you will use for your master
data.

for material is to be issued in the Organizer. What field do you need to
select from the Organizer?
How to proceed:
Go to the page in this chapter where the field selection for material master
data is explained, and you will see the following illustration.
9.
There is a table on the same page that explains the name of the field
content in the Organizer.
2. Look at the table to see the name of the line with no. 9.
The name on line 9 is “Core material Description”.
8 Material
9 Core material Description
Material master data
10 Grain index
34 Thickness unfin
So now you know that you have to select “Core material Description” in
the Organizer field selection to issue the information from the material
master data.
Now you want to know what the issued information means and where it
came from.
Note:
The sequence in the table is the same as the sequence in the field
selection. The illustration above shows that the field “Core material
Description” covers about half of the available possibilities, so you can
also look for the field in the middle of the field selection table.
You will find the “Core material Description” field on line 9 in the second
column of the table.
The right column of the table now explains what the issued information
means and where it comes from.
3. Finally, you can go to the page with the field selection for profile master
data to find out where the information needs to be entered in imos.
8 Material
9 Core material Description
Material master data
10 Grain index
34 Thickness unfin
… …
This now tells you that the information came from the content of the
“Description 1” field.

Setting up material
5. Save the newly created material and move it into the desired directory.
Creating a coating
New coatings are created in the Surface Master Data Manager as follows:
5. Save the newly created material and move it into the desired directory.
Creating a profile
1. Open the Contour Wizard, select the function “Profile geometry” and
then “Draw contour in ACAD”.
3. This opens the contour editor where the contour is saved. You can also
change the dimension of contours in the contour editor.
4. Save a preview of the contour in the directory “...imos\ SYS\ info\ SLD”
by displaying the contour in the ACAD using the Contour Wizard, and
creating a wmf file of the geometry in the folder using the import/export
function in the system menu. The name may consists of a maximum of
8 characters.
5. Now save the contour as a new profile in the Profile Master Data
Managerby saving the “STANDARD” profile under the new name, and
loading a preview on the “Settings” tab using the buttons
and .
6. Enter the desired data in the corresponding fields on the tabs, or select
the desired settings and save the newly created profile.
Procedure:
4. On the tabs on the right side of the window, change the data so that
rounded corners are created with an absolute value of 3 mm. (The
length of the line segment was designed to be variable and does not
need to be changed.)
2. Highlight the part definition “STANDARD” and save it under the name
of the part definition to be created.
6. Change the edge settings so that the transition is “long”, and the
application is “edge before surface” and “edge after CNC”.
8. Move the part definitions into the folder “…your company name…”.
2. Highlight a CP that is similar to the new part, and save it under the new
name.
3. Select the new part properties on the tabs (part definition, structural
details).
Back
: rotation point
: direction of rotation
In the first step of the item rotation, the front elements and back are turned
90 degrees around the corresponding rotation points.
After rotation, the items are all folded to the right (seen from the front) so
they are positioned horizontally. Thus either the outer or inner side of the
part is at the top.
The following table displays the edge situation of the individual items.

Top surface: outside
Bottom surface: inside

Left side:
Top surface: outside
Bottom surface: inside
Front
Back
• straight wall
• L-shaped wall left
• L-shaped wall right
• U-shaped
• from one polyline
• free wall construction
2. The position of the guideline determines which side the wall should be
on, relative to the given layout. It determines whether the wall is
constructed to the right, left or middle of the direction of drawing.
4. To adopt the cutout for a sink, you first have to separate the polylines
for the sink into individual line segments using the AutoCAD command
“Explode”. Select the item in which the cutout is to be generated in the
next step. Select the command “Polyline as cutout” in the directory
“Transfer AutoCAD elements”. You will find this directory in the window
with editing methods.
Chapter 4 “Construction”
Answers for Section 4.1.4
1. Open the item center to get to the Vario dialog. Select “Insert” and then
“Article” from the menu, or select “Vario, Angolo or purchased parts”
from the “Insert” tab in the manager, the “Item” button from the imos
toolbox of the same name, or “Vario” from the “Master data” tab in the
manager.
In the upper area of the window, click on the “New” button and
select “Vario” from the menu.
2. The linear division is “4{1}”, but you can also enter “1:1:1:1”.
3. The hinged side of the door can be changed on the first tab in the
“Vario” dialog box by activating the corresponding option field.
2. The circle must be inside the viewing level of the components, i.e.
parallel to the surface of the component. Because circles are always
drawn only in the x/y plane, the coordinate system must have been
adjusted to the viewing plane first.
4. The “Current selection” in the filter dialog refers to the elements that
are highlighted in the drawing or list of elements on the “Details” tab in
the manager.
1. Only the line bores are specified in the structural properties for side
panels. This includes the component side from which the line bores are
bored, the size of the bores with the grid, and the height and depth
reference of the line bore.
2. You can use the search function in the Element Manager to find the
appropriate side panel. To do so, enter the name of the side panel and
click on “Search”. In the list of search results, double-lick on the side
panel. The side will be highlighted in the corresponding directory, and
can be inserted.
3. The standard sizes are used only in the preview for the proportions of
the side, and play no part in the construction.
4. The part definition and edge situation are displayed in the preview of
the first tab.
3. A left and a right panel as well as a top and a bottom shelf must be
available before shelves can be inserted, because these components
are used for reference purposes.
4. The angles of the front and back edges with regard to the sides are
selected on the “Front edge” and “Back edge” tabs. This is important
for sides of different depths. The actual settings are explained in
greater depth in the preview.
3. The position of the handles is specified in the handle principle. You can
select a handle principle by clicking on “Pull 1”, Pull 2” or “Pull 3” on the
“Pull” tab. You can select and change existing handle principles and
create new ones in the dialog.
4. Changes to the front of a drawer are saved in the “Front” folder in the
Drawer Manager. The saving of the drawer principle includes only the
choice of the front, and not any subsequent changes to the front.
6. Use “To parent Level” to get to the component level. Open the
component directory by clicking on the in front of the component
name and highlight the desired edge.
You will find these functions on the “Details” tab in the manager.
1. It could be that this dimensioning is not included leveling the x/y plane
of the coordinate system. In this case you must adjust the coordinate
system to the view direction.
3. After a drawing has been saved, only the drawing data exists. The
imos data must be obtained from the database by opening the order
again.
4. Section drawings contain only those details that are set in the
corresponding visualization mode. To display profiles, change to
visualization mode 6. Profiles are also displayed if the corresponding
setting has been specified on the “Visualization” tab in the Visu
Manager.
1. The drawing content can be edited in the model area, and the “drawing
environment” in the paper area – that is to say, the drawing frame, for
instance. Use the buttons and to switch between the two.
These buttons are on the status bar at the bottom of the screen. The
same functions are available via the “Output” menu and submenu
“Border”.
2. The component data (height, thickness etc.), order data (order number,
viewing data principle etc.) and drawing data (scale, viewing direction
etc.) can be displayed in the output fields.
3. The information on the “Colors” and “Order info” tabs can be evaluated
in the output fields of the drawing frame and in the Project Manager.
1.
The dialog for allocating orders to a project is started. In the dialog you
can specify how often the orders are to be allocated to which project.
1. The various tabs of the Organizer bar contain the projects set up in
imos, imos orders, links for the output of lists, labels and dimensioned
component drawings. Also, projects can be transferred and catalogs
created of articles in imos.
2. You can check the properties of a list link by right-clicking on the link
and selecting “Link properties” from the context menu.
3. From the link context menu, select the command “Configure BOM” to
change the list configuration. This opens the List Configuration Wizard.
4. The column width of the lists is given on the second page of the List
Configuration Wizard in the column “Width in %”. The values are
percentages, so the total must be 100.
5. The name “Field above” describes the upper line in the cells on the list;
“Field below” is the line below.
Each cell of a list contains two lines in which the values for “Field
above” and “Field below” appear.
Each line of the table shown below equates to a column in the list.
Thus the serial number appears in the first column in the top field of
this list, and the name of the component in the bottom field.
