Chanakya Neeti : Chapter 1

Chanakya Neeti (The book) has seventeen chapters in it. This is Chapter 1. I have tried my best to translate the verses in a very accurate manner. Yet, there might be a e! glitches. "ave a look over the ollo!ing#
Chanakya Neeti says not to : Give any advice to a foolish person Try taking care of a woman with loose character Keep company of a sad fellow As all of them are totally useless. The house with any one of the following is not well-suited for living: An ill-tempered wife with low morals A wicked and deceitful friend A talkative servant with impoliteness in him her A venomous snake A person must save money for the !ad days and must protect his woman even at the cost of money that was saved. Chanakya says that money is one of the most significant assets a man must have. "t !rings you the honor# supports and makes you capa!le to deal with calamities. There is no point to live in a country region where:

$ou cannot find an employment Are not respected %ave no friends and well wishers Cannot find an education

& "t will !e !etter to 'uit such place. (o not live even for a single day in the places where you cannot find the following five: )rosperous !usinessmen A *rahmin well versed +oldiers ,iver (octor A man must not live in a place that has:

No fear of law )eople having no shame No clever men No +pirit of charity No Art

Test the wife at time when your wealth is lost# a friend when in need# relatives at the time of crises and servant on some important mission.

-hoever helps you at the time of illness# misfortune# famines and invasion is your true brother in real scenes. A person who cannot decide his goal# simply cannot win. Chanakya Neeti : Chapter 2 *elow are the Ideas of Chanakya included in the second chapter of his famous writing .Chanakya Neeti/. The original verses are in +anskrit and to spread the message " have attempted this translation to e0tract the !asic ideas included in them. *y working hard you get: Good food to eat Capa!ility to digest it A !eautiful wife and happiness with her -ealth that can !e utili1ed for the good causes As per Chanakya Neeti# the person e0periences heavenly 2oy:

-hose son is o!edient -hose wife is faithful -ho is satisfied with his possessions

A true son is o!edient to his father and a true father takes care of his son. The 'uality of a true friend is that he she must !e honest. Acharya Chanakya suggests that a person must stay away from the people who talk flattery in front of you# !ut try to harm at your !ack. +uch friendship is like a vial of poison with milk on its top. +imply stay away from such persons3 A friend who is not good shall not !e trusted# nor trust a friend who has not proven !ad. They may reveal your secrets to others when not in good terms with you. Chanakya neeti also advises you not to act foolish under peer pressure. (on4t speak anything a!out your plans as others will try to hinder your regime. The simplest suggestion is that you continue with the task without gra!!ing much attention. +tupidity is woe and the days of youth are very woeful. Anyhow# living on the mercy of others is woe e0treme. 5very hill does not contain gems. 5very elephant does not possess mani .Gajamukta/. 5very place is not a home of some no!le person. 5very forest does not have sandalwood. 6 The moral is that a must act as per demand of the situation instead of continuing over assumptions. Also# don4t trust everyone. A wise person grooms his child carefully !ecause only an educated person with high morale is given true respect in society. 6 Throughout Chanakya Neeti you will see that Kautilya has emphasi1ed a lot over practical education.

The parents who do not care for the education of their children are their worst enemies. 7n growing up such children feel isolated from the society# 2ust like a crane in a flock of swans. Chanakya advises not to overindulge with your child# pupil and students. "t will spoil them. (o not allow a single day of your life to pass away without learning something good useful. The following are on self-destruction mode: A tree on the !ank of a river A woman in house of a stranger A king with stupid !ad counselors. The power: 7f a scholar lies in his knowledge 7f a king lies in his army 7f a trader lies in his money 7f a servant is in his service. 6 Chanakya neeti tells you to understand your role and act accordingly. As people leave a weak king# a prostitute desert improvised customers# and !irds leave a withered tree. "n the same manner the guests must leave the house of host after having food. 7ne who !efriends a person of !ad character or lives in the company of an evil fellow8 undergoes a 'uick destruction. The friendship !etween people of e'ual status is considered to !e the !est# serving under a king is one of the !est employment a person can get# trading is the !est occupation# and "t is !est for a lady to stay in the comforts of home.

A wise man educates his sons# marries daughter to a high class family# e0ploits weaknesses of his enemies and does friendship with people who do good deeds. "f you have an evil person on one side an a snake at the other8 !etter opt for the snake as it will !ite only for self defense !ut the wicked person will not spare any chance of hurting you. A wise king always accompanies wise councils who always stand !y his side irrespective of the situation and place. 7n doom4s day .pralay/ the whole land is su!merged !y sea# !ut the men with no!le characters have a depth that many seas together can4t fill. That stand still in every good or !ad situation. A stupid person looks similar in appearance like any other human !eing in spite of !eing an ass.

As per chanakya neeti & A young person# with a handsome face and of a higher family8 if remains uneducated are always ignored like a scentless flower. The !eauty of the cuckoo !ird lies in its tone# that of a lady lies in her loyal affection# of an ugly in his education and for a sage it4s kindness. 50pel an individual to save a family# a family to maintain a village# a village for good of the country. .Not as !ait# !ut for good/ A hard working person cannot remain poor# a person who always keeps God in his mind is unlikely to do sin# a person with peace cannot 'uarrel. +imilarly# a vigilant !eing has no fear. 50cess of !eauty resulted in the kidnapping of +ita# e0treme ego of ,avana got him killed# and unnecessary charity caused great trou!les to ,a2a *ali. Avoid e0tremes3 As nothing is impossi!le for almighty. +imilarly# every place is in reach of a trader# no land is alien for a knowledge-full person and none is stranger to a polite talker. As a tree laden with scented flowers spreads fragrance in the whole forest. A worthy son !rings glory to the whole family# clan and country. As a dried tree when catches fire !urns the whole forest# so is a !ad son !orn in a entire family. 7ne good son is !etter than many trou!lesome sons in a family. The whole family feels comforta!le and safe with him. Chanakya says to use cane over a child only after :. This can continue for ;< more years. 7nce the son achieves his ;=th8 all you can do is to treat him as a friend. This marks the end o the chapter $ o chanakya neeti. "ope you en%oyed reading 3 Chapter 4 of chanakya neeti
"n chapter four chanakya has stated the following points. %ave a look over the following points derived from chanakya neeti &sons# friends# kith and kin are capa!le of distracting you. A wise man4s mind cannot !e diverted as he knows that his holy acts will ultimately !ring !lessing to him and his loved ones. As a mother takes care of every re'uirement of infants8 similarly a saint must deliver spiritual guidance to his followers. knowledge is like holy kamdhenu and is like a tree that !ears fruit in every season. "n unknown territories it provides protecting and fetches rewards for you. "ts !etter to have a worthy son than having hundreds of unworthy ones. >ike millions of stars in the sky have no competition with !rightness of the moon. -hen a dead son is !orn then the person griefs for a few days# !ut an unworthy son is a grief for lifetime. As per chanakay neeti# following are most difficult to !ear:

living in a village with people of !ad character a 'uarrelsome wife a stupid son eating !ad food to work for an evil family a widowed daughter

>ike there is no profit in raising a !arren cow8 a son without knowledge or devotion is also useless. this world is like a hell where a person can get three kinds of reliefs:

a devoted wife a good son company of no!le persons

A king orders ones# a scholar tells ones and daughter are married ones. Therefore one must !e very careful a!out those. ?editation is performed !est when alone# education !y two# singing !y three# traveling with four persons# farming with five and for !attle many are re'uired. A good wife is pious# e0pert at household chores# faithful and never speaks a lie to her hus!and. An important verse of chanakya neeti compares following with poison:

a person whose knowledge is confined to !ooks a meal without appeti1er living life in a community of poor people an old man marring a young woman

A man must leave a religion without love and compassion# must leave a teacher without knowledge. Also its !etter to leave a short tempered wife and relatives with no love and respect for you. A person traveling a lot is likely to get weak old# same will !e the case with a standing tethered horse# a woman lacking love in life and clothes that are fre'uently e0posed to sun. %ow is this situation# who are my real friends# how is my home4s condition# what4s my earnings and e0penditure# what are my talents and weaknesses &. are the 'uestions that a wise man asks himself all the time9 Chanakya Neeti : Chapter 5 %ave a look over the points stated !elow. "f not ama1ed then at-least you4ll !e inspired from the chanakya neeti 'uotes stated !elow: "nfatuation is the !iggest disease and greed is the worst enemy of an individual. Anger is the most damaging fire. Among all possessions knowledge is supreme.

The test for purity of gold is done !y ru!!ing# heating# pounding and cutting. +imilarly# the true characteristic of a person are revealed at the time of intense trou!le. %is manners# voice and actions will reveal a lot a!out him. 5veryone is likely to face trou!les in life and even wise men are also fear from them. Anyhow# the real wise men deal with trou!les wholeheartedly and !oldly upon their arrival. Children !orn from same mother and also under same stars @astrologyA8 may differ in characteristics. The e0ample is a !er tree having sweet fruits as well as painful thorns on it. Administrators are corrupt in some manner @at least desire promotion A. The person who preens is likely to !e romantic. A foolish dude can4t !e a polite talker and a frank person faces difficulties in telling lies. Bools are 2ealous with wise men# poor is with rich. "n the same manner prostitutes are 2ealous of pious ladies. The !est way to sa!otage knowledge is to remain idle. -omen @men as well3A looking for other man will also face destruction. $ou cannot gain a good harvest !y sowing less seeds and upon e0ecution of commander his army !ecomes ineffective. Those persons will !e cursed who make fun of knowledge-full people. -ho disrespect the rituals stated in scriputes# call a serene person to !e a hypocrat and imposter will suffer for sure. Charity puts an end to poverty# knowledge to ignorance. Good !ehavior eliminates most of trou!les and devotion in god marks an end to all fears. Bor a person with a!solute knowledge# heaven is of least significance. A true warrior gives a little importance to his life. Bor a true sage woman is of no use and for a person with control over desire# whole world looses its significance. +kill is like the !est friend in foreign territories. A woman with good nature is truly the !est friend of a man. ?edicine to a sick person and charity in ne0t world. ,ani over ocean# giving help to capa!le# lightening lamp in daylight are nothing !ut the useless acts. ,ain water is purest of all and in same manner -ill-power is the mightiest of all powers. )oor men desire for money. Animals desire power of speech. ?en desire for heaven while angels desire for Nirvana. Truth keeps the earth in its place# truth is responsi!le for wind to !low. Truth makes sun shine and "t4s the primary force for e0istence of everything. ?oney comes and goes# so is the youth. >ife goes and goes the soul# Nothing lasts forever. 7nly thing that stays firm is your faith.

Chanakya Niti: Chapter 10

A man without money is not poor in comparison to a man without knowledge. A person must walk with his eyes open# must drink clean water# speak words with wisdom# and must perform an action only after thinking a!out pros C cons. A crow can eat anything# a poet is capa!le of imagining anything# a woman can do anything# and a drunkard can say anything. Chanakya Neeti: Chapter 11

This article contains the ideas illustrated in the ;;th chapter of Chanakya Neeti. %ave a look & The natural tendencies for charity# !asic logic# politeness# and a!ility to !ear pain cannot !e taught to anyone. 5ither you have them or don4t. A person who leaves his community to 2oin another community is likely to face 'uick destruction. +ame will !e the case with king who don4t cares for his su!2ects. A small goad controls a giant elephant# a small lamp destroys a great deal of darkness# a small hammer can !reak huge mountain. Their si1e is insignificant to the purpose they solve. "f the mind of a person is filled with evil thoughts then any num!er of pilgrimages won4t cut his her sins.

"t is no surprise that a person with incomplete knowledge will try to de!ate and argue the men with true knowledge. This can !e understood from e0ample of a tri!al woman who re2ects precious gems and selects cheap !eads for decoration. The person who does not speaks for a whole year and who only opens his mouth to eat will en2oy heavenly pleasure of a!out ;< million years. .The simple e0planation is that # Gsilence is goldH. ?en who speak too much reveal their secrets to other and face pro!lem./ A real student refrains himself from love# flattery# anger# infatuations# preening# entertainment# and oversleeping. A person who consumes single meal in a day# has control over his mind# performs his religious duties# and who involves with his wife for offspring .not mere pleasure/ is a true I*rahmin4.
