Significant Music
Forward
The prospect of creating original music for Angelikas Promise coupled magnificent opportunity with unique challenge. Opportunity -- by way of uniting Art, Drama, Music, on stage to reenact the tragic, yet compelling story of early 20th Century Visual Artist Angelika Hoerle (1899-1923). Challenge -- in the knowledge that as Comet of Cologne Dada, there is no Dada Music per se; though several, mainly French Composers, Satie, Milhaud, Poulenc, Antheil, Honneger have stood out and been claimed via their association with members of Dadas Literary and Artistic Movement. Arguably, however, it is Angelikas family friend -noted Czech Pianist and Composer Erwin Schulhoff (1894-1942) who emerges as being the most Dada of all Composers. In contrast to the extraordinary experimental musical developments of Angelika Hoerles times, Comets & Shadows evolves from a single leitmotif (Angelikas Theme) to create a series of complimentary musical cell patterns; out of which additional Musical Cues are composed. Earlier, more accessible trends are recalled here --- giving way to less adventurous /more traditional techniques which general audiences have come to accept in association with musical underscoring as it relates to the Comprehensive Arts.

Text Painting: From the outset, ostinato half note value establishes a metronomelike pulse representing the Passage of Time.

Note: Original Death and the Maiden is a lied German song cyclecomposed by Schubert in 1817 for solo voice with piano accompaniment. The song is a setting of a text of the same title by German poet Matthias Claudius.

Additional Notes: Angelikas Theme now realized via two diverse musical dances: THE SHIMMY & SLOW TANGO are featured in this transitional cue; where chromaticism + play between semi-tones builds upon an expanded tonality feel.
