2013 LENTEN SERIES continues at Central Presbyterian Church March 3,10,17, 24 5:15 6:00 pm Supper 6:00 7:15 pm Classes 7:15 7:30 pm Worship Childcare for children under 4 years provided Surprised by Hope by N. T. Wright Discussion led by Rev. Scott Paul-Bonham & Rev. Lant Davis at Central Presbyterian Church Wright convincingly argues that what we believe about life after death directly affects what we believe about life before death. For if God intends to renew the whole creation and it this has already begun in Jesuss resurrection the church cannot stop at saving souls but must anticipate the eventual renewal by working for Gods kingdom in the wider world, bringing healing and hope in the present life. THE WAY: WALKING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF JESUS By Adam Hamilton Hamilton uses historical information, archaeological data, and stories of the faith to follow the footsteps of Jesus from his baptism to the temptations to the heart of his ministry, including the people he loved, the parables he taught, the enemies he made, and the healing he brought. The 7th Cents Youth Group (6 thru 12 grades) will meet at CUMC Children Kindergarten through 5th grade will meet at Central for Gods Great Surprises Childcare provided for preschool and younger children at CPC

From that time Jesus began to proclaim, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near. (Matthew 4:17 NRSV) The Gospels according to Matthew, Mark, and Luke all agree that proclaiming the nearness of Gods realm was part of Jesus basic message. He might say it, as in the quotation above, in order to urge repentance. On at least one occasion he said it just after he had performed a healing miracle. I sometimes wonder whether we agree with Jesus: is the kingdom of God really near? We may pray the prayer that Jesus taught us, saying, Your kingdom, Lord, let it come, but in our minds we may be thinking that it is way off somewhereup in heaven. If that is true, however, then why did Jesus say it was near? Perhaps it was because whenever he is present the kingdom is present, too. Of course, that begs the question, if he is still present with us (as the Church historically has believed) then isnt the kingdom present, as well? Or maybe it was simpler than that: maybe the kingdom of God has always been near. I began thinking along these lines because of the video series we are watching together as a part of our Sunday night Lenten programming. In the videos Surprised by Hope (and in his book by the same name) noted biblical scholar and theologian N. T. Wright argues that heaven is not up or way out there, but rather is everywhere present on this earthin another dimension but still tangent to all earthly places at once. Thus, after Jesus resurrection, when he ascended to heaven, Wright would say that Jesus simply passed into that other dimension yet still is fully present with us. According to Revelation 21, when the great day of the Lord occurs, heaven will come down to earth. I wonder whether this will not be a sort of the same thing in reversethe coming into our dimensions of the heavenly city, which in some sense has been with us all along. Those who think of the kingdom of heaven in this way often speak of the thinness of space separating us from the heavenly realm. In high spiritual moments we may even have the feeling that we are beginning to see through the thinness from our dimensions into the heavenly. Of course, its all a mystery; and I certainly dont have the answers. Yet Lent is a season of the church year when we attempt to slow down and focus on God and on Gods will for our lives. We meditate on the sacrificial love of God we see manifest in the life of Jesus the Messiah, and spiritually we seek to be close to him. When Lenten sadness is over and we have experienced the grief of Good Friday, we will come at last to a joyous Easter celebration of Jesus resurrection and the promise of our eternal life with him. In sadness, grief, and joy, it helps me to think of the kingdom of God being just as near to us as Jesus taught. I pray that we all have some thin moments this month, when the veil between heaven and earth, between Jesus and us, between the present and the future, is gossamer indeed.

Seventh Cents Youth Group February Highlights: 7th Cents youth had an exciting February. We kicked off the month with our annual Souper Bowl of Caring skit and lunch. Combined, the youth raised almost $1000 in donations and canned goods! Thank you for supporting the youth ministry in their fight to "tackle" hunger in Terre Haute. President's Day led to a wonderful opportunity to hold a lock-in. There was not much sleep but a good time was had by all! We also kicked off our new Lenten Series on February 24th. We are using a video series led by Adam Hamilton. Each video takes us to the actual locations of Jesus ministry! We are looking forward to digging deeper into the life and ministry of Jesus throughout the rest of the Lenten season.

March Events: This month we will continue our Lenten Series using Adam Hamilton's "The Way". This month we make our way to Capernaum, the Sea of Galilee, a Samaritan community, and Jerusalem. Our discussions and activities follow the life and death of Christ as we prepare for Easter. I hope all 6th12th graders and their friends will be able to join us for this exciting video study! Supper is being served at both Centenary and Central, but this month our study will be held at Central. If you have any questions or comments please feel free to call, text, or email Amanda Tramel 706-3588100 amanda@thcpc.org
