Step In Time
On the morning of Monday January 27th, I went along to Cromer Library to watch, listen and learn from both Fiona Davies and Tony Rogers all about the local fishermens Step Dancing. I recall, many years ago now, watching, both Fiona and her late dad Richard step dancing in the pub in Cromer next to the railway station, called Buddies. It was, despite the number of pints enjoyed, a brilliant evening and left me feeling very impressed by their dancing.
A S WILLS
Danum House, Overstrand, Norfolk
Numerous photographs were on display, supplied by Cromer Museum, of the dancing in local pubs and in Suffolk as well as several short films of step dancers, it looks easier than it is. After an informative talk by Fiona, who has been doing the steps since she was a child, there were dance routines from both Fiona and Chris Gills, who knew all the routines / steps, as both of them are regular dancers. After some time, while the Library was preparing itself for the afternoon, everyone was encouraged to have a go under the helpful guidance of Fiona and Chris.

Dear Editor,
A big thank you to everyone who attended the River Mun community day on Saturday 25th January. We had a fantastic turnout with 170 people attending to learn more about the river and participate in our activities. We also had a great response to our River Guardian volunteering scheme and we are now busy organising the next stage of the project; getting you involved with conserving & improving the Mun. Best wishes, Jonathan Lewis Norfolk Rivers Trust www.norfolkriverstrust.org
and Blakeney. This wasnt what residents asked for when they were calling for help from government after the floods in December. The people living on the coast of Norfolk need to see the damaged flood defences reinstated & improved. I fear that by not reinstating defences other towns and villages will be at risk too. Yours Sincerely, Denise Burke
Dear Editor,
It seems staggering that Januarys cabinet meeting at the NNDC has been cancelled due to a lack of business . Individuals in the Tory administration have said privately that much of the key decision making at the council goes on in these meetings, so Im surprised they have found nothing to talk about at such an important time. Whats worse is that the administration explained on Twitter the decision was made in the middle of December seemingly days after the floods hit the coastal areas of our district. What sort of message does this send out
Dear Editor,
I am writing to you regarding the proposed cuts to the Environment Agency - the people who deal with protecting North Norfolk and other coasts from flooding. Earlier this month I criticised the governments proposals which would see 1,500 jobs go from the organisation. Now we know that because of budget cuts the Environment Agency is considering sacrificing parts of the coast to the sea. Cost cutting measures would allow the sea to come further in-land in Cley, Salthouse,

Well they really did look as though they had picked it up pretty well. Even though I knew I was in for a treat, I had no idea just how much I would enjoy the couple of hours I was there. This is the first time I had ever been to any of the many events held in the Cromer Library and it will definitely not be the last. Readers are encouraged to look at our listings on the Special Events pages as all of our local Libraries have many interesting events during the next two months. Thank you to Fiona Davies and everyone else involved with this event. It was great. PK STOP PRESS: Fiona does all her dancing in her late fathers size 10 boots

The Competition:
The first entry drawn will win a pair of tickets to the performance. To enter please answer this simple question: Thank You For The Music stars an authentic live tribute to Abba and which other millionselling super group? These lovely and welcoming ladies offered up a selection of different, mouth watering soup to passing shoppers on the day. Three different and tasty soups were being offered up to passing trade by the ladies from the Cromer RNLI. After getting the thumbs up from all the punters enjoying their soup, this event will, hopefully, be repeated again in the near future. The ladies were all on hand to serve up the soup to the passing trade and raise money for the Cromer lifeboat.

On Thursday 23rd January, I attended this Public Meeting Heating Or Eating Should Energy Companies Be Renationalised? Having published details in the Crab Tales issue (028) advertising this meeting, which was held at the Community Hall in North Walsham, I decided to go along and find out what was all going on. I am very glad I did attend the meeting, run by Ed Baber of the North Norfolk Trade Council with (From left) Joe Rust from the Labour Party, Alicia Hull Green Party and Mary Littlefield , as Vice Chair of the Norfolk Peoples Assembly. Both the Tories and the Lib Dems were invited, but neither attended, which surely does little to defend their approach to this problem. Each of the three invited guests spoke concisely on the concept of Re-Nationalising all the energy companies that we have supplying their services to us. This was followed by questions from the public who numbered around 30 people, and all the speakers gave clear answers to the problems raised by those in the audience. What came out of the meeting was that the vast majority were against the privatisation of these service companies and how supportive they were of re-nationalising everything we call good companies. These now private companies are leading the present government down the garden path to achieve vast profits and also vast salaries for all their directors. At the expense of their users, you and I. With little more than offering their directors both their salaries and bonuses the idea of nationalising these businesses certainly holds great appeal to everybody I know and those attending the meeting. After a little more than an hour the speakers were all able to answer all the questions raised during the debate, before this interesting meeting closed. Is it possible to nationalise these businesses again the answer must surely be a definite YES. Philip Keddell

Cromer Trophies & Engraving Ltd have been established since 1994, and have steadily grown since then, moving to their current premises in 2001. Company Director Steven Burbidge takes up the story. When we moved to our current premises in 2001, the space seemed enormous it felt like we had all the room wed ever need. However, this all started to change as early as 2002. This was when we purchased our first computerised engraving machine. Suddenly we had the capability to engrave almost anything, in any font, and also to do logos, images and more. This was a massive step forward for us previously all our engraving had been done with a manual machine where all the engraving (wording only) was set up with lines of individual brass letters, all loaded one at a time. Fast forward to mid-2013 and we had four computerised machines, all pretty much in
daily use, and customers coming to us not just locally, but from across the UK for our engraving service, especially our engraved ceremonial spades (more about those another time!) What we didnt have however was the space to use the machines as efficiently as wed have liked so when the shop next door became avail -able during the summer, we immediately took on the lease and so the process began of combining the two shops into one. This proved more complicated than planned, but the builders did a great job putting in the opening between the two premises, and it was worth the effort. Now the carpenter has finished building all the amazing new counters, we can really see the layout of the new shop coming together. Hopefully by the end of February we should have all the final little details completed & be fully up & running.
Why not visit the new shop in Cromers West Street and see for yourself what this successful local business can do for you, whether you just need a new front door key cut, your favourite shoes repaired, or perhaps you too would like an engraved ceremonial spade?
The doctor looks back at him and says: "Well the guy in the next bed wants to buy your slippers!"

This picture was taken taken and donated by Photographer Chris Gill of Cromer when the Wilko Johnson Band appeared on the Pier, courtesy Scott Butler. The picture wasnt posed for but was an actual action-shot during one of their songs.
What a trooper! his playing, as always, was impeccable - he perhaps didnt strut round with quite the staccato jerkiness during the solos that he would have in his prime but please bear in mind hed already been dead for two or three months, come this double gig, so please grant him that. He did, nonetheless, move to almost the full extent of the stage acreage during his guitar breaks - for which he received a rousing cheer each time from the thousands in the mesmerised audience - but also machine gunned the crowd more than adequately with his trusty, stuttering 1974 Fender Telecaster. The one difference I DID note, compared to his past performances - he smiled...he smiled a lot! He was so obviously overwhelmed by the welcome and response he received. I have been most fortunate in experiencing numerous privileges, along the way, so far
- many in the company of good muso friends, named & unnamed - but the Sunday afternoon, 26th January, 2014 (13.00 hrs & 16.00 hrs), rates pretty damn close to the top of the list. Over the course of the weekend my festival companion Dave and I watched numerous top-rated artistes and bands who played faultlessly - maybe TOO faultlessly at times, to the expense of spontaneity & personality but the Wilko Johnson Band was a breath of pure, fresh, oxygen-rich North Sea air. Who said Canvey Island air? Lest we forget the other two band members, let me heap justifiable praise on drummer Dylan and bassist Norman who matched-up to their leaders talents. Top form, Guys. A throw-away remark by the aforementioned Dave - at the close of the show Norman Watt-Roy may not be the best bass player in the World but he does rate amongst the top ONE, Permit me, if you will, to turn the clock or calendar back to when Wilko was enjoying better health and I wrote this review for the Crab Line, following his appearance with John Otway and the Hamsters in their Mad, Bad and Dangerous tour, at the Norwich Waterfront. ...But now - the man of the moment who I had been eagerly waiting to see again since his July Arts Centre gig, viz. Wilko Johnson, who many may remember from his Dr Feelgood days. Baldness has now succeeded his thick, pudding-basin coiffure of the 70s. His act is still fresh; still elementary raw feral rock/blues; still basic chord progression stinging guitar breaks; still stabbing staccato driving chords and licks that wont allow you to stay still for a second. A man of few words, he counts the next number in across the outro of the previous one and he still lurches menacingly with wide-staring, psycho-eyes across the stage as he snaps out the solos and riffs from his sweat-smeared red and black Tele, with its rusting fittings. From time-to-time he machine guns the appreciative punters from the hip with his self-same electric axe via a Fender Twin Reverb amp yet, I feel sure, with neither
effects nor processors? Quote -Like an amphetamined, malfunctioning Dalek. To support a front man like Wilko you need the strongest foundation backing and, yep, its there in the form of Monti his power-house drummer (at that time) & the truly amazing, body-contorting, long- fingered Norman WattRoy on bass - both, also, ex Ian Drury Blockhead members who complement this 3-piece as tight as extraneous limbs affixed to Mr Johnsons body. Surely theyve gotta be cerebrally midid-up via a common time signature? As I remember his self-penned set included Barbed Wire Blues; Shes Good Like That; Sneaking Suspicion; Back In The Night; She Does It Right; Dr Dupree; etc, etc. I headed this original piece: A view of the local music scene by Mikkki Rokk. Heavy on adjectives, light on good taste. What changes?
Anyone inspired by this squit to see The Wilko Johnson Band - very sadly it may be your last opportunity - they are due to play the Waterfront again on 1st March - as early as 14.00 Im led to believe. Micky P, Trimingham-upon-Sea.

Derek & Liz, who live in Trimingham, enjoy running this happy and friendly cafe with the help of Liz daughter Ros and a great team of
staff, which includes Elaine (on left) who puts a smile on the customers faces with her sandwiches. Likewise, Lisa is very capable and helpful, keeping everyone happy. The cafe thanks everyone who has to date, used the place and would suggest that if you have not been there, it is indeed time you popped in. During the weekends, they are helped to run the place, by Danny, and at last someone from the village, Natalie, who always makes the customers very welcome here. With the weather as it is, Liz and Derek are really looking forward to better weather in the not too distant future. As Derek put: We enjoy running the place, and meeting such friendly customers and having such a great team to help us. PK.

Powers of Attorney
by Anna Lloyd Chartered Legal Executives with Hayes + Storr Q: A Power of Attorney What is it? A: A power of attorney is a document whereby I (the donor) appoint you (the attorney) as my agent to deal with matters (usually financial) on my behalf. The document has to follow a preset format & can take one of several forms, depending on the type of power of attorney required. Q: What is an Ordinary Power of Attorney? A: An Ordinary Power of Attorney is effective from the moment it is signed and witnessed. The attorney can deal with financial matters only, and only so far as authorised by the donor. Once the donor ceases to have mental capacity so as to be able to decision make, the Ordinary Power of Attorney fails. Q What is an Enduring Power of Attorney? A: As it became clear that, with an increasingly ageing population, the need for a power of attorney which carried on into mental incapacity was needed, the Enduring Power of Attorney (EPA) was created, by statute. However, since Oct. 2007 it is no longer possible to enter into an EPA, but those created before that date are still valid. EPAs work in stages, whilst the donor retains capacity, he decision makes & the attorney carries out the action. Once the donors capacity fails so that he can no longer understand to make decisions, the attorney is obliged to register the EPA with the Office of the Public Guardian. Notice of the proposed registration must be given to the donor and a minimum of three relatives, as detailed by statute. During the registration process, which can take at least 6 weeks, the attorneys powers are limited. Once the EPA has been registered, the attorney can decision make, but taking into account what he knows his donor would be likely to do in the given situation, and then carry out the transaction. Q: What is a Lasting Power of Attorney? A: Since October 2007, the replacement for the EPA has been the Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA). It is a more long winded & bureaucratic document than its predecessor, the intention being to try and prevent fraud. Inevitably it is also more expensive. The LPA cannot be used until it has been signed by both the donor & attorney and then registered with the Office of the Public Guardian. LPAs can be granted either in connection with financial matters or personal welfare matters. There is a registration fee of 110 per LPA, although this can be waived/exempted sometimes. Finance & personal welfare cannot be combined into one LPA document so that if the donor wishes to appoint an attorney in connection with both aspects, then two separate LPAs have to be entered into, and this incurs two registration fees.
The registration process then takes at least six weeks assuming the Office of the Public Guardian accepts the documents. The financial LPA can then be used by the attorney, if required, even if the donor still has capacity but the personal welfare LPA cannot be used by the attorney until the donor is incapable of making the relevant decision. Q: If there is a Power of Attorney in place, who owns the assets? A: What is frequently misunderstood is that whatever the type of power of attorney the assets always remain those of the donor, even if he has lost capacity and the attorney is decision making. Q: Can an attorney make a Will on the donors behalf? A: No, the attorney cannot make a Will for a donor, should they be unable to do so for themselves. If a Will is needed or has to be updated, it has to be made by the Court. Q: Can an Attorney make a gift on the donors behalf? A: The power of gifting is limited to relatively minor charitable gifts & to friends & family only for seasonal presents. Trying to make larger gifts or tax plan is not possible and any attempts to do so can be set aside. Such things can only be done with a Court order. The fact that any donee might be an eventual beneficiary under any Will is irrelevant whilst the donor is still alive. Q: What happens if an individual loses mental capacity and there is no EPA or LPA in place? A: If there is no EPA or LPA in place, and an individual loses mental capacity, then in order for someone to handle finances or personal welfare decisions on their behalf, an application has to be made to the Court of Protection. Look out for information on The Court of Protection which will be covered in a future article.

Skye 2012
Henry Blogg, former RNLI coxswain of Cromer lifeboat with his dog Monte.
I can properly visualise as a finished print, and which excites me. Then the work begins. My photographs are a true expression of my feelings and thoughts at the time, so I guess they are as much about me as they are of my subjects. These images were all captured in 2012, but the process only ended in September 2013. If I can turn out 20 good prints in a year, then I am doing well .... Photography is Ivans main profession and the Landscapes are Ivans personal work. Most of his time is spent shooting food, drink, and restaurants around the UK. Ivan works and resides between Cromer & London. After graduating from Ealing School of Art and Photography, Ivan started out as a fashion photographer, working for most of the top hair salons in London & receiving credits in Vogue magazine. Other major clients include Dunlop & Beechams. After a break away from photography, Ivan has returned to his initial art form as a professional food photographer, with a studio in London and with clients far and wide. The NNDC seeks to offer opportunities to local artists to display their work in the well-lit firstfloor gallery area in its Holt Road offices in Cromer, and in turn provides staff and visitors to the building the opportunity to see a variety of different artists work. Currently six exhibitions are held annually; open for view to the public during normal office hours: Monday, Tuesday & Thursday 8.30am 5pm; Wednesday 10am 5pm; Friday 8.30am 4.30pm. For information on Arts in North Norfolk visit: www.northnorfolk.org/arts You can also follow us on Twitter@NorthNorfolkDC
The exhibition offers an ideal way for families and young children to learn about the work of RNLI volunteers during WW1 and will feature a play area for younger children.
North Norfolk District Councils public art gallery is presenting an inspiring collection of landscape images by local artist and professional photographer Ivan Daly. The exhibition will provide high quality framed prints from 85 to 125 Skye is an ancient temple of stone, water, and cloud. I go there often but never know what Ill photograph until I come across something that
