Week 3

VCS Video conferencing is integration of audio video and peripherals. It is governed by ITU (International Telecommunication Union) to set standards for it. H.320-ISDN H.323-IP H.235-Security H.350-directory based protocol

H.320
It is used for communication on ISDN. Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) is a set of
communication standards for simultaneous digital transmission of voice, video, data, and other network services over the traditional circuits of the public switched telephone network. There are 2 Basic Interfaces.

1. BRI: Basic Rate Interface. Consists of 2B and 1D channel. D channels are used for signalling purposes. B channels are of 64k each. So total of 128k of BW. Network Termination Device is needed. For more BW channels can be merged. 2. PRI: Prime Rate Interface. Consists of 23B and 1D channel. D channels are used for signalling purposes. B channels are of 64k each. So total of 1472k of BW. Network Termination Device is not required. For more BW channels can be merged. ISDN lines are dedicated. Gives Guaranteed level of quality. Cost and installation complexity is high

H.323
It is used for communication based on IP. Packets are sent. Packets consist of a header and footer along with payload. Therefore an approx. of 20% overhead exists. So we need 20% extra bandwidth Call Setup: H.225-Connection setup. It initiates calls, gives alerts and connects calls on accepting. Port no 1720 is used. H.245-Negotiates which AV protocols are supported.

IP lines are not dedicated. So Cost is lesser Provides Better QOS Lower Quality in larger network.

SLA Requirements: Jitter: <30msec Delay:<80msec Error Rate:<0.1% Bandwidth: 20% extra.

Lost Packet Recovery (LPR)

LPR works by temporarily allocating a portion of the call bandwidth into a data channel used for sending FEC data to the receive system. Through an iterative process, LPR increases and decreases the size of the FEC data channel until it finds the minimum bandwidth that must be allocated to the FEC data channel to allow the receive system to recover all lost packets

Polycom Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation (DBA)

Polycoms Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation (DBA) capability is used in conjunction with LPR. DBA is an algorithm that automatically and dynamically adjusts the video bit rate during a video call in order to eliminate / avoid packet loss

Polycom Video Error Concealment (PVEC)

For calls when both participating systems do not support LPR, Polycoms Video Error Concealment (PVEC) is used. PVEC is an algorithm for IP video quality of service that compensates for the effects of packet loss by using packet information from neighbouring macro blocks, prior frames, and future frames to estimate the content of the current video frame. Unlike LPR which recovers lost packets and DBA which avoids packet loss, PVEC works to mask the impact of packet loss.
