About Center of Gravity (COG)

You can assign weight to piping, pipe supports, equipment, and structure. Weights are included in the Spec, or set in the model using the Properties Palette or Data Manager. After you assign weight, you can then enable live COG, or take a COG snapshot. Pipe (tubing) weights are specified as linear weight (for example: or LBS/FT or KG/M). Units from a piping spec are converted to project units. For example, if the spec and catalog units are in LBS or LBS/FT they are converted to KG and KG/M in a metric project. Weights in the properties palette or Data Manager alway display in project units. To specify weight in non-project units, you can use the Spec Editor.

Live COG

You can display the COG and total weight of selected objects in the model. If all selected components have the same line number, COG and weight display in the properties palette for the entire Process Line.

COG Snapshots

You can add a COG snapshot glyph to the model. If you hover over the COG snapshot glyph, COG coordinate and weight displays in a rollover tooltip. You can select and delete a COG snapshot glyph, but you cannot move or edit the snapshot.

COG Reports
You can display the COG and total weight in a report.

You can create COG and Weight reports directly from the 3D model. Report Creator must be installed to create COG reports.

Live COG Validation

If live COG is enabled and you select a Plant object that does not have weight, a validation window displays to identify the components that are missing weight. Live COG validation is not enabled if no selected component has weight.

Plant objects are identified by tag in the validation window. An ID number (PnPID) is used if a tag is not set. You can enable and disable validation ( plantcogvalidationswitch ). Related Tasks

To set the COG in the 3D Model

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. In the Analysis Ribbon, click Edit COG. In the drawing area, select one Plant 3D object (piping, structure, or equipment). Enter e (Edit). Specify a new COG location Enter n to (End).

NoteYou can also enter COG in the properties palette.

To create a COG snapshot

Live COG does not need to be enabled to take COG Snapshot. 1. In the drawing area, select piping, structure, or equipment. For example, select the Connected Line Number. 2. In the Analysis Ribbon, click COG Snapshot. The COG glyph displays in the 3D model. 3. Hover over the COG snapshot glyph to display the rollover the tooltip.

If the COG glyph displays inside piping, you can set a wireframe or transparent visual style.

To set weight in the model

If you do not have weights specified in your piping spec, you can enter them in Data Manager or directly in the 3D model. 1. In the drawing area, select one or more Plant 3D objects (for example: an Elbow). 2. Right-click in the model. 3. In the shortcut menu, click Properties. 4. In the Properties palette Plant 3D group Weight box, enter a weight in project units (for example: 8.59).

NoteProject units are always LBS or KG for Weight, and LBS/FT or KG/M for Linear Weight depending on the project units. You do not specify units when you enter a weight value.

To set weight for piping in the model

1. 2. 3. 4. In the drawing area, select piping. Right-click in the model. In the shortcut menu, click Properties. In the Properties palette Plant 3D group weight (for example: 78.76).

Linear Weight, enter a linear

After setting linear weight (for piping and structure) weight is calculated from length. NoteYou can use the cui command to display Weight and Linear Weight for piping, pipe supports, equipment, and structure in the Quick Properties window.

To enable live COG validation

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. If live COG is not enabled, in the Analysis Ribbon, click Live COG. At the command prompt, enter plantcogvalidationswitch. Enter on. In the drawing area, select at least one plant object that does have weight set. Select at least one component that does not have weight set.

The COG Validation dialog displays. NoteYou can click on the links in the Validation window to zoom to and highlight the component that does not have weight set. If you want to freeze the list as you select components and set weights, you can disable live weight validation.

To disable live COG validation

Disabling live COG also disables validation. If you want to enable live COG but disable validation do the following: 1. At the command line, enter plantcogvalidationswitch. 2. Enter off. Disabling live weight validation does not close the COG Validation window. Related Tasks
