The ratio of the mass of water in the mixture to the total mass of the mixture is thus equal to:
|MC X ( A b / m b) + m g X ( m c / l O 0 ) l / [ M + m o + m g X (mc/lO0)l
This ratio is also equal to the ratio of the mass of water in the aliquot of the mixture to the mass of the aliquot: C x (As/ms). The following equation results from setting the last two expressions equal and rearranging:
mc, % = {(MC/mg) X [ A s / m s - A b / m b l + ( m o C / m g ) X (As/ms) } X 100/[1 - C(As/ms)] Quantity Units tzg o f H 2 O, or ml of Karl Fischer reagent Same as A b tzg of H 2 O/indicated ~g of H 2 O, or/~g of H 2 0 / m l o f Karl Fischer reagent used g g rig g

Equation I is the desired equation, including the mass of extraneous substance if present, with quantities expressed on a mass basis. As indicated in the earlier papers (1,2), mo could be estimated by heating m a g of the solvent-extracted water mixture until a "dry" residue of mr g remained. The mass of extraneous substance, m o, in the total mass of mixture, rex, could then be calculated as m o = m x (mr/ma).
