Title: Fourier Analysis Intro: In this practical, we deal only with periodic signals.

Well use Fourier Analysis to investigate these signals. Any periodic function f(t), with period T = 2 / can be represented as a Fourier series: .f(t) = a ! n=" ( an cos(nt) ! bn sin(nt) e#n(") $he sine and cosine functions are har%onic functions and the series (") contains a possibly infinite set of har%onic functions with discrete fre#uencies. $he fre#uency " = is &nown as the funda%ental fre#uency and n , n'", are the har%onics. $he coefficients an and bn %easure the a%ount of cos(nt) and sin(nt) present in the function f(t). $he result of Fourier analysing a signal is a set of values for these coefficients for all n. Method: A Fourier analysis progra%%e %ust perfor% the integrations, for any function f(t) of interest. (i%psons rule will be used for this. Exercises 1.1 $his progra%%e was written and co%piled. (sheet alpha) $he function f(t) = t) was evaluated fro% *ero to ten and the progra%%e returned a value of +++.+++++ which agrees with the analytical solution. Exercises 1.2 $he nu%erical solution corresponded to the analytical solution for both .f(t) = sin(t) where =) , $ .f(t) = e-p(t) fro% t= to " using " steps. $he latter solution was )) )../)01+ and the analytical solution was )) )../.230 which indicates that the nu%erical solution was . +20 away fro% the e-act answer after the integral was bro&en into " steps according to (i%psons rule. When the nu%ber of steps was increased, the accuracy i%proved. Exercises 1.3: $he progra%%e was %odified to calculate the Fourier coefficients a& and b& and a table of results was printed out. Exercises 1.4: .f(t) = sin t 4 the progra%%e for this is e-e"a5sin.c.
