Application and Technology Wireless Communications Research

Software defined radio platforms are validating the research that will define the next- generation wireless communication standards. Examples include the first 8x8 MIMO LTE advanced PHY prototype achieving 1 Gbit/s using carrier aggregation, and a full end- to-end HD Video link. Leading researchers around the world are developing prototypes using the LabVIEW integrated heterogeneous multiprocessor design flow and the NI FlexRIO Software Defined Radio Bundle to validate their research over a real- world channel.

Example Research Applications

Physical layer prototyping algorithm development MIMO communications and direction finding Relaying and interference alignment research Record and playback of RF signals Spectrum monitoring Standards- based research including LTE-A and 802.11ac

Flexible Hardware Architecture

The NI FlexRIO Software Defined Radio Bundle includes the NI 579x RF adapter module and the NI PXI- 7966R FPGA module for NI FlexRIO. The NI 5791 incorporates a full- duplex direct conversion transmit- and- receive chain covering 200 MHz to 4.4 GHz with up to 100 MHz of real- time bandwidth. The NI 5792 (RX only) and the NI 5793 (TX only) cover 200 MHz to 4.4 GHz with up to 200 MHz of real- time bandwidth. LO input and output ports on all 579x modules allow convenient phase- aligned operation among devices. The NI PXIe- 7695R reconfigurable LabVIEW FPGA target for NI FlexRIO incorporates a large Virtex-5 FPGA with DSP48 coprocessing for high- rate, low- latency applications. PXI Express provides a PCI Express x4 connection back to the system controller allowing up to 800 MB/s of streaming data transfer, and a dedicated peer-to- peer communication bus enables low- latency operation between devices bypassing the system controller. Occupying only a single PXI Express slot, more than eight NI FlexRIO software defined radios can to fit into a single PXI Express chassis for high- density, high- channel- count applications.

Unified Software Design Flow

The unified software design flow and tight hardware/software integration provided by LabVIEW simplify wireless system development, so you can prototype faster to shorten your time to results. Algorithms designed in LabVIEW for streaming execution with NI USRP (Universal Software Radio Peripheral) can be adapted for use with the NI FlexRIO Software Defined Radio Bundle and easily be ported to the LabVIEW Real- Time Module for deterministic execution on a more deterministic OS. When further optimization is necessary to meet advanced timing requirements, designers use the LabVIEW FPGA Module to move time- critical parts of the algorithm into the FPGA using a common graphical language. The LabVIEW DSP Design Module for LabVIEW FPGA and LabVIEW FPGA IP Builder aid in the prototyping process, providing a higher level of abstraction and ways to optimize implementations to meet throughput requirements. Throughout the design flow, your existing IP can be reused in the model of computation that best describes your algorithms.

Multiprocessor Development Options HostA standard desktop, laptop, or PXI Expressbased computer running Windows and the LabVIEW development environment. Real- TimeA LabVIEW Real- Time deployment target consisting of a PXI Express- based computer booted into the LabVIEW Real- Time OS. FPGAA LabVIEW FPGA deployment target consisting of a large reconfigurable FPGA processor that communicates over the PXI Express backplane to a real- time or host controller.

Integrating IP in LabVIEW
You can choose from a wide variety of RF and communications IP blocks for physical layer communications. These blocks consist of functions and reference designs for host, real- time, and FPGA implementations. Graphical Programming Based on LabVIEWWith integrated analysis functions for a wide range of signal processing and communications functions from filters to fast Fourier transform (FFT) and channel models, you can get started quickly whether youre working on host, real- time, or FPGA implementations. .m File Script SyntaxThe LabVIEW MathScript RT Module helps you efficiently execute . m file syntax in a LabVIEW diagram in Windows and LabVIEW Real- Time OSs, combining both graphical and textual models of computation. With LabVIEW MathScript RT, you can design and implement communications algorithms using the popular . m file script syntax. CImport custom C files wrapped as DLL files in LabVIEW using the Shared Library Node. VI calls are automatically created by supplying the .dll and .h header file to the import wizard. Utilities are also provided for compiling custom C blocks to the LabVIEW Real- Time OS. VHDLThe IP Integration Node helps you add existing VHDL. This node also automatically creates a simulation model for the IP, so you can simulate the FPGA diagram on the development computer. Once you have configured the node, you can use it just like any other LabVIEW node with inputs and outputs. Xilinx CORE Generator IPYou can now drag and drop configurable Xilinx CORE Generator IP blocks directly from the LabVIEW FPGA palette onto the block diagram. This streamlines integrating existing communications, math, and even image or video processing IP using the same IP Integration Node introduced in the LabVIEW 2010 FPGA Module.

Complete SDR System Configurations

A typical complete software defined radio (SDR) prototyping system includes a PXI Express chassis loaded with a PXI Express controller and one or several NI 597x RF adapter modules each connected to NI PXIe- 7966R modules for NI FlexRIO. The controller is typically connected to the development machine, a standard Windows- based computer, using an Ethernet cable. Once you have installed LabVIEW, the LabVIEW FPGA and LabVIEW Real- Time modules, and associated drivers, you can use the controller to run the LabVIEW design environment, compile FPGA code, and deploy applications.
