Farm Food Fork
Farm Food Fork is a food-focused gathering for hun-
dreds of West Kootenay stakeholders farmers, produ-
cers, retailers, chefs, consumers, advocates, food groups,
policy makers, butchers and beekeepers. Te West Koote-
nay Permaculture Co-op is undertaking a four-part pro-
ject focused on strengthening and supporting the local
food movement.
We are currently examining food issues specifc to
our region and creating events: FESTIVAL + FORUM
+ FEAST, in Nelson April 5 and 6, to celebrate and de-
velop our regions local foodshed. Based on the needs and
opportunities identifed now, our programming will en-
courage growth of our communitys food economies in
future. To contribute your valued ideas and challenges
you can participate through our web surveys. Participants
will receive a $5 discount towards festival tickets.
Slocan residents can attend the Slocan Food Hub Day
on February 23, a creative and delicious afernoon of local

VOLUNTEER POSITIONS
Te Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) is
seeking a responsible individual from within the Regional
District to sit on the Board of Variance. Applicants must
reside or own property within one of the eleven electoral
areas of the RDCK.
Te purpose of the Board of Variance is to rule on applica-
tions for minor variances to the Regional District of Cen-
tral Kootenay Land Use Bylaws. Please refer any enquiries

A Talk On Food Security
Te Kaslo Food Security project started in 2006 spurred
on by the increased local interest in securing access to
healthy, local food. We ofered several workshops, de-
veloped a food charter and in 2009, opened the doors to
one of the frst rural community food centres in Canada.
As we became more involved in food issues, we began
presenting in communities across Canada at a variety of
conferences. Tis increased curiosity from other com-
munities interested in pursuing the work of food secur-
ity. In 2011, we chose to embark on the largest project we
have undertaken to date; writing and publishing a Guide
Book outlining all that we have learned, researched and
experienced.
Groundswell: A Guide to Building Food Security for
Rural Communities was published by North Kootenay
Lake Community Services Society in December 2013.
Come and hear Aimee Watson, author of the guide
book, share the importance of food security work, a few
fun stories about the joy it brings and the immense hope
it can restore to our small towns. Tis free event will take
place on Tuesday, February 18, 7pm at the Kaslo & Dis-
trict Public Library, 413 4th Street.

What Is Inuenza (Flu)?
Inuenza (u) is a viral infection. People
often use the term u to describe any kind
of mild illness, such as a cold or a stomach
virus that has symptoms like the u. But the
real u is different. Flu symptoms are usual-
ly worse than a cold and last longer. The u
usually does not cause vomiting or diarrhea
in adults. Most u outbreaks happen in late
fall and winter.
What causes the u?
The u is caused by inuenza viruses A
and B. There are different strains of the u
virus every year.
What are the symptoms?
The u causes a fever, body aches, a head-
ache, a dry cough, and a sore or dry throat.
You will probably feel tired and less hungry
than usual. The symptoms usually are the
worst for the rst 3 or 4 days. But it can take
1 to 2 weeks to get completely better. It
usually takes 1 to 4 days to get symptoms of
the u after you have been around someone
who has the virus. If you are not sure if you
have the u, then you can call the health
line at 811 and talk to a nurse.
While sick, limit contact with others as
much as possible to keep from infecting
them. Cover your nose and mouth with a
tissue when you cough and sneeze. Throw
the tissue in the trash after you use it and
then wash your hands. Sneeze and cough
into your sleeve rather than your hand.
Wash your hands often with soap and water.
If soap and water are not available, use and
alcohol-based hand rub.
If you are sick with u-like illness, the Cen-
tre for Disease Control recommends that you
stay home for at least 24 hours after your
fever is gone. (Your fever should be gone
without use of fever-reducing medication.)
If you do need to get medical attention or
other necessities, wear a disposable mask to
protect others.
How is it treated?
Most people can treat u symptoms at
home. Home treatment includes resting,
drinking plenty of uids, and taking med-
icine to lower your fever. Most people get
better without problems. But sometimes the
u can lead to a bacterial infection, such
as an ear infection, a sinus infection, or
bronchitis. In rare cases, the u may cause a
more serious problem, such as pneumonia.
Who is at risk?
Certain people are at higher risk of
problems from the u. They include young
children aged 6 months to 5 years, women
who will be pregnant during the u season,
older adults, and people with long-term
illnesses or with impaired immune systems
that make it hard to ght infection.
Can the u be prevented?
You can help prevent the u by getting the
u vaccine every year. While there are many
different u viruses, a u vaccine protects
against the three viruses that research
suggests will be most common.
Its best to get the vaccine as soon as
its available (usually November). You can
get the vaccine as a shot or in a spray that
you breathe in through your nose. Call the

out where they are now available.
If you live in a home where someone lives
who is in one of the groups at greater risk,
then consider getting a u shot.
Other things you can do:
Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
Wash your hands often.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose and
mouth. Germs spread this way.
Routinely clean and disinfect surfaces and
objects (doorknobs, TV remotes, computer
keyboards and mice, telephones, as well
as tables and cook surfaces) that may be
contaminated with germs like the u.

medicine) scientic studies suggest echina-
cea, zinc and vitamin C as most effective;
ginseng and garlic as questionably effective.

Why Make Massage Therapy A Part
Of Your Health Care?
Massage therapy has many benets. It
provides relief for a number of common
conditions that many of us endure in our
lives as well as making us feel good and
providing relaxation. Some of the most
common conditions that people come to
see me for are tendonitis, carpal tunnel
syndrome, sciatica and frozen shoulder.
An example of treatment for tendonitis
would include frictions to release adhesions
and break up scar tissue allowing for realign-
ment of the bres of the tendons. This allows
for increased blood ow to the area bringing
with it fresh oxygen and taking away
waste products such as lactic acid which is
a product of activity that builds up in your
muscles and causes discomfort. Following
this, an appropriate stretch and hydrotherapy
program would be given and education on
aggravating conditions to avoid.
Massage therapy is an effective tool for
promoting a more balanced physical and
mental state of well being. You will also
be provided with self care techniques like
stretching and strengthening exercises as
well as education on maintaining a healthy
posture and how to use diaphragmatic
breathing to help reinforce the therapy
being given.
It is important to include massage therapy
in your health regime. BCs Medical Services
Plan provides some support for the costs of
massage therapy for those on low incomes.
