Why Drinking is Popular


In Teenagers:
Media influence, stress, peer pressure, family influences, to feel mature, rebellion, curiosity

In Adults:
Stress, relaxation, addiction from childhood*, curiosity

*In 78% of the cases, adult drinkers are because of they became addicted from before the age of 18.

Types of Drinkers
Alcohol Abuser - Someone who has episodes of going too far with drinking; it can be frequent (binge drinking) or just occasionally; not dependent on alcohol. Alcohol Dependent - High level of alcohol use; dependent on alcohol, showing psychological and physical dependence (inability to control or set limits). Social Drinker - Drinks occasionally, and when they do, no negative consequences follow.

What to Suspect When Pulled Over


1. The police officer will ask for your license and registration of your car 2. They will administer a (some) field sobriety test(s): a. Ask you the date, month and year b. Your name and address c. Count backwards from 10 d. Count fingers e. Hold out arm and touch your finger to your nose f. Balance on one foot at a time g. Walk a white street line h. Recite the alphabet 3. If failed, you will be issued a BAC test

Blood Alcohol Content


BAC - blood alcohol content; influences include: speed of consumption body weight (lower=greater effect) gender age

Police officers issue BAC testing by checking: breath urine blood If failed (over legal limit), you will be put under arrest

Short Term Effects of Alcohol*


Hangover - the delayed effects following a session of drinking too much alcohol headaches body pain (from falling, getting in fights, etc.) nausea dry mouth

Intoxication - a state of being poisoned** Delirium - a state of mental confusion with hallucinations and continual movement *See slide #10 for specific BAC effects **Lungs excrete some toxic ethanol into the bloodstream as an exhaled gas

Long Term Effects of Alcohol


Cancers mouth throat lung liver pancreas Cirrhosis - liver disease FAS - Fetal alcohol syndrome, a cluster of birth defects from a drinking mother Other risks include: high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, inability to produce insulin, testicular damage, skin rashes/sores, tuberculosis, depression and other mental illnesses.

Effects of BAC Levels


.01: no symptoms visible (unless of very fragile frame or medicinal mixtures) .02: legally intoxicated**, warming body, slight mood changing, relaxation .05: exaggerated behavior, loss of some muscle control, release of inhibitions (buzzed) .08: legally intoxicated; definite impairment of motor skills, slurred speech/thinking .10: confusion, pale or red face, barely able to walk, nauseous and vomiting .20: unpredictable emotions (commonly anger and frustration (violence is normal) .40: unconscious, breathing/heart beat dramatically slow down, should be hospitalized .50: deep coma, death is more than 75% likely .60+: death is more than 90% likely

Solutions and Precautions


Alcohol Anonymous - (AA) a treatment organization that consists of alcoholics who share experiences to help each other resist the urge to not return to alcoholism Al Anon - support group that helps family members of alcoholics Alateen - a program that helps teenagers who have an alcoholic family member If someone offers you a drink, say Thank you, but Im not really thirsty I cant, itll interfere with my meds Im still hungover from last night Sorry, but my dads a cop, hes on duty I forgot my designated driver Thanks, but I am pacing myself
