How much does a Wedding and portrait photographer earn?

Many people get into photography for two reasons: they love it and they think it's easy money. They think "I can do a family portrait in a morning and earn 100 or $200." That's more than a lot of day jobs pay in the whole day - cool eh?! Sadly this is a misguided belief as it doesn't tell the whole story. I have created three yearly schedules to prove my point. This is the first schedule and it maps out an entire year of activity for a low end / amateur photographer. My second schedule maps out the year for a more regular photographer and my final one shows the schedule for a business savvy photographer. All the schedules assume the following: - You get two days off a week, although not necessarily at the weekend. - You get 25 days holiday a year. - You get off all the normal bank holidays and religeous festivals. - You are lucky enough to create a completely full schedule all year round. At the bottom of each yearly schedule I list the costs and finally the total net profit. By the way, the average salary in the US is around $44,000 and the average in the UK is around 24,000, so you can double the pound note figures I use if you want to get a rough dollar perspective.

the low end photographer

The amateur or low end photographer looks at 100 or $200 for a portrait session and thinks it's fantastic - easy money. They never fully understand the true cost of their time, or the costs involved in running the business and finding clients. This photographer is not likely to offer beautiful frames or albums. Since they have to photograph a lot of sessions to earn enough money to live they never have enough time to provide each client with a great service. Their photography and creativity is compromised because they have to rush clients through like they're on a production line. It's frightening how many clients this photographer needs to scratch out any kind of living. This system is bad for the photographer, their art and for their clients. They're treated as a commodity and end up resenting the fact that they're not respected for their craft. Have a look at how little this photographer makes after the costs have been factored in. Scary huh! I used to charge these small amounts, yet still had people complain about my prices. In other words, you'll always have people complaining about the price no matter how low they are. So, don't worry about the complaints; most people don't value what you and I do. However, some people do (or will, given the right emotional prompting from you) and they're the people you need to find.

the smart photographer

You'll notice that this photographer puts more time into their marketing (most weeks it's a full day). You'll also notice that they meet every portrait client for a pre-portrait consultation before they're even hired. All portraits are presented to the client in person during a portrait projection session. Meeting clients before and after the photography is crucial if you want them to invest in decent sized wall portraits. Never put family portraits online for your clients to choose. The orders you get will be tiny compared with projecting your images in person. Notice how few photography sessions this photographer has. They're doing fewer sessions but making far more money from each session. This is because of the extra time they've invested in building a stronger relationship with the client and offering a better service. It's also down to investing more of their time in their marketing to ensure they're finding the right clients in the first place. The figures shown here can get considerably higher as you perfect your selling, marketing, pricing and merchandising skills. I know of many photographers who regularly make between $5,000 - $10,000+ from a single family portrait session. Now you're in the high-end pricing bracket you can afford to bring on staff to take over some of the tasks for you. This frees you up even more to focus on improving your marketing, selling and business systems. Don't overlook giving an internship. I'm often approached by young aspiring photographers who offer to help me in return for knowledge rather than money.
