mechanic. He found out that it takes four years of apprenticeship and part-time study to
become a technician. The company will pay for his studies and he will receive the
following salary on condition that he passes his examinations each year:

a) Give the percentage increase between consecutive years, correct to 1 decimal place.
b) If he can expect a 20% increase in year 5, what will his monthly salary be after he has
qualified?
c) What will his annual salary be for each of the 4 years?
d) If you take into account that the studies cost the company R12 000 annually from the
first year, work out Jack’s total benefit in year 1.
e) Determine the total benefit Jack receives in year 2, 3 and 4 if study costs increase by
6% p.a.
