I
t the early days of U.S. his-
tory, many battles were
fought on now-famous
hills—battles that were often
decisive, or at least very impor-
tant in their respective wars.
There was the Battle of Bunker
Standing for that which is right often is
not popular and takes much courage,
but there are issues that are vital and
far more important than the color of the
church carpet!
Hill in Boston during the Amer-
ican Revolutionary War, the
Battle of Cemetery Hill at Get-
tysburg during the War Between
the States, and the Battle of San
Juan Hill during the Spanish-
American War. There were also
several well-known wars on

hills, mountains, and ridges
during World War II.
The Battle of Hamburger Hill
was one of the most famous and
controversial conflicts during
the Vietnam War. It may very
well have been where the saying,
“That’s not a hill worth dying
on,” came from. Is winning
the battle worth the loss that
will be incurred? In the case of
Hamburger Hill, many military
leaders doubted whether it was
worth the 70 dead and over 400
injured soldiers that resulted!
I’ve often heard leaders use
that phrase to indicate that the
issue being addressed is not
worth the collateral damage it
may cause—especially to them,
should they take a strong stand
and express their opinion! But
a true leader knows that there
are hills worth fighting for, and
even dying for—literally, as well
as organizationally. Standing for
that which is right often is not
popular and takes much cour-
age, but there are issues that are
vital and far more important
than the color of the church car-
pet! Too many have been willing
to die on some hill like that, but
don’t even recognize a hill that
we must defend.
The Battle Is Raging
One of these battles concerns
whether God created this world
in six literal days, as taught in
the Genesis, or whether some
form of Darwinian evolution
is scientific fact. This is truly a

minor point, but a pivotal issue.
It is such a major cornerstone,
that should this one “stone” be
removed, the whole structure of
biblical truth will collapse.
In my opinion, it is vital that
we not only hold to this truth,
but that we also diligently pass it
on to our children, doing all we
can to protect our schools and
institutions of higher learning
from compromising with a god-
less educational system.

of God, and not on a Darwinian
theory upon which even scien-
tists cannot agree.

 I believe strongly in our
schools, since I am a prod-
uct of Christian education. I
thank God that I’ve had the
opportunity to graduate from
a Christian university, taught
as an adjunct professor of that
institution, and served for seven
years on the board of trustees of
another Christian university. I
have always encouraged young
people to get all the education
they could, while hanging onto
the common sense and good
judgment God has given them.
I am not anti-education, but true
education will never contradict
the Word of God.
The Biblical Account of
Creation
The Bible begins with the
Genesis account of the six days
of creation. When examined,
any variance from this account
will clearly crumble. We either
accept this by faith or we don’t,
and I believe there is plenty of
Biblical evidence on which we
can base an intelligent faith,
since the Bible is very clear on
this subject.
“What did Moses know about
Creation?” some have asked
me. Moses wrote the Genesis
account, which I believe was
revealed to him by God. The
Lord also gave him the Ten
Commandments—the only part
of Scripture written by God’s

own finger! And right at the
heart of the Ten Command-
ments, the fourth one states,
“Remember the Sabbath day to
keep it holy.” Exodus 20:8. Then
God continues writing (with His
own finger), “For in six days the
Lord made heaven and earth,
the sea and all that in them is
and rested on the seventh day.”
Exodus 20:11.
Throughout the Old Testa-
ment we find the statement
again and again that God cre-
ated the earth, and in the New
Testament we find that the
active member of the Godhead
in Creation was Jesus Christ,
which gave Him the right to
be our Savior. John begins his
gospel this way: “In the begin-
ning was the Word, and the
Word was with God, and the
Word was God. He was in the
beginning with God. All things
were made through Him, and
without Him nothing was made
that was made.” John 1:1–3.
John tells us that Jesus is the
Word, that He has no begin-
ning, that He is God, and that
He is the Creator.
In 1 Corinthians 10:3–4 the
Bible says, “All ate the same
spiritual food, and all drank the
same spiritual drink. For they
drank of that spiritual Rock that
followed them, and that Rock
was Christ.” Can you imagine?
It was the Bread of Life—Jesus—
that fed the children of Israel the
manna that came to them six
days a week, with a double por-
tion on the sixth day so that they
could remember on the Sabbath
that God was their Creator and
Provider!
There are numerous expres-
sions in the New Testament,
which point to Jesus Christ as
the Creator God. Here are just
a few:
“God who created all things
through Jesus Christ.” Ephesians
3:9.
“For by Him all things were
created that are in heaven and
that are on earth, visible and
invisible, whether thrones or
dominions or principalities or
powers. All things were created
through Him and for Him.”
Colossians 1:16.
In the great book of Hebrews,
Paul writes, “God, who at vari-
ous times and in various ways
spoke in time past to the fathers
by the prophets, has in these last
days spoken to us by His Son,
whom He has appointed heir of
all things, through whom also
He made the worlds.” Hebrews
1:1–2.
You see, to refuse to believe in
the Genesis account of Creation
means taking away the divinity
of Christ and His ability to save
all that accept Him! Do you see
why this is a “hill worth dying
on”?
It Takes Courage
During World War II a fierce
battle was fought on Hacksaw
Ridge, on the Island of Okinawa,
Japan. The American troops had
been forced to retreat, leaving
a lot of wounded men on that
hill. All were afraid to go back
there, but one was willing—a
medic who refused to carry a
gun. His name was Desmond
T. Doss, and he went back up
that hill repeatedly until he had
rescued 75 wounded soldiers
and brought them back to safety.
Amazingly, he did all this while
wounded, himself!
We can make a difference
when we have courage and God
is with us. Support God’s leaders
who have the courage to publicly
stand for what is right—men
who have taken strong stands
in support of Creation, like Jan
Paulson, president of the Gen-
eral Conference of Seventh-day
Adventists, and Angel Rodri-
guez, director of the Biblical
Research Institute. If there are
institutions in your area that are
allowing evolution to be taught
as fact and truth, then raise your
voice in a strong, loving manner
for that to cease.
And yes, there is one more
hill I’m thinking of—the hill
called Calvary! That’s where
Jesus Christ gave His all for you
and me on a “hill worth dying
on.”

he fact that we’re still
living in this evil world
indicates that we’ve not
yet completed the grand task of
preaching the gospel to every
nation, kindred, tongue, and
people. The world’s leaders are
incapable of solving its prob-
lems, because the real solution is
Jesus Christ! Jesus promised an
end to all our problems—every
pain, disease, suffering, and
all corruption. Even death will
come to an end. There’s no better
way than God’s way!
In Prison—But Free

are pretty similar to many people

Barbara was also “sprinkled”
as a baby, but she was raised
in the Catholic Church. She
still in grade school, she once
thought about becoming a nun,
but changed her mind when she
began attending public high
school.
Barbara’s first marriage was to
a Lutheran man who converted
to Catholicism so they could be
married in her church. “In my
mid-20s to early 30s I started
to fall away from the church
because I felt many things

Something missing
About three years ago, Jim and
Barbara realized something was
missing. “We both felt that we
wanted to get back to church,”
Jim says. “Our religious back-
grounds were so different, but
we did have a common goal. We
wanted to find a church that held
to the teachings of the Bible.”
“So we started checking out
different churches,” Barbara
adds. “I started reading my Bible
and was beginning to wonder
about some things, including
the Sabbath.”
Early in 2007 Jim tuned his
radio to WWJP-LP, 101.7 FM—a
3ABN Radio affiliate—while
trying to find some Christian
programming to listen to during

his workday. Although he wasn’t
able to listen to whole programs,
he did catch “bits and pieces” of
them, and what he heard made
sense. He listened for about six
months before he mentioned it
to Barbara.
One Saturday morning Jim
happened to drive by the Rice
Lake Seventh-day Adventist
Church again. Remembering
what his childhood friend had
said so long ago, he noticed that
everyone looked pretty normal.
“I was impressed to stop, but
I felt I wasn’t dressed right, so
I didn’t go in,” he says. But it
started him sharing with Bar-
bara the things he’d heard on
the radio, including what he was
hearing about the Sabbath.
“Jim told me he wanted to
visit the Adventist church, but I
was skeptical and didn’t want to
go unless he checked it out first,”
Barbara admits. “I didn’t know
if they were going to be Holy
Rollers or something!”
In November of 2007, Jim
did go alone the first Sabbath
and enjoyed the worship service,
so Barbara went with him the
following week. They received a
very warm welcome from every-
one and felt right at home. After
being introduced to Len Fast,
WWJP’s operating manager, Jim
was excited.
“Can we turn up the power
so it reaches farther?” he asked.
“Everyone needs to hear this
message!”
“Oh, I wish, and I agree!” Len
replied.
“L e n wel c ome d u s and
showed us around the radio
station. He played a tremen-
dous role in helping us along,”
Jim says.
Barbara agrees, “We’re grate-
ful for a small church with
people who will reach out to
newcomers. Len even gave us
our first Bible studies!”
As they continued attend-
ing their new church, Jim and
Barbara made many fast friends.
“As Jim and Barbara contin-
ued to visit our church, they
discovered that the Bible was the
textbook and Jesus was the cen-
tral theme,” Len recalls. “Soon
they decided they wanted to be
baptized, just like Jesus was, so
that their sins would be washed
away and forever be gone.”
It was a very special day
when Jim and Barbara were
baptized in Sandow Lake at

Camp Wakonda, during the
Wisconsin Camp Meeting in
June of this year. Their children,
though, have been wary of their
parents’ new religious beliefs.
“They were really watching us
at first, but they’re a little more
accepting now,” says Barbara.
“Eric had the strongest reaction,
and didn’t want us to take his
9-year-old son to church with us.
But last summer Trenton wanted
to go with us to South Dakota on
vacation. I told his father that
we’d be going to church while we
were away, and he said it would
be okay. Trenton very much
enjoyed Sabbath School as well
as the children’s story during the
worship service. He loves to read
his children’s Bible, too!”

I know you’ ll
love this tasty, healthy
dish! My fa mily can’t
get enough!
Vegetarian Rice and Chicken
• 3 C brown rice
• 2 cloves garlic, crushed
• 1½ tsp salt
• 1½ Tbsp oil
• 5¼ C water
Chicken in sauce:
• 2 pkgs MorningStar Meal Starters, Chik’n Strips,
cut in 2-inch strips (or use 3 C homemade gluten strips)
• 2 Tbsp oil
• 1 med onion, chopped
• 3 cloves garlic, crushed
• 1 med carrot, shredded
• 2/3 C green olives
• 1/3 C capers
• 1 C roasted peppers, chopped
• ½ tsp dried sage
• 2 Tbsp nutritional yeast flakes
• ½ C fresh cilantro, chopped
• ½ C fresh parsley, chopped
• 2 Tbsp tomato paste softened in a little water
Preparation:
In a large skillet, cook rice in the oil until golden brown. Add

I A good morning breakfast is composed
f you’re taking a long trip,
when do you put gas in the
car? Before you start off, or
after you get there?
Here’s a picture of a fam-
ily that misses out on a good
breakfast: the irritable, inatten-
tive, and fretful youngster; the
apathetic and uncooperative
teenager; the exhausted, nag-
ging housewife; and the tired
and harassed husband. Does this
sound familiar?
If so, I have good news.
Morning breakfast can be such
a happy family time, that it’s
worth tucking in a little earlier
at night to start the day together.
And you won’t believe the differ-
ence it will make in all of you!
A good morning breakfast is
composed of unrefined foods,
and equals 1/3 to 1/2 of your
food intake for the day. Studies

have shown the benefits to be
numerous: an increased sense of
well-being, better work perfor-
mance, less work accidents, less
desire to overeat later in the day,
a decreased desire to eat between
meals, better weight control, and
best of all—a better disposition!

What then? Let me share two
very important breakfast secrets
with you:
Secret #1
An exhausted empty tummy
never feels like a kingly break-
fast. Your stomach needs to
sleep all night! Unless your
last meal has been completely
digested before you go to bed,
your stomach, small intestine,
large intestine, liver, gallblad-
der, and pancreas have to work
all night, and (with the excep-
tion of the bowels) these organs
need rest as much as your mus-
cles, eyes, and brain! The lighter
the meal in the evening, the
better—and plan to eat several
hours before going to bed. You
will be rewarded by a health-
ier digestive system—healthy
enough to feel like eating break-
fast in the morning!
Secret #2
Isn’t it refreshing to wash your
face, brush your teeth, or take a
shower in the morning? Your

he Sabbath was introduced
to a handful of Millerites
before their movement’s
crisis in 1844. It was discussed
within their circles, and written
about in their publications.
Still, most of the Millerites
rejected the Sabbath. We can
understand why this group,
already facing rising opposi-
tion, would not want to embrace
another message that would
drive them further from main-
stream Christianity. For cen-
turies the Sabbath had been a
stumbling stone for many who
considered it, and in the 1800s
the stigma of Sabbath-keeping
remained very much alive.
But some Millerites (later,
Adventists) did adopt the Sab-
bath, and in time their beliefs
became the defining face of
Adventism. This is their story.

Passing of the Torch
Rachel Oakes and her daugh-
ter Delight were friends of the
Farnsworth family, and may
have lived in their farmhouse for
a time. One can easily imagine
Rachel sharing the Sabbath with
them, as she had with her pas-
tor. Historians’ details vary, but
most agree that sometime in
the spring or summer of 1844
the oldest Farnsworth boy, Wil-
liam, stood in their Washington
Christian Connection church
and declared himself a Sabbath-
keeper, as did his brother Cyrus.
Not everyone in their church
was happy with this turn of
Sabbath began meeting at the
Farnsworth home—the first Sab-
bath-keeping Adventist meet-
inghouse in North America.
In February 1845, Preble
wrote about the Sabbath in a
Millerite paper. In March, he
republished the article as a tract,
plainly titled, Tract, Showing
That the Seventh Day Should Be
Observed as the Sabbath, Instead
of the First Day; “According to the
Commandment.”*
Preble returned to Sunday-
keeping within a few years, but
his tract made an impact. It
convinced 15-year-old Marian

esteemed Seventh-day Adventist
evangelist; Andrews University
in Berrien Springs, Michigan,
was named in his honor.)

imagine, you say—but nothing
is impossible with God!

is ratcheting up the work beyond

On a recent trip to Africa
to shoot new episodes for the
program, Jim spoke with five
people in Ethiopia who prayed
for a lady that died.
“I talked to every person and
got the same answer on cam-
era,” he says. “The testimony of
every witness was that the lady
was indeed dead, but after they
prayed for her, God raised her
up to life!”

lives had been transformed, and
they had become such model
prisoners that officials gave them
40 days to go home and visit
their family.
“We tracked them down, and
we were the first people from the
Adventist Church they’d ever
met,” Jim says. “Amazingly, they
were all keeping the Sabbath and
had daily Bible studies as well.
We were told that when the men
came home to visit, they brought

amounts. Hindus come from
miles around to see who this
Creator God is, and when they
come, God works miracles.
He heals the sick, and even
casts out demons. We witnessed
that while we were taping and
caught it all on camera!”
So far his team has captured
stories in twelve countries.

Samson sputtered, coughed, and
then rumbled to life. Yippee! It’s
my turn to drive Samson and pull
the one-way plow!
Under my Grand Dad’s
watchful eye I put the tractor in
gear. My heart raced as I started
across the field, anxiously look-
ing over my shoulder to see how
I was doing. I turned my focus
back and forth, trying my best to
produce a straight furrow.
As we reached the end of the
half-mile field, I about burst with
pride. Hopping off the tractor,
I jumped into the pickup with
Grand Dad, and we drove to the
point where I’d started. But look-

I surveyed the iron beast
before me. It was so strong
and tough that we’d named the
big green Oliver-80 “Samson”!

have any trouble starting him by
hand, so I spit on my palms (to
get a better grip) and grabbed
