Building/Assemble a Desktop Computer in 10 (Ten) Steps: Having prepared all the materials and equipment needed, and applying the safety precautions or the Occupational Health and Safety Policies we can start now in building a desktop computer. 1. Put the processor in the cpu socket of the motherboard according to its right alignment. Lock the processor by using the locking lever of the cpu socket and place its cpu fan & heatsink (Note: do not forget the cpu fan power connector that should be attach in the mobo). If the processor doesnt have

thermal pastes apply a rice size amount of it. (Note: Too much thermal paste will cause the heatsink to absorb less heat.) 2. Place the memory card on its DIMM/SIMM slot based on its notch. Install the motherboard now on the PC Case. Make sure all the screw holes of the MOBO match up the PC case stand offs. Screw the motherboard using a phillips screw driver. 3. Install the cards in the MOBO like video card on the PCIe/AGP slot, LAN card and sound card on the PCI slot (Note: Sometimes LAN card and sound card is optional because some motherboard has built-in technologies for these cards) make sure you put the screw firmly. 4. Install the hard disk and the optical drive (CD/DVD RW/Rom), also floppy disk drive if you have, in its right location and screw it properly. 5. Attach the SATA/PATA (IDE) cables from the motherboard to the hard disk, CD/DVD drive and floppy disk drive. 6. Connect all the front panel led wires of the PC case to the motherboard. 7. Install the power supply unit and screw it on the PC case, attach all the power connectors in the motherboard, hard disk, CD/DVD drive and sometimes on the additional fan in the PC case. 8. Double check all the connections the put then cover of the PC case to close it. 9. Attach the keyboard, mouse, monitor in the assembled unit and its power cable at the back of the power supply into the AVR or UPS. 10. Test your computer now by turning it on.

Computer Operating System is a computer program or software that is needed by the computer to function properly. OS also provides a graphical user interface (GUI) to the user so it can easily be use to operate. Operating System also requests the task to the hardware to do whatever the user instruct to the machine such as printing etc. Device driver is software that interacts with the operating system so that the hardware can communicate with the OS. Some device driver is already included in the operating system when you install it but some are not, you need to install it separately especially if your hardware is a new one. In Computer Hardware Servicing NC II, the task 4 is about installing an Operating System and its hardware Device Drivers. The following are the steps in installing the OS and device driver:

1. Restart your computer, upon rebooting tap or press F2 or Delete key to access the BIOS of your computer. (Note: Not all computers use the same key to access BIOS it depends on your computer or your motherboard) 2. Inside the BIOS, locate the BOOT Device Priority of your computer and assign CD/DVD Rom as the First Boot Device. 3. Put your CD installer of OS (Ex. Windows XP) in the CD/DVD drive and then Press F10 to save and exit in the BIOS. The computer will reboot now. 4. Upon rebooting, if you see Press Any key to Boot from CD, press Enter or any key you want to start the installation of your operating system. (Note: You should wait for this carefully because this will last for 5 seconds only for you to press a key.) 5. Be patient in waiting for your OS as it loads the necessary files for installation, when the computer ask you what to do after loading the necessary files choose Press Escape key on your keyboard to Install fresh Copy of Windows XP. 6. In the License Agreement part, press F8 key to agree. 7. On the Disk Partitioning part, you can Delete/Create new partitions depends on the size you want to do. To DELETE partition press D and L to confirm the deletion, to CREATE partition press C and assign the size you want and press Enter. 8. Choose Drive C: after creating the partition and choose Format using NTFS file system Quick or you can also select the full formatting. (Note: Make sure you choose the NTFS file system.) 9. After formatting, Windows XP will start the installation now. When the computer asks you the Product Key of your OS, supply the correct and valid Product/Serial key. 10. In the Network Settings choose Typical Settings and for the WorkGroup name do not change the WORKGROUP for the default settings. 11. Windows XP will now complete the installation and the computer will restart automatically again. 12. After rebooting, It will ask now if you want to turn-on Automatic Updates or not and this will be depend on you. 13. And then the computer will ask for the User Name/Account of the computer this will also be depends on your choice. 14. Lastly, the computer will ask you if you want to Register with Microsoft Now? If you dont have Internet connection you can choose Not Right Now option. 15. Congratulation you successfully install a fresh copy of Windows XP operating system. How to Install / Update Device Driver in Windows XP 1. Put your CD that contains the device driver in your CD / DVD-ROM. 2. If AutoRun is enabled in your Computer wait for the Installation Wizard, if not, Open My Computer and double-click the ROM where you inserted your CD driver. 3. Click Install and follow the Installation Wizard. 4. Click Finish when the driver is installed in your Computer 5. If the Computer asks you to Reboot or Restart your system do so. How to Manually Install / Update Device Driver in Windows XP 1. Right-click My Computer on your Desktop (or click Start on your Taskbar then right-click My Computer) 2. Choose Properties 3. Click the Hardware Tab 4. Click on Device Manager 5. Choose the hardware category your hardware relates to and click the + symbol next to it. 6. If you found the Unknown Device or the Device that you want to update, right-click it and choose UPDATE Driver

7. Browse the location where the driver files reside. This will install a new driver or update an existing driver for your hardware. 8. Sometimes you need to reboot your Computer to apply the changes that you made to your system.

The task #5 of the CHS Assessment is all about Networking where in the first part you should create a straight-through and crossover cable, then connecting your PCs using basic LAN configuration, applying IP Address Class C, sharing drives/folders, drive mapping and printer sharing. Creating Straight-through and Crossover Cable, heres the pattern for the color wiring arrangement:

To create a straight-through cable you can choose in both type of wiring standard above but make sure both ends correspond to the same color of wires. Creating backups for your files is very important to have another copy of your files when your OS crash because of computer viruses/malwares or system malfunctioning.

How to Use BACKUP / RESTORE (NTBackup) Creating Backups in Windows XP using NTBackup: Open My Documents Create a New Folder in My Documents and rename it as MyFiles. Copy a sample picture or music file and paste it in your MyFiles folder. After that we can start now creating our backup, by clicking Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Backup 5. In the Backup/Restore Wizard, click Next > Choose Backup Files & Settings > Let me choose what to Backup > Next > Location: My Documents > Check MyFiles Folder > Next > Browse or save it in Drive D: > Rename your backup (Ex. Note: The difference between Alternate Location and Single Folder restoration, in alternate location when you restore your backup there are lots of folder that you will open before you can see your actual file or folder, in single folder its obvious from its name you can only see a single or one folder so you can view your file immediately when you open that folder and the example of this is the Program Files folder.
