INSTRUCTIONS FOR CEMA EQUATION CONVEYOR DESIGN IN MICROSOFT EXCEL Load spread sheet into Excel 5.0 program.

This program is based on the 5th edition of

the CEMA (conveyor equipment manufacturers Association handbook).

The spread sheet consists of pages 1-5. Page 1 Volumetric Data Page 2 Physical Data Geometry Data Accessories Miscellaneous Frictions Page 3 Idler Data Page 4 Calculated Results Page 5 Ky Analysis Data in shaded areas of the spreadsheet must be input to complete the calculation. In some cases the shaded areas include the most common value to speed up data input. These values should be reviewed by the user and overridden if required by actual conditions. Note: Standard values will NOT necessarily produce the most conservative results. Values shown on the screen in RED are generated by equations. If you override these numbers you will erase the equation and replace it with a value. Warning: The only problem this poses is when you are making additional conveyor runs, by modifying the previous spreadsheet. The value you input will be the conveyor standard until you load a new spreadsheet. FOR EXAMPLE 36 conveyor handling 50 pcf material the program will automatically select 4.5 feet as the idler spacing (see table page 3). If you override this value and input 4.0 spacing the program will use 4.0 feet.
If you than want to run another conveyor by modifying the previous spreadsheet instead of loading a new spreadsheet the idler spacing will be 4.0 unless you manually

override it. All files can be saved by name onto the hard drive or disc. This will enable you to retrieve them for future revisions. Follow Excel save instructions.

Input values for capacity, material density, and angle of repose. Program will calculate angle of surcharge. Input lump and moisture % (not used by program). Input idler troughing angle. Program will calculate cross sectional area and belt speed for all belt widths from 18 to 108 and provide the belt speed required for that belt width to handle the input data. Find the belt width that corresponds with a reasonable belt speed for the application. The belt speeds are 100% CEMA loading with standard edge distance. It is normallyrecommended to select a speed 10% higher than the table value. Program will provide the load ratio. You can change belt speed and width and the load ratio will automatically recalculate.

Input conveyor length (horizontal). Input conveyor lift net * Program will calculate C/C length. Note: For complex profiles it is suggested that you oven-ride the C/C length with the actual value since the program uses this length for calculation. * Standard value for ambient temperature is 320F-input actual value. * Standard value for belt sag is 2%-input actual value. Belt cleaner and V-plow friction use 5# / in. input actual value for cleaners and plows used. The standard for pulley friction uses the reduced values in appendix A of the CEMA book based on the approximate belt tension + 100 additional pounds for the drive pulley. For the table values of pulley friction change Y to N. If steel cable belt is used change N to V This only changes pulley friction when the previous Y is selected.

Weight of material per foot calculated by formula. Belt weight selected from table based on belt width and material density. Table does NOT include material density greater than 130, program will use belt weight in column 3 for these applications. Belt weight plus material weight calculated by program. Idler roll diameter is required input standard value is 6. Idler series is required input standard value is C. Troughing idler spacing selected from table by program. Return idler spacing is standard 10 and may be overridden.

Idler Ai factor is selected from table by program. Idler load is calculated and should be compared to actual ratings in table applying appropriate service factors. Input data should be modified as necessary.

Completely calculated by program. There is extra line where miscellaneous items such as belt driven trippers may be included for special cases. This line could also be used to input shear forces if the conveyor is under a hopper and acting as a feeder.

Completely calculated by program. In special cases it may be desirable to unhide the hidden calculation boxes. Cell Vi contains the average tension to calculate Ky. If this value is overridden the program will calculate Ky in cell V14 and also show this value in cell B29 and use it for calculation on page 4 cell B 11.
