Answers to questions: 1. A. The current is the same everywhere in the circuit. B. Each component has an individual Ohm's law Voltage Drop. C. Kirchoff's Voltage Law Applies. D. The total resistance in the circuit is equal to the sum of the individual resistances. E. The sum of the power supplied by the source is equal to the sum of the power dissipated in the components. 2. A. The current in each component (branch) is the same everywhere in the circuit. B. Each branch has an individual current path. C. Kirchoff's Current Law Applies. D. The total resistance in the circuit is equal to inverse the sum of the inverse of the individual resistances. E. The sum of the power supplied by the source is equal to the sum of the power dissipated in the components. 3. A. Adding a resistor in series decreases the total current and the total power. B. Adding a resistor in parallel increases the total current and the total power. 4. A. Carbon Resistors - Is the most common type of Composition Resistors. Carbon resistors are a cheap general purpose resistor used in electrical and electronic circuits. Their resistive element is manufactured from a mixture of finely ground carbon dust or graphite (similar to pencil lead) and a non-conducting ceramic (clay) powder to bind it all together. The Carbon Composite Resistor is a low to medium type power resistor which has a low inductance making them ideal for high frequency applications but they can also suffer from noise and stability when hot. B. Film Resistors - Consist of Metal Film, Carbon Film and Metal Oxide Film resistor types, which are generally made by depositing pure metals, such as nickel, or an oxide film, such as tin-oxide, onto an insulating ceramic rod or substrate. Film Resistors have much better temperature stability than their carbon equivalents, lower noise and are generally better for high frequency or radio frequency applications.

C. Wirewound Type Resistors - Made by winding a thin metal alloy wire (Nichrome) or similar wire onto an insulating ceramic former in the form of a spiral helix similar to the film resistor above. Is Ideal for use in measuring circuits and Whetstone bridge type applications. 5. If all the lights were connected in series, if one bulb is burned out, the circuit is open and the whole house is dark, until that lamp is repaced and the circuit is complete or has continuity again. 6. Given: V = 6v I = 300 mA = 0.3 A Find: R V = IR R = V/I R = 20 Ohms 7. Total Resistance = 3 + 3.5 + 1.5 = 8 ohms I = 9/3 = 3 A Total Volts = 3 x 8 = 24 v EMF of battery = 24 v 8. Total Resistance = 6 + 8 + 1 = 15 ohms I = 0.5 A V = IR V = 0.5 x 15 = 7.5 v

9. Series 1: 4.5 + 1.5 = 6 Parallel 1: 1/40 + 1/10 = 0.125 Series 2: 4 + 0.125 = 4.125 Parallel 2: 1/6 + 1/4.125 = 0.409 Series 3: 5 + 0.409 = 5.409 Parallel 3: 1/5.409 + 1/14 = 0.241 Series 4: 25 + 5 = 30 Parallel 4: 1/30 + 1/0.241 = 4.182 Total Resistance: 1 + 2 + 4.182 = 7.182 ohms
