Progress that is Impressive Ecological Advantages of the syngo X Workplace

The syngo X Workplace allows SW-based 3D reconstruction without the need for dedicated hardware, based on the already installed graphics adapter A standby mode can be used to save energy when the system is not in use Furthermore, the connected acquisition system can be used without the syngo X Workplace when no parallel processing and no 3D reconstruction are needed during the intervention All substances contained in the product and its packaging are documented Plastic parts are labeled for recycling Disassembly instructions for high-quality recycling are available Complete systems and their components can be taken back and refurbished Product take-back according to strict EU directives More than 90 % of the materials used can be returned to the flow of recyclable materials Environmental product declaration is available for download via internet

The syngo X Workplace Intelligent Postprocessing for X-ray Systems

The syngo X Workplace is a medical workstation for realtime viewing, image manipulation, 3D visualization, commu nication, and storage of medical images and data on exchange media. It is used for diagnostic image viewing and post processing during interventional procedures. The syngo X Workplace can be configured a stand-alone diagnostic review, post processing and reporting workstation. It can also be configured within a network to send and receive DICOM data. Furthermore, the syngo X Workplace can be combined with any system of the Artis zee family. In combination with an Artis zee or Artis zeego system, it provides image-guided solutions in the interventional room for: image-guided surgery using image fusion and navigation systems interventional cardiology interventional electrophysiology interventional oncology interventional radiology, and interventional neuroradiology

Environmental Product Design

Material supply: From natural resources to delivery of semi-finished products Production/delivery: From production of components to operation startup by the customer Use/maintenance: Includes daily use by our customers as well as maintenance End of life: From disassembly at the customer through material and energy recycling Siemens Healthcare considers environmental aspects in all phases of the product life cycle, including material supply, production/delivery, use/maintenance and end of life. Our product design procedure fulfills the requirements of IEC60601-1-9:2007 Environmental product design for medical electrical equipment. This standard supports the effort to improve the environmental performance of our products.

Reduction of Critical Substances and Energy Consumption

Siemens has made strides to reduce materials in our syngo X Workplace system that are environmentally harmful and are not easily recyclable. One example is the removal of an addition ally required reconstruction board that has been replaced by SW-based reconstruction using the graphics adapter already installed inside the system, which reduces the use of toxic materials and energy consumption. Moreover, standby mode can be used to save energy when the system is not in use. The syngo X Workplace is mainly built of metals. This provides a high degree of recyclability. Although Siemens has already eliminated a great amount of nonrecyclable materials, we are continually making improvements to reduce the environmental impact of Siemens products even more.

Cumulative Energy Demand

Energy consumption is the most im portant environmental characteristic of medical devices. This is why we use Cumulative Energy Demand to assess environmental performance. Cumulative Energy Demand is the total primary energy* that is necessary to produce, use and dispose of a device including all transportation. Our medical devices can be recycled almost completely for materials or energy. With appropriate handling at the end of a products service life, it is possible to return up to 1 MWh in the form of secondary raw materials or thermal energy to the economic cycle. 25 Primary Energy in MWh 17 15

Packaging
Our recording solutions are shipped in open packaging within Europe and to the USA. We use open packaging for more than 74 % of our shipments. The individual parts of a delivery need only be wrapped in dust-protective covers. In turn, they are loaded in a special trans port frame, which travels from the supp lier to the endcustomer and is then returned for reuse. We use closed packaging only for tropical countries or countries where the law so requires. The wooden crates or sealed packaging can then be used for material, or to some extent, thermal recycling. Values listed on the right represent average values from these two types of packaging. Total Weight Open packaging approx. 15 kg Closed packaging approx. 48 kg Paperboard 13 %

Product Take-Back
Most of the materials used to produce syngo X Workplace products are recyclable. 90 % of material (by weight) and 4 % of the energy value can be recycled. Our product disposal program ensures that we address the environmental aspects of our products even the end of the product life cycle. As part of this program, we refurbish systems and reuse components and replacement parts whenever possible through our Refurbished Systems business. We reuse components and subsystems for non-medical products. We also recycle for material or energy value. Disassembly instructions for disposal and recycling are available for our products.
* Primary energy is the energy contained in natural resources prior to undergoing any man-made conversions (e.g. oil, solar).
