HISTORY
UHL+Walker was founded in Toronto in 1965, quickly evolving to the
HISTORY interdisciplinary model of today under the leadership of Jesse Walker, Sam
Uebelacker, Darin Harding, and Ben Larson. The partners committed them-
PHILOSOPHY
selves to a global practice in the 1980s with the opening of expansion
SERVICES offices in New York, London, and Hong Kong. The Partnership grew as new
MARKETING partners joined the firm, broadening the fields of expertise and areas of
PROJECTS practice. Today, UHL+Walker offers a wide range of services which, with the
close integration thereof, allows us to reach new and higher levels of design.
LEADERSHIP
LOCATIONS In lieu of subscribing to fashion and polemic, UHL+Walker aims to deliver
thoughtful, original and contemporary architecture that conveys a sense of
humanism and purpose while fulfilling programmatic requirements. This is
achieved through an intensive collaboration with clients and consultants and
careful investigation into the best ways to accommodate the program.
UHL+Walker exercises economy of gesture and meticulous attention which
results in the highest standards of execution, delight in pure beauty, and
respect for the client's need to be inspired and engaged.

UHL +
PHILOSOPHY
Buildings should serve a higher purpose. We believe great architecture
HISTORY shapes the human experience, improves the quality of the built environment
and helps conserve the earth's resources. Our goal always is to cut through
PHILOSOPHY
the complexity to make life easier and better for people.
SERVICES
MARKETING collaboration is inspiration:
PROJECTS At UHL+Walker, we believe that our clients have the power to change the
world through their progressive desires and needs. We find that forming a
LEADERSHIP
partnership with our clients helps to create the foundation for a highly collab-
LOCATIONS orative design strategy. We strive to sustain this mission by creating
environments that advance the exchange of knowledge so that everyone
involved are inspired to reach their full potential.

Our approach is multidisciplinary, bringing together specialists in areas such

as architectural design, engineering, education, technology and sustainabil-
ity to create a process that truly inspires innovation.

education and learning is priority:

Architecture for education is our passion. Our vision is to combine our 40
plus years of experience and our solid reputation for trust and service with
highly innovative, research-driven design solutions focused on the future. We
think those solutions have the potential to transform learning.

Designing a learning space is a journey that we take together to find the

right answers to the right questions until inspiration yields a result the client
never expected—the fruits of collaboration and the creative process.

We promise to be champions of education. From technology to curriculum

and sustainability, we understand how design affects learning. Our participa-
tion on national councils, our advocacy efforts and our local educator
advisory groups give us all comprehensive understanding of the evolution of
education and how we can support our clients' efforts both in and out of the
classroom.

UHL +
PHILOSOPHY
sustainable design:
HISTORY Sustainable design has long been a part of practice at UHL+Walker. We
embrace and design with responsibility to advance sustainable design for
PHILOSOPHY
every building type, geographic region and budget level. Our people are
SERVICES
impassioned by the opportunity to design healthy, environmentally friendly
MARKETING buildings that improve our planet's overall environmental condition and
PROJECTS educating our clients regarding the benefits of building “green.”
LEADERSHIP
Our commitment to sustainability engages us with our clients in new ways as
LOCATIONS
we introduce them to the financial and operational benefits of green
buildings, lower energy, reduced waste and water use, lower environmental
and emissions costs, improved operations and maintenance, and most
importantly increased productivity from a healthier workspace.

Currently we have over 30 LEED-certified (Leadership in Environmental and

Energy Design) professionals on staff and affiliations with the U.S. Green
Building Council.

UHL +
PHILOSOPHY
design to build process:
HISTORY From early project conceptualization through the final phases of construc-
tion, our variety of experienced design teams approaches each project with
PHILOSOPHY
the integrated goals of creating superior design solutions, discovering
SERVICES
environmental value and balance, and building excellent client relations. Our
MARKETING office support team includes designers and coordinators who assist with the
PROJECTS production work and client communications. We have also pooled a tight
LEADERSHIP network of talented designers and innovators that have been integrated to
allow a design team to be formed to meet the specific requirements of all
LOCATIONS
projects. Through early coordination with the client and design team,
common ecological goals can be mapped to achieve site sustainability
across multiple levels of the design and construction processes.

When a project enters the office of UHL + Walker it typically follows a

common path. Initial meetings and early site visits establish the functional,
ecological, and aesthetic goals that will drive the design. Through physical
and digital models, sketches, elevations, and plan view renderings the princi-
pal design features are agreed upon, and construction cost projections are
then determined. When a drawing set is complete, coordination is shifted to
the contractor and we continue responsibility for the construction process.
During construction, management meetings ensure a continuing team
relationship between architects, engineers, landscape architects, planners,
contractors, and clients. Our post-project studies and analysis solidify our
interests in long-term success and our commitment to the creation of a
satisfying and consciences environment.

HISTORY UHL+Walker has an integrated marketing division that allows the company
to search for clients. The marketing team within the main office consists of
PHILOSOPHY
5 people working to attract clients and publicize UHL+Walker’s achieve-
SERVICES
ments and designs. The marketing teams have been trained to have a good
MARKETING understanding of the nature of UHL+Walker’s design philosophies. Market-
PROJECTS ing actively looks and screens clients for the greatest compatibility between
LEADERSHIP the client and the entire design team, looking for clients who will be able to
use our entire repertoire of services. The marketing team also works hard
LOCATIONS
to get UHL+Walker into many architectural, engineering, and many other
publications as a way to get the name out to clients more effectively. In
working closely with design teams the marketing department is able to
gauge the strengths of the office and look for clients searching for similar
values.

CTA Station

Location: Chicago, Illinois
Studio Head: Sam Uebelacker

The redesign of the Adams & Wabash CTA Elevated Station also included a
nearby plot of land with which to develop. The nearby location of a large
event area but lack of a smaller event area in the area led to the develop-
ment of such a venue. The open plaza would now be able to be used for a
variety of uses, from a farmers market to a small scale concert. The sound
from the trains are mitigated by a glass wall that extends along the western
edge of the plaza. The redesign for the station allowed for views to both the
Art Museum and the Sears Tower.

Museum of Steel

Location: Pittsburg, Pennsylvania
Studio head: Sam Uebelacker

The museum of steel is located along the Monongahela River near

Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. UHL+Walker came up with an engineering solution
allowing for the sinuous design of the museum skin. The lattice of steel
forms the structure of the skin and is seamlessly integrated with the glass
and composite panels composing the barrier from the elements. The
museum spans over a reflection pond and consists of a restaurant overlook-
ing the river and two main galleries with soaring catwalks over each for a
different journey depending on which path you decide to take.

Urban Design

The realization seems to be fully apparent that cities need good housing to
become the vibrant centers of cultural and social life that they once were,
and thus public and political support for urban infill housing is on the rise.
Urban infill housing sparks neighborhood revitalization. Not only do new
residents pay property taxes, but they also spend money. New residents
spur retailing, religious activities, restaurant openings, cultural activities and
events, office development, and the development of parks and recreational
areas.

The Boise Branch Library was constructed with the help of a donation from
the Idaho Concrete Masonry Association. The exterior and interior columns
were constructed with concrete masonry blocks. This multiple floor library
has a children and teen section located on the main floor, with the adult
stacks residing on the second floor. The columns are offset with the second
floor’s design of curves sweeping back toward the center of the building.
