Exam motive: Echocardiogram for screening of dilated cardiomyopathy and electrocardiographic abnormalities associated with DCM of the Serra da Estrela. Cardiac and respiratory Auscultation without any alterations to report.

Echocardiographic report: Left atrium normal-sized when compared to the aortic root diameter 1.44 (upper limit 1.6). Aortic root diameter (2.63) within the normal range for weight and breed of "Roscas" (range 2.27 to 3.46 cm). Normal-sized left ventricle. Wall thickness and LV internal diameter within the normal range. Ejection fraction calculated by Simpson and fractional shortening calculated Teicholz within the confidence interval taking into account the weight and the race of "Roscas". The reference ranges used for the race are published by Lus de Lima Lobo in his doctoral thesis about this particular breed. Mitral valve apparatus fine and competent without any observed changes in trans-mitral flow. Not observed images consistent with mitral regurgitation when interrogated with color Doppler. Aortic and pulmonary without any valvular morphologic changes neither flow changes to report. Right ventricle when normal-sized evaluated subjectively, the left ventricle (25 to 30% the V.E). Tricuspid flow with no changes to report. However was possible to observe a minimal tricuspid regurgitation it was hemodinamically insignificant and disappeared once the heart rate raised up 80 bpm. This regurgitation is thought to be related with a long isovolumetric contraction phase and yet completely physiologic. Diagnosis and therapeutical recommendations: Electrocardiographic monitoring was performed during echocardiography (approximately 30 minutes). It was no observed any extrasystole or arrhythmic episode. Special attention was paid to sinus pauses because they may be the first sign of change of electrical conduction in myocardial Serra da Estrela. Diagnosis: Echocardiography within normal taking into account the reference values published previously by Lus de Lima Lobo, DVM, Phd. Excludes the diagnosis of Dilated Cardiomyopathy at the time of examination. Echocardiographic follow-up is recommended yearly.
