Spring 2014 | Mechanical Engineering | IIT Gandhinagar Automotive Engines HW 1: Introduction Total marks: Due Date: 20-01-2014 (before

class time) Please note: I. II. III. IV. IIT Gandhinagar Honor Code applies. You are free to discuss solutions with other students. However, you alone are responsible for your submission. Wherever appropriate (and necessary), cite proper references. Your answer should be brief and elegant For this assignment, submission will be electronic. Please follow these guidelines very carefully a. Your submission will be through email, and the subject line should be (exactly, nothing more nothing less) ME402 HW 01 Submission without the quotes. I am setting an automatic filter in my inbox to route these emails to a separate folder. If your email subject line is different from what is mentioned here (it is case sensitive), I am not responsible for grading your homework. b. The email can only contain files of 3 types, *.pdf, *.m, or *.xls(x). You must submit all Matlab programs, and any excel files used for data recording/ plotting etc. All figures should be part of the report in pdf, and cannot be left in excel file alone. In other words, the pdf file should be a homework submission report complete in itself, while the other files are for reference only. If you show any results in your pdf document, we must be able to re-generate those same results with the help of your program. c. Bundle all your files for this assignment into ONE zip file, which should be named as follows: suppose my roll no is 123456, then my zip file would be 123456_Atul_Bhargav_HW01.zip. Your email should only contain 1 zip file attachment. d. Copy your submission to the TAs for the course (Vinay Dwivedi vinay_dwivedi@iitgn.ac.in and Pratik Shirbhate pratik.shirbhate@iitgn.ac.in).

1. (10 marks) Mystery shopping: Pose as a buyer of a motorcycle/ scooterette in a showroom, and describe your shopping experience. Write particularly about the knowledge of the salesperson regarding the vehicles engine. Attach scanned copies of any brochures/ rate lists provided to you during your shopping spree. Your report should not exceed 1 A4 page (1 side). Do not go to the showroom with more than 3 people per group total. Please mention the names of the people who went with you in your report. 2. (10 marks) Internet shopping: From among those petrol vehicles with a price tag between 1 and 10 lakh rupees (Rs. 1,00,000 10,00, 000), choose any 10 models such that at least 5 different manufacturers are included. First, tabulate the following information:

Parameter Cost1 Units Maruti Alto Fiat Punto LRs. X.XX

Displ # of volume cyl cc 796 3

RPM Max @ Power Max Power kW rpm XX XX

Max Torque N-m XX

RPM @ Max Torque rpm XX

Road mileage2 km/l XX.X

GVW3 kg XXX

Now, using these 10 models, can you locate each of the 10 models on the following plots? a. Cost vs. displacement volume b. Max Torque vs. displacement volume & Max Power vs. displacement volume on the same graph c. Max Torque vs. Max Power d. RPM @ Max Torque vs. RPM @ Max Power e. Power-to-weight ratio (as a histogram) 3. (4 marks) The two-stroke cycle has twice as many power strokes per crank revolution as the four-stroke cycle. However, two-stroke cycle engine power outputs per unit displaced volume are less than twice the power output of an equivalent four-stroke cycle engine at the same engine speed. Suggest reasons why this potential advantage of the two-stroke cycle is offset in practice. 4. (4 marks) Suggest reasons why multicylinder engines prove more attractive than singlecylinder engines once the total engine displaced volume exceeds a few hundred cubic centimeters. 5. (4 marks) Explain why the brake mean effective pressure of a naturally aspirated diesel engine is lower than that of a naturally aspirated spark-ignition engine. Explain why the bmep is lower at the maximum rated power for a given engine than the bmep at the maximum torque.

6. (6 marks) A diesel engine is operating with a mean piston speed of 8m/s. Calculate the air flow if the volumetric efficiency is 0.92. If (F/A) is 0.05 what is the fuel flow rate, and the mass of fuel injected per cylinder per cycle? 7. (6 marks) You are designing a four-stroke diesel engine to provide a brake power of 300 kW naturally aspirated at its maximum rated speed. Based on typical values for brake mean effective pressure and maximum mean piston speed, estimate the required engine displacement, and the bore and stroke for sensible cylinder geometry and number of engine cylinders. What is the maximum rated engine speed (rev/min) for your design? What would be the brake torque (N.m) and the fuel flow rate (g/h) at this maximum speed? Assume a maximum mean piston speed of 12m/s is typical of good engine designs.

All costs should be ex-showroom, also called base price. This EXCLUDES excise duty, registration, road tax etc. 2 Road mileage as shown in the brochure, and certified by the government. This is not the mileage that the salesperson or website might claim 3 Gross vehicle weight (you may also try to figure out the engine weight)
