Edmodo Training Program Implementation and Evaluation Report

Module Overview and Description:

The Edmodo Instructional module adapted from the Instructional Plan Report Edmodo Tutorial (Faison, Pomeroy, Wroble, Sutliff & Dains, 2012) includes four lessons on digitizing a classroom using the online program Edmodo. The first three lessons teach how to create a teacher account, student account, and how to use the Notes feature in a student account and teacher account. The last lesson includes all the other basic features of Edmodo such as Polls, Quizzes, Events, and Alerts. The training module asks learners to perform steps on Edmodo in order to complete the module lessons.

Description of Implementation

I began the session by demonstrating how to use the adobe portfolio of training materials. A few of my trainees already had Edmodo accounts, so I asked them to start working on lesson two, because they had already completed lesson one. I then discovered that because we were on district computers, we could not create student accounts, so we had to skip lesson 2. Instead, I showed everyone how to add my group code to their teacher accounts so they could access the Edmodo classroom that I had set up, and then they proceeded to explore the materials and try out some features of Edmodo. There was about fifteen minutes of work time, and then I ended the training by showing the trainees the Edmodo quiz where I uploaded the survey questionnaire. At this point, one of my trainees had left the training early, so only two of my trainees were able to complete the survey. This indicates that the best mode of implementing the survey would be

asynchronously. The trainer can start the training with a brief fifteen minute meeting or an e-mail to ensure that the trainees understand how to use the training materials and can access them, and also that they are aware of the questionnaire that must be completed as well as any other requirements the individual trainer wants to include in the session. Analysis of Evaluation Data To evaluate the module, I analyzed the questionnaire that my trainees completed at the end of the training. The seven questions focused on two areas: comfort level of the learner with using the features of Edmodo, and the use of each Edmodo feature. There were two additional questions about the content and methods used in the actual training module. The two trainees who completed the questionnaire both indicated that they had no suggestions or concerns about changing the module. They both offered positive feedback on the depth of the training materials. The graph below indicates the comfort level of the two trainees that completed the survey. The graph clearly shows that both trainees have a high comfort level with the basic skills on Edmodo after completing the training. Question 1 and 2 address the comfort level with logging in and using the teacher account and student account respectively. Question 3 refers to the comfort level of creating notes. This corresponds directly with lessons 1, 2, and 3. Trainee #2 indicated that she would like to play around with the Edmodo features a bit more in order to gain a little more familiarity with the program.

The next graph indicates which features the trainees feel like they have experience with after completing the one hour training. This is valuable data, because it indicates which features the trainees were the most interested in learning how to use. Looking at the graph, it is clear that both trainees spent time working on the library, quizzes, notes, and replies. This indicates that these features are higher priority because the trainees wanted to learn more about them. It also shows that there was not enough time for trainees to access all of the advanced features in lesson 4, so they had to chose their areas of interest.

The next graph shows which Edmodo features the trainees intend to use in their own classroom. Again, this is valuable information, because it indicates which features were the most

applicable to each specific trainee. After seeing each feature in action, the trainees indicated that the library, notes, and replies are the top three Edmodo features for their own classrooms.

I am interested in the implications of the survey. According to the results, the notes and replies are popular Edmodo features that are covered explicitly in the module. The notes and replies features of Edmodo make a good focus for the third lesson, because they are a basic feature of Edmodo that all learners need to master. However, the library is a popular Edmodo feature that is not explicitly covered in the module, and is only introduced as the topic of an assignment within my Edmodo classroom. This indicates that the module needs to be revised to include the library tool as one of the explicit lessons in the advanced features. While the polls, quizzes, alerts, and assignments were not popular with this group, I believe that these topics are still valuable to the module because they are basic features that other teachers could find useful in their own classrooms. These topics should not be removed from the module, especially because they are all advanced skills that are meant for teachers who master the basics quickly. The variety of the options ensures that all teachers will be able to find an Edmodo feature that interests them.

Proposed Revisions and Key Points: Embedded Audio File Included Adjustment to the implementation guide regarding set up of Edmodo classroom and preparation for training. Adjustment to the implementation guide regarding student accounts. Add Library as step 12 in the advanced skills section of the module. Add pre-assessment data to help form suggestions for which advanced skills trainees focus on.
