Veteran Organization at SDSU.

On Wednesday, October 7th, the San Diego Armed Services YMCA will host 30 military and
military spouses at the University of San Diego for a full day of learning and fun to motivate them to
further their education at one of the great Universities in San Diego. This 4th Annual “Class” has gotten
permission from their commands all over San Diego to attend the day’s events, which include
participation in a Mock Trial at the Law school, mini-lessons by USD professors, one on one interaction
with student military groups from SDSU, the FBI, and ROTC program officials who can give insight
into their programs and give options for education during and after the military. There will also be a
special emphasis on scholarships and the new GI Bill, which is considered the most extensive
educational package ever offered, which includes the possibility of transferring your educational
benefits to your spouse and children.
Education is a major reason for enlisting in the military, but commitments to family, work and
deployments can make the thought of going back to school daunting. “But being on USD’s beautiful
campus, we can walk them through the sometime intimidating process of financial aid, age cut offs for
ROTC programs, and show them the support that the local Universities have to offer. For example,
there are over 600 veteran members currently at SDSU, and several military scholarships that go unused
at USD every year”, states ASYMCA PR and Development Director and USD Alum Brittany Catton.
At the end of the day, there are new friends, timelines, and connections that inspire some in the group
that start the admissions process immediately, because they can see where they would fit as well as the
value of all the military programs and scholarships they can take advantage of. Military can register to
attend this free event until October 5th at www.militaryymca.org > Calendar Events.
