Part I: Grammar revision PRESENT SIMPLE Affirmative Form: The present simple is formed with the infinitive form of the verb. We add -s for the 3rd person singular: I work You work He / She / It works We work You work They work.

Mary and Ben work together for the new project. Jonathan decides to take an early flight in order to participate at the meeting. Negative Form: Negatives are formed with do / does not. In speech and informal writing we use contractions. Interrogative Form: The interrogatives are formed with the auxiliary verb do / does and the infinitive. Short questions to yes / no answers repeat the auxiliary. A: Do you work here?

B: Yes, I do. / No, I dont. Spelling: Verbs ending in consonant + Y -> change Y to I fly flies try - tries Verbs ending in vowel + Y -> do not change Y play - plays Verbs ending in -tch , -sh or -o get an -es watch watches go - goes

Present Simple use: a. for permanent facts. The machine cuts the metal. b. for actions and situations that are generally true. Liz works in the marketing department. c. for actions which are repeated, over a long period of time, for example habits and routines. Christopher flies to London every month. d. for action set by a time table or schedule. The train leaves at 14.30 a.m.

PRESENT CONTINUOUS: Affirmative form: The present continuous is formed with the auxiliary verb be and the -ing form of the main verb. I am working. You-We-They are working. He-She-It is working. Ann is reading a really interesting financial report. Negative Form: Negatives are formed with be+ not + -ing form. In speech and informal writing we use contractions.

I am not working. You-We-They are not working. He-She-It is not working. Our company is not going (isnt going to) to support this project. Interrogative Form: Questions are formed by inverting the subject and the auxiliary be. Short questions to yes / no answers repeat the auxiliary. Am I working? Are you-we-they working? Is he-she-it working? What are you writing now? Spelling: If the base verb ends in consonant + stressed vowel + consonant, double the last letter: Stop stopping Run running Begin beginning Note that this exception does not apply when the last syllable of the base verb is not stressed: Open opening if the base verb ends in ie, change the ie to y: lie- lying If the base verb ends in vowel + consonant + e, omit the e: Come coming Write writing

Present Continuous Use: a. to talk about temporary actions and situations that are happening now. I am working for our project now. b. the action or situation may be in progress now, at the moment of speaking. Sorry, Mr. Clark cant see you at the moment. He is talking to a customer.

c. to talk about activities happening in the near future, especially for planned future events. I am seeing with the chief of the Department tomorrow.

FREQUENCY ADVERBS Frequency adverbs usually occur in the middle of a sentence and have special positions, as shown in the following examples. a. Frequency adverbs usually come between the subject and the simple present verb (execpt main verb be). Karen always finishes her job on time. b. Frequency adverbs follow be in the simple present (am, is, are) Karen is always on time. c. In a question, frequency adverbs come directly after the subject. Do you always switch off you mobile phone during a meeting? d. In a negative sentence, most frequency adverbs come in front of a negative verb (except always and ever). Always follows a negative helping verb or negative be. Ann usually doesnt switch off her mobile phone during a meeting. She doesnt always accept change with a positive attitude. However, frequency adverbs may also occur at the beginning or end of a sentence. I sometimes start work at 8:30. Sometimss I start at 8:30. I start at 8:30 sometimes.
