HYDRAULICS

Producer of high pressure hydraulics

With 50 years of experience in hydraulic design and manufacturing, Brdr. Bauer-Nilsen AS produces an extensive range of high-pressure hydraulic equipment for the shipbuilding sector as well as for offshore and land-based industry. Bauer-Nilsen products include high-torque, slow-speed hydraulic motors, high-pressure hydraulic cylinders and hydraulic control valves.

HIGH-TORQUE LOW-SPEED HYDRAULIC MOTORS

The Bauer Hydraulics production programme concist of different standard motors size ranging from 1.8 l/rev to 32.6 l/rev with turning moments up to 138 000 Nm. All motors are radial piston type with heavy roller bearings on shaft end eccentric. Internal friction is very low and starting torque high. Bauer Hydraulics also produces motors with two shaft ends. Two-speed motors are also available. The two-speed/torque arrangement is obtained either by moving the slide spindle axially (HR 12) or by a circulation valve (HR 14) for speed control for the motor. The circulation valve (HR 14) offers a very smooth changing of speed/torque even if the motor is loaded/running. By introducing larger pistons diameters is existing motor designs, applicable for motors subjected to moderate fatigue loads, Bauer Hydraulics now has available motors with a better price on volume ratio. In order to have a higher drainage pressure on large motors, these motors are now made with a strengthened motor casing. These motors are now better suited to be installed on large vessels by connecting the drain lines directly to the hydraulic systems common return line.

HIGH PRESSURE HYDRAULIC CYLINDERS

Double-acting and single-acting cylinders with strokes up to 12000 mm; diameter 25-600 mm and larger telescopic cylinders are delivered to the rules of the different classication societies. A great number of different cylinder designs are available, trunnion or ange mountings and internal mechanical locking.

HYDRAULIC CONTROL VALVES

Bauers design of hydraulic manoeuvring valves combines the effect of a balanced spindle and seated valves, eliminating leakages through pressure ports and maintaining smooth, easy operation. This solution is of special value in constant pressure systems, and the delivery programme includes: control valves for series and constant pressure systems load control valves for cylinders and hydraulic motors with adjustable damping manoeuvring stations with baseplate valve mounting, sub-plates in accordance with ISO standard 4001.

HYDRAULIC WINCHES AND JIGGER WINCHES

For doors, containerlifts, ramps and RO-RO ramps we deliver jigger winches and hydraulic winches with a large range of different sizes and capacities to meet customer requierements.

BAUER MOTOR TYPE HMB

The different motor sizes are built up on a limited number of standard parts. Large roller bearings on the eccenter.

TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION
The Bauer motors are high torque low speed radial piston motors with 5 to 18 cylinders. The motor shaft is equipped with two roller bearings, and the eccenter has a large roller bearing. Mechanical losses in the transmission are small, and the motor has a high starting torque. The oil supply to the cylinders is directed by a hydraulically balanced slide system. The slide therefore runs with very low friction forces even at the highest hydraulic pressure.

Cylindrical roller bearings are standard

Dual load control valve directly mounted on slide valve also available.

BAUER MOTOR TYPE HMJ, HMH AND HMK

Bauer motor type HMK has, except for two cylinder banks, in principle the same design as HMJ and HMH.
Cylindrical roller bearings are standard. 5 to 18 cylinders in the motor casing.

Piston pins connection rods and slide valves are hydrostatically balanced.

Two speed slide valves also available.

DIFFERENT MOTOR VERSIONS AND APPLICATIONS

The motor type HMB is produced in 3 different versions: 1. A heavy duty industrial motor with large cylindrical bearings and a 500 l/min slide valve. The cylindrical roller bearings give longest service life of the different type of bearings that can be mounted in a standard motor. For carrying external radial loads they have the highest fatigue capacity. 2. Also a heavy duty motor with large cylindrical bearings, but with a 300 l/min slide valve for lower speed. 3. For motors on applications where the shaft has to carry large axial loads, taper roller bearings are recommended. Cylindrical roller bearings are standard. The HMB motors can also be equipped with two shaft connections (shaft on both sides).

HYDRAULICS

TWO SPEED MOTORS

On some applications there is a matter of necessity to have two optional running speeds on the hydraulic motor. Bauer Hydraulics motor types HMJ, HMH and HMK can be delivered as two-speed motors. Bauer Hydraulics use two different principles to obtain the two speed/torque function. One by moving the slide valve spindle (HR12) and the other by disconnecting cylinders through a circulation valve (HR14 and HR22). All cylinders are engaged when running at slow speed/ high torque, and some cylinders are disconnected when running with high speed/low torque. Standard speed/torque ratios obtainable are as follows: 6/3, 9/3, 9/6,14/7 and 18/9. When other speed/torque ratios are required, please contact us. The ratio 8/4 is infrequently used. Running a motor on 4 cylinders gives a very uneven torque and angular speed (see diagram page 19.) This might cause uncontrolled vibrations. The circulation valve can also be used for free-wheeling. In this case, cylinders are disconnected, e.g. 7/0, 9/0, 14/0, 18/0

HYDRAULIC OPERATIONS
The two-speed slide valves HR14 and HR22 are hydraulically operated. High speed is optained by applying a pilot pressure. Two alternative pilot pressure settings are available: 20 bar and 60 bar. A 60 bar pilot pressure is however standard. Slow speed is automatically obtained by zero pilot pressure.

MANUAL OPERATION
The slide valve HR12 can also be delivered as manually operated. The manually operated lever has two positions. One position gives high speed/low torque, and other position gives low speed/high torque. The force needed to change position is low, approximately 5 kg.

HMJ and HMH motor with two-speed slide valve HR14

By using the slide valve HR14 we obtain a very smooth changing of speed/torque, even when the motor is loaded and running. By this arrangement the cross-connected cylinders are emptied and drained to tank, hence we avoid overheating the oil.

EFFECT OF PULSATION ON STARTING AND RUNNING TORQUE

The most distinct characteristics given by the above curves are that odd-number cylinders in general have a much smoother pulsation then even-number cylinder. A pulsation of 29,9% as illustrated in curve for four cylinders is regarded to give too high vibrations. Consequently, four cylinders are not recommended. The curves are based on the Bauer HMH motor with cylinder diameter 145 mm and stroke 110 mm. 3 cyl.

SERVICE LIFE OF THE MOTOR

Experience shows that the limiting factor in the lifetime of a hydraulic motor is the bearing life of the roller bearings on the shaft. The estimated bearing life is calculated according to the standard formula issued by the bearing producers.

EXTERNAL LOAD ON THE SHAFT END

Calculation formulas for additional load on shaft and front bearing. The effect of external radial load on the shaft end has to be considered from two points of view: 1. Additional radial load transferred to the front bearing, P2. 2. Additional material stresses produced in the shaft by the bending moment caused by the external load, K.

CALCULATION OF ADDITIONAL RADIAL LOAD ON FRONT BEARING P2 P2 = K (a+e) [N] e

For bearing life calculations this P2 value has to be added to the P1 value in the life time formula.

AXIAL LOAD ON THE SHAFT

On a cylindrical bearing an axial load will not effect the radial load capacity. It is considered as a rule of thumb that a cylindrical bearing rotating at moderate speed can carry an axial load of 5% of the given radial load value. The motor type HMB can be furnished with taper roller bearings for use in applications where the motor shaft has to carry large axial loads. Please contact us for more informations.

INTERNAL PRESSURE LOSSES IN MOTORS AND SLIDE VALVES

The graph below shows the oil pressure required to drive an unloaded motor at various oil deliveries. The oil pressure required to drive a unloaded motor mainly consists of dynamic pressure losses inside the motor. The values given in the graphs below refer to an oil viscosity of approx. 36 cSt. For oils with higher viscosity the pressure losses will only have a moderate increase. Boost pressure When the motor is working as a pump (i.e. overrunning loads) it is important that the motor is supplied with sufficient oil to avoid cavitiation. The necessary feed pressure at the oil inlet can be estimated from the below pressure loss graphs. The minimum inlet pressure should be 1,6 times the pressure taken from the graphs, + the pressure in the motor casing (drain pressure).

Using two inlet and two outlet ports A, A and B, B the pressure difference is reduced approx. 30% on the 500 l/min slide valve. Two outlet- and inlet ports are standard features on 9 cyl. motors.

OIL LEAKAGE
The slide valves on the Bauer motors are of a rigid design giving little distortion even under pressure. The leakage values are therefore relatively small. See below curves indicating the oil leakage in the different slide valves and motors. Drain

T P

NOTE
In a closed hydraulic circut the motor casing leakage has to be compensated by the delivery of the booster pump only. The slide valve leakage remains in the circuit. The motor casing leakage must always be drained.

MOTOR CASING LEAKAGE QR

Leakage to the motor casing from piston, pistons pins, connection rods and and slide valve ends1).

Total leakage QT = QR + QS

SLIDE VALVE LEAKAGE QS

Leakage from the pressure side to return side of the slide valve1).

The speed of the motor has a relatively small inuence on the leakage. The values in the graphs show average values of motor leakages in the normal speed range. The curves refer to an oil viscosity of 36 cSt.

1) In our test procedure the motor casing leakage is

measured when the motor is rotating. The slide valve leakage is measured when the motor is not rotating.

HYDRAULIC MOTORS FOR WINCHES WITHOUT MECHANICAL BRAKES

The pistons connecting rods on the Bauer motors are equipped with retainer rings causing mechanical return of the pistons in case of cavitation, and when the motor is working as a pump. This feature, together with a low leakage rate, makes the motors suitable for load control equipment (e.g. winches) without mechanical brakes. See piping diagram to the right.

g. I

LOAD CONTROL VALVE RECOMMENDATION

When needed, a pilot-pressure operated valve should be used for load control on Bauer motors (see connection diagram g. I). A relief valve used as a load control valve should not be used (indicated on connection diagram g. II). On idle running this arrangement will have maximum relief valve pressure on both sides of the motor (pressure and return side). This will give too high back-pressure in the motor.

g. II

BACK-PRESSURE
In general the back-pressure should be kept as low as possible. The design of some applications results in continous pressure on both inlet- and outlet ports. In such cases, the lowest pressure of the two ports must not exceed 60 bar on HMB and 45 bar on HMJ, HMH and HMK. If higher back-pressure is desired, e.g. when motors are working in series, please contact us. Too high back-pressure will reduce the play in large eccentric roller bearings. This might disturb the function of the bearing. However, the back-pressure must offer a sufficient margin to avoid cavitation. For more information about cavitation, see Boost Pressure on page 22.

OIL PRESSURE IN THE MOTOR CASING (DRAIN PRESSURE).

To reduce excessive wear on the rotating shaft seal, the pressure in the motor casing (drain pressure) should normally be kept as low as possible. For motors working in continuous service, the pressure should not exceed 1 bar. For motors used on anchor winches and capstans on ships, the drain line is usually connected the main return line. This line often has a considerable lenght, which gives a high oil friction when operating at low temperatures. With such an arrangement the drain pressure in the motor casing will also increase. As the operation intervals and rotation speed for these applications are limited, a drain pressure up to 10 bar can be accepted. In this case a suitable shaft seal must be mounted (see page 26). As a blow-out protection of the motor casing against peak (shock) pressure, the motor is provided with a pressure relief valve located in one of the drain outlets. The relief valve pressure is set to 20 bar for HMB and 15 bar for HMJ, HMH and HMK. It is always advisable to mount a check valve (non-return valve) in the drain outlet in order to protect the motor casing from possible pressure shocks in the main drain line.

OIL CIRCULATION THROUGH MOTOR CASING

For motors working continuously at high pressure or relatively high speed, the oil temperature in the casing may get too high. In this case circulation of some of the return oil through connection points with 3/4 BSP threads is recommended. It is important that the circulation outlet is connected to the highest of these connection points. To obtain a circulation pressure differential (of approx. 0,5 bar) in an open hydraulic circuit, a slight restriction or a spring loaded valve may be installed in the return line of the motor. In closed circuit systems the return oil from the booster pump can be used for casing circulation. Because of the low internal leakage rate of the Bauer motors, we recommend oil circulation on motors working with a continuous effect larger than 11 kW (15 hk).

HYDRAULIC FLUIDS MINERAL OILS

A good quality mineral-based oil which preferably incorporates antiwear and anti-foaming additives, oxidation and corrosion protection should be used.

FIRE-RESISTANCE FLUIDS
Synthetic uids (e.g. phosphate ester) and water based uids (water emulsions and water glycols) only to be used after consulting the manufacturer. All hydraulic uid must be within the viscosity limits given below.

VISCOSITY
In an open hydraulic circuit, the lubrication requirements of the hydraulic pumps are usually the deciding factor for the minimum viscosity of the hydraulic uid. For the Bauer motors it has become a normal practice to accept the same viscosity limitations as required for the pumps. As a guidance note we will recommend the following viscosity values: 1. For motors in intermittent service: - motors for manoeuvring of ship hatches, viscosity not lower than 12 cSt. - motors for excavators, winches and normal equipment, viscocity not lower than 16 cSt. 2. For motors in continuos service: - viscosity not lower than 23 cSt.

FILTRATION
Due to the design, the Bauer motors are in general less sensitve to impurities and pollution than the hydraulic system in which they operate. Hence the ltration requirements are usually limited by the other components within the hydraulic system. However, lters of 25 micron or less are recommended.

SHAFT SEALS AND CORROSION PROTECTION ON MOTOR SHAFTS

The drawing below indicate three different shaft seal design. Special seal arrangements are available e.g. on motors working under water, and for phosphate- and water based uids. Please contact us for futher information when special seal arrangement is required.

PART DESCRIPTION

Single acting hydraulic seal. This seal has a large sealing area, and the sensitivity to impurities and corrosion is therefore small. The generation of friction heat is larger than on lip seals, and based on experience we have found the following limits on the shaft speed: Up to 50 rev/min for 90 mm shaft, 45 rev/min for 100 mm shaft and 35 rev/min for 125 mm shaft. The seals can be used for maximum drain pressure.

Stripping ring for protection against dust, particles and water. Bauer use as standard a heavy duty metal caged stripping ring.

Rotary seal for high shaft speed. This seal has no limitation on shaft speed. The drain pressure should normally not exceed 10 bar.

Speedi sleeve for protection against corrosion is standard on all motors. The Speedi sleeve is a chromiumplated stainless steel sleeve, an it is pressed on the shaft and fastened with a two component epoxy plastic compound. It is also used for repair work on worn and corroded shafts to make a new sealing surface.

Standard design. Key N in motor identication.

Design for high speed. Key M in motor identication.

Special design on request Key X in motor identication. Arrangement as shown is often used when a motor is mounted on a gear box.
