Realmente lejana est la fecha en que por decisin papal los Caballeros Templarios fueron dispersados y luego perseguidos. Este grupo de hombres vestidos de trajes blancos con una cruz colorada al frente fue creado como un selecto grupo de defensores de los santos lugares, sobre todo el gran templo de Jerusaln, del cual toman el nombre de los Caballeros del Templo. Muchas historias se han contado sobre ellos y de su bsqueda del santo grial o de secretos y riquezas que celosamente supieron esconder al comn de los mortales. Su legendario pasado ha servido para llenar miles de pginas de novelas, historias, cuentos, especulaciones que llegan al extremo de afirmar que custodiaban a Mara Magdalena y a un supuesto hijo que Jess el Cristo habra tenido con ella. Mucha imaginacin que no logr superar, otra vez, la realidad. En los actuales momentos se libra una guerra sin cuartel entre un grupo que se ha dado por llamar las autodefensas y nada ms y nada menos que los Caballeros Templarios. Pero no se los imagine a estos ltimos caballeros montados a caballo y vistiendo largas sotanas. No se trata de una reencarnacin o resurreccin de los celebrrimos defensores de cruzados y otros sujetos de la edad media. No. Se trata de un feroz grupo de traficantes que han tomado el nombre de los Caballeros Templarios dedicados a cometer extorsiones, violaciones y asesinatos en el estado mexicano de Michoacn. En este estado, en el ao 2012, 55 de cada 100 personas eran pobres, 2.44 millones en nmeros absolutos, de las cuales 650 mil son pobres extremas. A esto se suma el retraso educativo y la recesin laboral que aument un 29 por ciento, lo que hace las cosas muy pero muy difciles en esa entidad federal. Tambin, por mucho tiempo, los narcotraficantes han ejercido el poder de manera violenta y sdica, dndose por ejemplo el caso de secuestrar a las mujeres de sus adversarios y no devolverlas hasta que no estuvieran embarazadas, entre otras joyitas. Se justifique o no, el hecho es que los civiles han decidido armarse, desde hace ya un ao, y para ello deben contar con cierta complacencia del poder central, porque por lo que se ve en la imgenes, este grupo se ha aprovisionado de armamento moderno y no de simples machetes o palos para defenderse, y como la cosa se est saliendo de su cauce, ahora el gobierno mexicano exige a estas autodefensas que entreguen sus armas, a lo que stas se niegan porque la razn por la que se organizaron an esta de lo ms saludable: el desptico poder de los Caballeros Templarios. Quienes, por otra parte, parecen contar con cierto apoyo popular, ya que algunos los consideran como una hermandad al servicio del pueblo, cuyos principios (53) han sido recogidos en un pequeo cuadernito que en su momento repartieron de casa en casa. Entre sus lineamientos, Los Caballeros Templarios dicen reconocer el derecho de los pueblos y las naciones a gobernarse a s mismos dentro de su medio econmico natural y se pronuncian por el apoyo a la libertad de expresin, de conciencia y de religin, incluida la diversidad de creencias, pues el Templario deber intentar entender cmo otros se acercan a Dios. En el da de hoy las autodefensas no creen en estos predicamentos y el enfrentamiento es frontal, de all que quepa preguntarse Y cundo habr paz para las familias en Michoacn? No. It is a fierce group of traffickers who have taken the name of the Knights Templar and who are devoted to commit extortion, rape and murder in the Mexican state of Michoacn. In this state, in 2012, 55 people of every 100 were poor, 2.44 million in absolute numbers, of which 650,000 are extremely poor. Adding to this is the educational underdevelopment and the work recession that increased 29 percent, which makes things very, very difficult in this federal entity. Among its guidelines, the Knights Templar say to recognize the right of peoples and nations to govern themselves within their natural economic environment and take a stand for support for freedom of expression, conscience and religion, including the diversity of beliefs, because the Templar should try to understand how others get close to God. Today the self-defense groups do not believe in these predicaments and the fighting is frontal, hence fits to wonder, and when will be there peace for families in Michoacn?

Luisa Ortiz-Aponte, Amparo Soria y sus dos hijas
Programa Familiar Comunidad Saludable

Antes de que ella se mudara a Delaware, Amparo Soria vivi en Illinois. Cuando se enferm, fue a un centro de salud local. Poco despus, recibi una factura por ms de $1,000.
Cuando me enferm de nuevo, no volv porque no poda pagarlo, dijo. En Delaware, Soria se reuni de nuevo con su marido y consigui un trabajo con un servicio de limpieza que hace trabajos para Christiana Care. La pareja se estableci en Newark con un hijo y una hija, la menor de seis hermanos. Lejos de amigos y familiares en Mxico, se preocupaba por mantener a la familia saludable. Su hijo de 17 aos de edad se lastim la cabeza en un accidente. Su hija de 12 aos de edad tiene escoliosis, una curvatura de la columna vertebral. Era difcil saber qu hacer o por dnde empezar, porque no tengo seguro, dijo ella. Soria obtuvo la informacin que necesitaba de su jefe, Guadalupe Castaeda, una promotora activa entrenada por el personal del departamento de Community Health Outreach & Education de Christiana Care. Las promotoras son latinas que promueven el bienestar y las pruebas de deteccin de cncer en la comunidad hispana. Castaeda le sugiri a Soria que contactara Healthy Families, un programa gratuito administrado por Christiana Care y el Centro Comunitario Latinoamericano (LACC por sus siglas en ingls ) para las familias en el Condado New Castle que quieren llevar una vida ms saludable. El programa ayuda a las familias, incluidas personas que no tienen seguro, personas que necesitan pruebas de deteccin y atencin preventiva, pacientes con enfermedades crnicas y nios con asma. El programa est financiado por el Fondo Cannon Arsht. Soria llam a Luisa Ortiz-Aponte, la directora del programa en Christiana Care. Ortiz- Aponte, quien es bilinge, ayud a Soria a identificar diversos recursos a travs de las muchas relaciones de Christiana Care. Community Healthy Family Program
Before she moved to Delaware, Amparo Soria lived in Illinois. When she was ill, she went to a local health center. Soon after, she received a bill for more than $1,000.
When I got sick again, I did not go back because I could not afford it, she said. In Delaware, Soria was reunited with her husband and got a job with a cleaning service that does work for Christiana Care. The couple settled in Newark with a son and daughter, the youngest of six children. Far from friends and family members in Mexico, she worried about keeping the family healthy. Her 17-year-old son hurt his head in an accident. Her 12-year-old daughter has scoliosis, a curvature of the spine. It was hard to know what to do or where to begin because I dont have insurance, she said. Soria got the information she needed from her boss, Guadalupe Castaneda, an active promotora trained by Christiana Cares Community Health Outreach and Education staff. Promotoras are Latinas
who promote wellness and screenings for cancer throughout the Hispanic community. Castaneda suggested Soria contact Healthy Families, a free program administered by Christiana Care and the Latin American Community Center (LACC) for families in New Castle County who want to lead healthier lives. The program helps families, including people without insurance, individuals who need screenings and preventative care, patients with chronic diseases and children with asthma. It is funded by the Arsht Cannon Fund. Soria called Luisa Ortiz-Aponte, the program manager at Christiana Care. Ortiz-Aponte, who is bilingual, helped Soria to identify various resources through Christiana Cares many relationships. The first step was providing Soria with information so that she could choose a primary care provider who speaks Spanish at a location that is convenient to her home. When Sorias son hurt his head, Ortiz-Aponte helped her to make the connections necessary to obtain a CT scan to make certain his injury did not require further treatment. Sorias daughter is getting the care she needs, too. In February, she will undergo surgery at Nemours/ Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children. Ortiz-Aponte also is working on a referral for Sorias husband, who has back problems. There are many places where people can get care and screenings but they might not know where to go or how to get started, Ortiz-Aponte said. We are here to help. Dr. Marielena Velez de Brown, who coordinates Healthy Families at the LACC in Wilmington, said the program also can help people to overcome obstacles to care. We often see people who work several part-time jobs, she said. The key might be finding a doctor with extended office hours. At 50, Soria is past the recommended age of 40 for a first mammogram. She received a free screening at the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center & Research Institute. On a recent morning, she came for follow-up tests ordered by her doctor after the mammogram revealed a mass. Soria was accompanied by her older daughters, Rosa Isela and Maria Isabel, who were visiting from Mexico. A certified medical interpreter was waiting to help. I am very grateful to Healthy Families and to Luisa, who held my hand and showed me where I needed to go, she said. The program and the promotoras are connecting families with services for many health care needs, including diabetes, asthma, cancer screenings, HIV testing, dental care and other concerns. It takes grassroots people to expand our ability to find families who need help, said Nora Katurakes, manager, Community Outreach and Education at the Graham Cancer Center. Un Punto de Vista A Matter Of View

Ao Nuevo
Aqu estamos, un par de semanas en el ao 2014. El sonido de esta expresin evoca sentimientos de esperanza , borrn y cuenta nueva , o simplemente un nuevo comienzo para un nuevo ao . No quiero resoluciones de Ao Nuevo para m, por favor, pero tal vez algo para enriquecer mi espritu. A lo mejor ste es el ao para ser ms amable conmigo y con los dems de una manera desinteresada. A dnde voy con esto? Pues bien, durante los ltimos cuatro aos me he estado dejando crecer el pelo. S, desde hace varios aos, no luzco como la mujer en la foto de mi columna. Lo creas o no, mi cabello me llegaba a la cintura porque la ltima vez que me cort el pelo fue en 2009 despus de que mi amiga Dianne perdi su batalla contra el cncer. Recuerdo vivamente su llanto mientras me mostraba cmo estaba perdiendo su cabello debido a tratamientos de quimioterapia y cmo ella dijo que yo no tena que preocuparme por ello porque yo tena un hermoso cabello grueso. En ese entonces yo le dije mi pelo no me define, yo lo defino a l. Y para mostrar mi amor y apoyo a ella, ese mismo da, tan pronto como llegu a casa, me cort el pelo usando las tijeras de mi hijo. Desde entonces y despus de su muerte, no me he cortado el pelo. Despus de cuatro aos, decid que en su honor, me gustara donar mi cabello para un paciente de cncer en necesidad de una peluca. El 31 de diciembre tuve una cita en la maana con Brenda para cortarme el pelo. Pens que esto sera una maravillosa manera de empezar un nuevo ao con una nueva imagen, un nuevo yo! Tengo que decir que nunca me he sentido mejor en hacer un acto tan desinteresado de la bondad y amor. Es divertido, pero cuando la gente me ve me dicen oh no, te cortaste el pelo, tu hermoso pelo, ests loca?... y no paran de comentar al respecto. Sin embargo, tan pronto como les digo Yo don mi pelo sus voces y actitud cambian por completo a una respuesta ms agradable y un tanto cariosa y de admiracin hacia m. Me pregunto por qu? Es por el hecho de hacer algo desinteresado y drstico? Nos hemos convertido de tal manera en una sociedad del yo que nos hemos olvidado cmo dar? Este acto no fue una resolucin de Ao Nuevo de mi parte. A pesar de que muchos de mis amigos han compartido conmigo algunas de sus resoluciones, y parece gracioso pero otros ya han abandonado su resolucin, ya yo no me presiono a m misma para hacer ninguna resolucin. En general , slo quiero llegar a ser una persona mejor a mi propio paso y ritmo. Estoy muy cansada de prometerme a m misma que ste es el ao para perder peso, o hacer ms ejercicio, comer ms saludable e incluso utilizar ms el hilo dental. Pero todos sabemos que esas resoluciones de Ao Nuevo slo duran un par de semanas, si es que siquiera comienzan. Hacindonos sentir como si nos hemos fallado nosotros mismos por no perseverar con nuestras resoluciones. He decidido que tengo que ser ms amable conmigo misma y perdonarme a m misma ya los dems. Liberar todos esos sentimientos de rabia, dolor y frustracin no es algo fcil de hacer, pero tengan en cuenta que no se trata de ellos u otros. Esto se trata de m, de nosotros y de nuestro espritu y de desprenderse del dolor y del dao que nos estn conteniendo. Tambin nos libera de equipaje que es posible que hayamos estado llevando y que ya no nos sirve de nada. El acto de la liberacin y el perdn promueve la curacin y nos da la oportunidad de seguir adelante. Es saludable para nuestras mentes y nuestras almas y es entonces cuando nos permitimos crecer y mantenernos sanos y menos estresados! Decidan lo que decidan, no se olviden que no hay una resolucin incorrecta. Feliz 2014 y brindo para que sean personas mejores y ms saludables!
New Year
Here we are, a couple of weeks into 2014. The sound of it evokes feelings of hope, clean slate, or just new beginnings for a brand new year. No New Years resolutions for me please, but maybe something to enrich my spirit. Maybe it is the year to be kinder towards me and others in a selfless way. Where am I going with this? Well, for the past four years I have been letting my hair grow. Yes, for several years now, I have not looked like the woman on my columns pic. Believe it or not, my hair was down to my waist because last time I had a haircut was back in 2009 after my friend Dianne lost her battle to cancer. I vividly remember her crying while showing me how she was losing her hair due to chemo treatment and how she said that I didnt have to worry about it because I had beautiful thick hair. Back then I told her hair doesnt define me, I define it. And to show my love and support to her, that same day as soon as I got home, I clipped my hair off using my sons clippers. Since then and after her passing, I have not cut my hair. After four years, I decided that in her honor, I would donate my hair to a cancer patient in need of a wig. On December 31st I had a morning appointment with Brenda to cut my hair. I thought that this would be a wonderful way to start a brand new year with a new look, a new me! I have to say that I have never felt better in doing such a selfless act of kindness and love. Is funny, but when people see me they say to me oh no, you cut your hair, your beautiful hair, are you crazy... and they just go on and on about it. However, as soon as I say I donated my hair their voices and attitude completely changes to a kinder and somewhat loving and admiring response toward me. I wonder why? Is it because of the act of doing something selfless and drastic? Have we become such a me society that we have forgotten how to give? This act was not a New Years resolution on my part. Even though many of my friends have shared with me some of their resolutions, and funny to say that others have already quit to that attempt, I no longer pressure myself to making any resolutions. Overall, I just want to become a better person at my own pace and rhythm. Very tired of promising myself that this is the year to lose weight, or exercise more, eat healthier and even floss more! But we all know, that those New Years resolutions may only last a couple of weeks, if they even take off. Making us feel as though we have failed ourselves for not staying on course with our resolutions. I have decided that I need to be kinder to myself and forgive myself and others. Releasing all those feelings of anger, hurt and frustration is not something that is easy to do, but be mindful that this is not about them or others. This is about me, us and our spirit and the letting go of the pain and the hurt that is holding us back. It also releases us from baggage that we may have been carrying that serves us no more. The act of releasing and forgiving promotes healing and gives us the opportunity to move on. It is healthy for our minds and our souls and that is when we allow growth to enter and keep us healthy and less stressed! Whatever you decide, dont forget that there is no wrong resolution. Happy New 2014 and I cheer for a better and healthier you!

TRUTH, JUSTICE AND THE AMERICAN WAY.

Truth, justice and the American way are discarded by of all people those who call themselves patriots and true Americans on the subjects of Immigration and immigration reform. This is important as crunch time for congress is upon us what with their holiday home visits over and their return to the capitol to conduct election year business. Will congress use truth as the measure of the issues involved? That will be difficult for the opponents live and breathe misinformation and outright falsehoods. For example, they chant that there are 30 million illegal aliens in the U.S. Just how do they arrive at that number? They just make it up -- for not a single legitimate source such as the Census Bureau, Department of Homeland Security Immigration division or any legitimate think tank estimates that there are more than 12 million people in the country illegally. Not only is there no federal agency that counts people issuing any counts larger than 11-12 million but Homeland estimates that half of those here illegally enter legally and overstay legitimate visas. Is their estimate of 30-million people true or false? FALSE. Is it possible that they arrive at the 30-million number because they consider all Hispanics of Mexican backgrounds to be illegal? Other than is an outright lie, their view is constructed from their inability to accept that two thirds of all 53 million (est.) Hispanics are of Mexican origin with the vast majority being native born American citizens. Their logic appears to be that because so many illegally present people are Mexican, all Mexican origin people must be illegals. Can it be bigotry that they rely on to conjure up their fiction of 30-million illegals? Can their excuse be that all Mexicans and Mexican Americans look alike, legal and illegal? Another myth is that illegally present Mexicans have a high crime rate. Lets use some Sentencing Project studies that concluded in 2005 that 480 Whites per hundred thousand were incarcerated in State of Florida prisons, 2615 Blacks per hundred thousand and only 382 Hispanics which must include some here illegally. Nationally the federal Bureau of Prisons and Bureau of Prison Statistics reports that Whites nationally are incarcerated at the Florida rate and Blacks about half the Florida rate (1100) while Hispanics are about double the Florida rate (650). These figures include all Hispanics, not just Mexican nationals here illegally. Another version of this myth includes declarations that 12 Americans are murdered every day by illegals from Mexico alone. Their source: This comes from a retired Immigration officer who gave that number to the office of Congressman Steve King (R-IA) that published it in a newsletter. There is no official statistic from any government agency, university or non-profit organization, none, that has any such statistic. Speaking of deaths caused by illegally present Mexicans, the critics declare that 4000 Americans are killed every year by illegally present drivers. Is this number from state and federal highway agencies or law enforcement? No. It also is a fictional statistic. Certainly there may be some auto accidents and deaths caused by illegally present Mexicans but there are no official statistics for anyone to use. As there are no such statistics, perhaps the critic-mythmakers should look at San Diego County, the most populous American county on the border with one of Mexicos largest cities, Tijuana. The California Highway Patrol reports that 650,000 Mexican trucks enter and drive around San Diego County a year, 20,000 a day, five days a week. Add to these 650,000 legal drivers some who arent legal as one can assume there are some illegally present drivers on the same roads. How many Americans are killed by these hundreds of thousands Mexican drivers in San Diego County? Who knows? Cant remember a single one in the past two or three years. There is one interesting statistic about Americans killed on our roads; 5000 are killed every year by licensed commercial truckers. Maybe some of them look Mexican, illegally present Mexicans. So where is the crime wave? Studies by legitimate sources indicate that native born Americans are ten times more likely to commit crimes than any immigrant much less Mexicans immigrants, legal and illegal. How, they ask, are illegally present people able to utilize rights such as a fair trial, confronting witnesses, attend public schools, be counted in the Census, etc.; they are illegally here arent they? Yes, they are, so what? There is no provision in the Constitution that denies rights to anyone who is not a citizen. In fact most references to people are persons not citizens. The use of the word citizen is used to define qualifications for office such as natural born citizen for President. Truth, justice and the American Constitution, assaulted as they are by ignorance -nevertheless are what we live by, thankfully. Virginia Governor George Allen decided his state needed uniform measures to elevate outcomes. Pennsylvanias Tom Ridge created a tax credit program to fund school choice scholarships and secured a hard-fought charter school law. And Jeb Bush of Florida oversaw some of the deepest education policy changes the nation has ever seen. That fervor ignited a movement of educators, parents, and community leaders who started schools, turned around existing ones, became legislators, and created innovations in learning and school delivery, including digital learning. What was once a fast and furious run for school reform from the ground up has come to a steady crawl, incapable of reversing educational decline. When governors are strong, they counter special interests teachers unions, school boards associations, and the like that inhibit progress. When governors are weak, policies emanate from above to supplant state programs. Apathetic or timid governors wait for bills to reach their desks, allow special interests to organize, and govern by favorability ratings. The result is a lack of commitment to executing much needed changes. For example, charter schools are known to be hotbeds of innovation or providers of quality education. Despite numerous studies attesting to their progress in closing the achievement gap, charter schools are still expanding in low numbers in some states, and exist with policies that hamstring those who wish to open them in others. It sounds dramatic that 42 states and D.C. have charter laws, but only half that number have any vibrant charter environment that can help a small number of students. State leaders are key to creating more options, yet laws that need to be improved are compromised from the first discussions. Kentucky Gov. Steve Bashear recently remarked that his state didnt need charter schools because the education system was improving, despite evidence to the contrary. He was confusing activity and effort with results, a common problem among todays leaders. Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett once declared education a top priority but has achieved little reform despite his partys full control of the state legislature. Even with Chris Christie, New Jersey moved forward in requiring teachers be evaluated as a condition of employment, yet the final compromise with unions resulted in more ways to skirt the system. Some state officials show promise of becoming tomorrows reform leaders. Wisconsins Scott Walker looked unions in the eye and didnt blink. Louisianas Bobby Jindal has set records for positive education reform lawmaking in a state where a devastating storm served as a catalyst for a new public education landscape. Both have state legislatures excited to join them in fighting the status quo. Make no mistake the U.S. education system remains in crisis and the achievement gap between poor and minority students and the rest of society remains wide. Most people are aware that the solution is not more money or superficial changes. The key to solving the crisis is electing governors who understand that they have the power to change a system, and holding them accountable to do so. With 36 gubernatorial elections underway in 2014, we should all resolve to make education our top priority when we take to the polls in November. Now that the holidays are behind us, its time to take stock of how we are doing, and set resolutions for the New Year. According to the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), U.S. students are lagging behind. 2012 results show the U.S. is on a rapid decline, ranking 36th in math, 24th in reading, and 28th in science. On the Nations Report Card (NAEP), only 34% of 8th graders are proficient in reading and math. Where have we gone wrong? Quite simply, weve elected the wrong people. In response to children demonstrating less proficiency, the Governors of the 1980s started a movement that reduced federal meddling in state policy and united both parties over issues of choice and accountability. Then-Governors Lamar Alexander of Tennessee and Bill Clinton of Arkansas embraced transformative changes, coalesced other state leaders into an outspoken force, and brought their efforts to national prominence at a groundbreaking policy-making summit in Charlottesville, VA. Governor Tommy Thompson partnered with Democratic and African-American lawmaker Polly Williams to enact the nations first voucher program for the neediest children. Bold leadership in the 1990s saw then-Michigan Governor John Engler buck his own party to equalize school funding, permit parent choices, and enact a charter school law that remains a national model today. Abuse of Power Lawsuit Filed Against DNREC

Agencys new emission permit fees violate state constitution
The Caesar Rodney Institute (CRI) announced that David Stevenson, Director of the Center for Energy Competitiveness at CRI, is among four plaintiffs who filed a lawsuit last week against DNREC and DNREC Secretary Colin OMara. The complaint asserts Secretary OMara has not been delegated the power to reduce the agencys new carbon emissions goals, which is the basis for raising the carbon dioxide permit fees. The plaintiffs also believe DNREC is violating the Delaware Constitution by issuing a regulation on carbon dioxide emission permit fees without the state legislature, as required in the state constitution. This new regulatory ruling will cost Delaware families and businesses over $50 million a year in fees collected through consumers electric bills. Multiple parties warned DNREC this decision was a potential violation of the Delaware Constitution in public comment sessions but the comments were ignored, Stevenson explained. The state constitution specifically requires that all taxes and fees must be approved by a 3/5 majority in each legislative chamber. One of the biggest debates in the legislature this year was over a tax increase, Plaintiff and State Representative Harold Jack Peterman said. Twenty-two legislators opposed an attempt by Delmarva Power to raise electric rates, and both issues involved less money than this. Twenty-five percent of the money collected must be spent on energy efficiency projects and on helping people pay their electric bills, according to a multi-state Memorandum of Understanding. Unlike most state spending, the legislature has no say in how the money raised from this fee increase will be spent. The other plaintiffs are: Christian Hudson, of Hudson Management and Sam Yoder & Sons in Greenwood; and John Moore, CEO of Acorn Energy in Wilmington and a CRI board member. Businesses are already struggling with high electric bills; we dont need to add to the problem and make Delaware less competitive, Hudson said. The regulatory change DNREC is proposing doesnt appear to be about the environment but rather about raising more state revenue, Moore said. The case will be heard by Judge Richard F. It will be open to all students from the 3 Middle Schools and the 3 High Schools in the Brandywine School District. The screenings - both in the Brandywine School District and eventually throughout the state - will be FREE to students. The mission of HEART IN THE GAME is to create awareness of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) in children and young adults through the formation of community access programs in 1) ECG Screening 2) CPR Training and 3) AED (Automated External Defibrillator) Training. Our goal is to screen every middle school and high school student in Delaware....for FREE. Each child should have one screening in both middle and high school. During each event, the New Castle County EMS professionals will train in both Hands Only CPR and use of AED. Despus de 15 aos por primera vez Alejandro regres a su pas y lugar de nacimiento Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela en agosto del 2011. En esa ocasin fue a despedirse de su pap Jos Vilibardo Surez Barrero, quien muri poco despus de cncer. Por segunda vez regres a Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela el pasado diciembre de 2013 a reunirse con toda su familia, y asistir como padrino a una boda familiar. Familiares que estuvieron con l en la boda hablan de cun orgulloso Alejandro estaba de su esposa Miriam y de sus hijos, y no para de nombrar todos los sitios donde l quera ir a compartir con ellos cuando llegaran. Miriam y los nios tenan planeado viajar a Venezuela por primera vez a conocer la familia de Alejandro y reencontrase con l para recibir la Navidad el 24 de Diciembre, y recibir el ao nuevo, slo que l viaj unos das antes para asistir a la boda. Sin saber que en la madrugada del 21 de Diciembre despus de la ceremonia de casamiento y de compartir con toda su familia y amigos, Alejandro muri en un accidente automovilstico que le arrebat la vida, los sueos, los planes, la vida perfecta junto a su familia. En el accidente tambin muri instantneamente una pareja de 24 aos de edad, y quedaron lesionados 2 ms. Dej desconsolada a su esposa: Miriam Surez Zevallos, al quien l llamaba su Mueca. El amor de ellos fue a primera vista. Se conocieron en Septiembre del 2010, se hicieron novios, se comprometieron, se casaron, compraron casa y lleg Alejandrito Jr., todo era como un sueo perfecto. Dej dos hijos: Alejandro Jacob Surez, de 11 meses, y Christian A. Lozada de 7 aos (una de las cosas admirables de Alejandro es que aunque Christian era su hijastro, siempre se refera a l como su hijo). Tambin dej a toda su familia y amigos inundados por tristeza por la inesperada partida de un muchacho tan joven lleno de vida y de tantos sueos. Hasta el ltimo momento Alejandro luch por su vida, pero muri al llegar al hospital. Al enterarse de tan trgica noticia Miriam su esposa viaj con su corazn destrozado a Venezuela a reencontrarse con su amor, y sus hijos se quedaron en USA con la familia, todos los planes cambiaron drsticamente. Alejandro Surez vivir en Alejandrito Surez Jr., vivir en los recuerdos bellos con su familia, aunque su cuerpo no est, siempre su presencia se har sentir. Simn Alejandro Surez Miranda was born on June 3, 1983 in Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela, and died in a tragic accident in the same city on December 21, 2013.
He came to USA at age 13, attended Glasgow High School and then worked as Manager of Pats Pizza. Simn Alejandro was the youngest of 5 siblings, the baby of the family. Those who knew him remember him as a fighter, a good husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend! After 15 years, for the first time, Alejandro returned to his country and birthplace: Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela, in August 2011. This time it was to say goodbye to his dad, Jos Vilibardo Surez Barrero, who died of cancer shortly after. For the second time he returned to Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela, in December 2013 to meet with all his family and attend a family wedding as best man. Relatives who were with him at the wedding recall how proud Alejandro was of his wife Miriam and their children, and how he couldnt stop naming all the places he wanted to go to share with them when they arrived. Miriam and the kids had planned to travel to Venezuela for the first time to meet Alejandros family and be reunited with him for Christmas Eve, and then spend New Year together, but he traveled before they did to attend the wedding. On early morning hours of December 21, after the wedding ceremony and having shared with all his family and friends, Alejandro died in a car accident that took the life, dreams, plans, and perfect life with his family. Instantly in the accident died a young couple of 24 years old, and two more were injured. He left disconsolate his wife Miriam Surez Zevallos, whom he called his Doll. Theirs was love was at first sight. They met in September 2010, started dating, got engaged, got married, bought a house and Alejandrito Jr. arrived, everything was like a perfect dream. He is survived by his wife and two sons: Alejandro Jacob Surez, 11 months, and Christian A. Lozada 7 years old (one of the admirable things about Alejandro is that although Christian was his stepson, he always referred to him as his son.) He also left his entire family and friends flooded with sadness at the unexpected departure of such a young person full of life and many dreams. Until the last moment Alejandro fought for his life, but died on arrival at hospital. Upon hearing this tragic news, his wife Miriam traveled with her heart broken to Venezuela to meet his love, and his children stayed with family in USA, all plans changed drastically. Alejandro Surez will always live in Alejandrito Surez Jr., will live in the beautiful memories with his family, and although his body is not here, his presence will always be felt. El distrito escolar Red Clay, en Wilmington, quiere llevar a cabo un plan para hacer sus escuelas ms inclusivas.
>Gabriel Pilonieta-Blanco Sin embargo, en la reunin de la junta directiva del distrito que se llev a cabo el mircoles 15 de enero, las opiniones fueron encontradas y, sobre todo, sali a flote que en los planes de los administradores, las familias han sido dejadas de lado. Segn informa la pgina web del distrito, la Junta Educativa de Red Clay solicit que se lleven a cabo sesiones de informacin pblica en cada escuela de Red Clay para explicar con detalle la nueva propuesta que tiene como meta desplazar los Programas de Educacin Especial y las Escuelas Especiales para convertirlas en escuelas en el hogar. Pero, al menos hasta ahora, ese plan no est disponible para que las personas interesadas lo conozcan. En resumen el plan plantea que cada estudiante vaya a la escuela de su vecindario. Esto traer como consecuencia que escuelas como, Mote Elementary, que cuenta con un fuerte programa de enseanza para estudiantes que no hablan ingls, dejen de recibir a estudiantes de todas partes (en este momento el 85% de sus alumnos son hispanos) y estos a su vez seran reubicados. Muchos maestros de Mote dieron su testimonio. Algunos llegaron hasta las lgrimas de la emocin durante la reunin de la junta haciendo hincapi que, el sentimiento de familia es uno que todo maestro, empleado, padre y estudiante puede compartir. Es fcil desarrollar dicho sentimiento
La sensacin que se tiene al respecto es que se quieren hacer cambios para los que las escuelas no estn preparadas y, se preguntan, s los nios se van a cambiar de escuela, perdiendo no solo a sus compaeros y maestros con lo que ya ha desarrollado una relacin, sino que no hay suficiente personal preparado para dar continuidad al programa de enseanza acadmico. Por ejemplo la seora Maria Martinez comento que a su hijo le corresponde una escuela en Newark, donde nadie habla espaol y ella prefiere llevarlo a Mote, all si est aprendiendo de verdad dice. Es importante, nos parece, que los padres asistan masivamente a las futuras presentaciones del plan Entendiendo la Visin Inclusiva de Red Clay. sta presentacin explicar cmo fue creado el plan, comenzando por el plan estratgico del distrito de revisar los programas de Aprendizaje de Ingls como Segunda Lengua y de Educacin Especial con los padres, maestros, ayudantes profesionales y administradores. A Michael Martinez, tambin maestro de Mote, le parece una injusticia que quieran implementar estas decisiones sin consultar a las familias afectadas. The district authorities must consider a better way to communicate with the families if they wish to be taken seriously. Many families do not own computers or have access to the internet, and most of the information has not been translated into Spanish. In any case, March has been set as the tentative month for the plan to begin, however more information sessions have been requested. For now, please participate in the meetings where your opinion will be well received.
However, the Board of Education meeting that took place on Wednesday January 15th saw opinion clashes, making it evident that, within the administrative plans, the families have been pushed aside. According to the District web page, at the request of the Red Clay Board of Education the district has scheduled a public information session at every Red Clay school to further explain a proposal to transition Special Programs and Special Schools to home schools. On the other hand, until now, that proposal has not been made available for the public. In summary, the idea is that every student would be relocated to a school in their neighborhood. This would mean that schools, such as Mote Elementary whose curriculum includes English teaching as a second language, would be less diverse (Mote counts with an 85% of Hispanic students) and that these programs, for students with language needs, would be terminated. Many teachers from Mote Elementary gave their testimony. Teared eyed and emotional, they shared their feelings during the School Board meeting. The feeling of family is one that any teacher, support staff, parent and student will express to you. It is easy to develop such feelings at this school because of the successful programs that Mote has in place, said teacher Kristi Chase, their grades and our test scores are the best they have ever been. Our students want to come to school. Do not take this away from our students. This is what education is all about: challenging students, building confidence and allowing them to succeed. Leave our students at Mote. The presentation will include information included in a previously released report, called Academic Success for All: Red Clays Plan for Inclusive Instruction--Moving More Inclusively and additional information, including specific numbers on how many Special Education students would be assigned to each school, staffing ratios to students, and an overview of the planning process, which began in July 2012. The overall feeling is that an unexpected change, for which schools are not prepared, is coming. Everyone is asking what will happen to the students, whom have already created bonds with peers and teachers, and if there are enough staff members to continue with the academic program mentioned previously. Maria Martinez, for example, mentioned that her child would have to transfer to a school in Newark, where no one speaks Spanish. She would prefer to send her child to Mote, where learning does take place Martinez said. It appears important, that many parents go to all future presentations of the plan called Understanding Red Clays Vision for Inclusive Schools. The presentation will outline how the plan was created, beginning with direction from the district Strategic Plan to review the English Language Learners (ELL), and the Special Education programs with a stakeholders group of parents, teachers, paraprofessionals and administrators. Michael Martinez, also a teacher at Mote, believes that it is an injustice that they want to make these changes without consulting the families who will be affected, especially those families that are always interested in their children academic progress. Although some Hispanic families raised their concerns at the meeting this past Tuesday, more families are needed in order to create an informed opinion. Get Checked for Colorectal Cancer

If youre age 50 or older and havent been checked for colorectal cancer, you should.
Colorectal cancer is the third most common type of cancer in both men and women. Nearly 137,000 Americans a year are diagnosed with colorectal cancer and more than 51,000 die from the disease. Doctors conduct screening exams or tests to check for abnormal growths called polyps that can sometimes lead to colorectal cancer or to detect the disease early so it can be treated successfully. But too many Hispanics who should have these tests arent getting them, according to a recent report by the federal governments Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). The agency found that less than half of Hispanics ages 50 to 75 report ever being checked for colorectal cancer. By comparison, nearly two-thirds of Whites the same age report being examined for colorectal cancer. AHRQ also found that Hispanics are less likely than Whites to get checked for colorectal cancer even when they have private health insurance or Medicare. This suggests that having health insurance doesnt always mean a person will receive the preventive health exams they need. Not knowing the danger of colorectal cancer and ways to detect the disease is a barrier, as can be cultural attitudes about seeing doctors unless youre sick. This may help explain why privately insured Hispanics are nearly 20 percent less likely to go visit the doctor at least once a year. AHRQ -- a branch of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services -- offers free online guides and podcasts to preventive health tests in Spanish. Nuestro Presidente, Javier Torrijos, lidera estas iniciativas y apoya nuestro trabajo de equipo. El poder de la comunidad al enviarnos sus comentarios tendr un efecto positivo multiplicador para todos. Esperamos que nos escriban. Sonia Aguilar: El subcomit de Desarrollo Econmico ofreci en la primavera un seminario titulado Cmo Solicitar Un Empleo Estatal. Lideramos los pasos para la creacin del portal de la red de la Comisin. Este Febrero empezar a funcionar en sus comunidades el Centro de Recursos de Negocio Hispano Americano, centrado en apoyar a los negocios de su comunidad. Una persona bilinge experta en negocios estar disponible para ayudar a quienes quieran empezar un negocio, pero no sabe cmo empezar. Este Centro operar en los Centros de Trabajo de las Bibliotecas de Seaford, Georgetown, Dover y Wilmington. Para enterarse qu das y el horario visite nuestro portal en: www.hispanic.delaware.gov. Ofreceremos asistencia personal, cursos de negocios en Ingls y Espaol titulados Cmo Hacer Negocio en Delaware y le asistiremos para expandir su negocio. Kevin Smith: El subcomit Vivienda enviar una carta a las agencias de Delaware que han recibido financiamiento del gobierno, con el fin de recordarles que su obligacin es cumplir con los estndares de la ley de Dominio Limitado del Ingls Limitado (LEP, por sus siglas en ingls) que exige tener traductores para atender al pblico. Participamos tambin en entrevistas de radio, auspicio de eventos y otros eventos de la comunidad. Sandra Splanger: El subcomit Educacin ha apoyado a los Estudiantes Que Aprenden Ingls, quien son en su mayora latinos. Ha pedido que haya financiacin directa para este programa y que se promueva el dominio del Ingls para todos los profesores de Delaware. Se han hecho presentaciones, solicitudes a la Asociacin Escolar del Estado y al Gobernador Markel. Tanisha Merced: El subcomit Legal y de Justicia Social ha apoyado a los otros subcomits de Transportacin, de Vivienda y a la Coalicin de Licencias de Manejo Privilegiadas. Se est discutiendo si es posible obtener Licencias Privilegiadas de Manejo, la necesidad de que se empleen personas bilinges en las agencias para servir mejor, y que se den exanimaciones mentales bilinges. Organizaremos el evento nuevamente el Sbado, 4 de Octubre, 2014. Les ruego ponerlo en su calendario. El evento es un da completo que empieza a las 10:00 am con una Feria de la Salud. Our Chair, Javier Torrijos, lead all these efforts and support our team work. We hope to receive your comments, which will have a positive ripple effect for all.
Sonia Aguilar: The Economic Development subcommittee offered this past spring a Job seminar on How to Apply for a State Job. We led the development and rollout of the new Delaware Hispanic Commission Website. Coming soon (February 2014) to your community is the Hispanic American Business Resource Center, focused on serving the business needs of the Hispanic community .A bilingual business representative will be available to help anyone who want to start a business but does not know where to begin. This center will operate out of the community libraries Job Centers located in Seaford, Georgetown, Dover and Wilmington libraries. For dates and times visit our website www.hispanic.delaware.gov. We will offer one-on-one business consultant, offer business courses in Spanish and English on How to do business in Delaware, and/or assist you in expanding an existing business. Kevin Smith: The Housing subcommittee is in the process of releasing a letter to agencies in Delaware who have received government funding, reminding them of their obligation to meet Limited English Proficiency (LEP) standards in providing services to clients. This will better prepare agencies to serve Hispanics in Delaware.
Jennifer Cohan: The Transportation Committee for expanded public transit specifically in Sussex County and two new routes are scheduled to be added in 2015. The subcommittee also ensured that all DMV documentation (including website) is translated into Spanish. We did publish the white paper on Driver Privilege Card, and the Commercial Driver License guide into Spanish (We are one of only two states in the nation) to encourage CDL job opportunities. We also did many community events, reoccurring radio shows and sponsorships of events. Sandra Splanger: During 2013, the Education Subcommittee has advocated for the support of English Language Learning students (majority are Latinos). This includes a request for a direct funding stream through the state unit count formula and English proficiency coursework for all DE teachers. Advocacy efforts include presentations/requests to the State School Chiefs Association, DOE, and Governor Markell. Tanisha Merced: The Legal and Social Justice Subcommittee had a lot of overlap in topic area in 2013 with the transportation committee, the housing committee and the driving privilege coalition. We tackled several important issues. These included driving privileges for undocumented individuals, the need for bi-lingual mental health screens and ensuring that agencies receiving Title VI funding complied with the Titles compliance LEP requirement. Charito Calvachi-Mateyko: The Community Subcommittee organized the Hispanic Heritage Month event at the schwartz Center for the Arts in Dover with the sponsorship of the Arsht-Cannon Fund. We are in charge of doing it again on Saturday, October 4, 2014. Please, mark this day in your calendar. The full-day event starts at 10 a.m. with a Health Fair. Lunch and dinner will be provided as well as entertainment and a very important panel on Latino issues with the participation of the community. Being the best of who we are, we ensure an amazing future for the next generations of Latinos.

Hispanicize 2014 Expande su Premio Positive Impact
Hispanicize 2014, el evento anual de tendencias para medios y blogueros Hispanos, busca expandir su programa de responsabilidad social al honrar a 20 latinos excepcionales con el Louis Pagan Positive Impact Award. En conmemoracin a Louis Pagan, cofundador de Hispanicize, estas personas sern reconocidas por haber dejado sus huellas de manera positiva en sus comunidades. George Urban Jibaro Torres fue el primer recipiente del premio en el 2013, debido a sus acciones a travs de las redes sociales, con las cuales ayuda a crear consciencia de diversas causas, sin esperar nada a cambio. Torres, quien fund la compaa Sofrito Media Group que produce un blog llamado Sofrito For Your Soul y un show de radio por internet llamado Radio Capic, mereci el premio por sus logros excepcionales en la industria de medios. Sofrito Media Group ha prestado sus servicios para ayudar crear consciencia acerca de los problemas que afectan a las comunidades latinas, como la iniciativa Por Tu Familia en Nueva York, para la Asociacin Americana de Diabetes. Adems del trabajo en su compaa, George ha tomado el papel de tutor de muchas otras organizaciones y ha participado en paneles y talleres educativos en varias universidades. Hispanicize 2014, the annual trends event for Latino trendsetters and newsmakers in social media, is expanding its social responsibility program to honor 20 exceptional Latinos with the Louis Pagan Positive Impact Award. In commemoration of Louis Pagan, cofounder of Hispanicize, these people will be recognized for having left their mark, positively impacting their communities.
George Urban Jibaro Torres was the first recipient of the award in 2013, honored for his efforts to create awareness of various causes through social media, without expecting anything in return. Torres, who founded Sofrito Media Group, which produces Do you know February is the blog Sofrito For Your Soul and an Internet radio show called Radio Capic, merited the award for his Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month? accomplishments in the media industry.

Using a kid-friendly storyline, Charlie & Kiwis Evolutionary Adventure follows a boy named Charlie as he works on a book report about kiwis, a flightless bird found in New Zealand. To understand how kiwis evolved, Charlie travels back in time to the age of the dinosaurs. Visitors will learn with Charlie by unraveling puzzles, playing games, exploring computer interactives, and observing live birds. The exhibition tackles the subject of evolution in a way that appeals to kids of all ages with drawings by Peter Reynolds, the award-winning illustrator of Judy Moody and other childrens books.
