AT&T PROVIDES $9,000 GRANT TO INSPIRING MINDS

Grant Will Support Education Nonprofits After-School Tech Center PROVIDENCE, R.I., February 18, 2014 AT&T* today announced its $9,000 grant to Providence-based educational nonprofit Inspiring Minds, to support the organizations Technology Center. Inspiring Minds Tech Center is an innovative, extended-day initiative designed to address the dropout crisis by exciting educationally underserved Providence public high school students in experiential learning that offers multiple pathways to social and academic success. This program site provides hands-on activities that help young learners to think critically, improve their grades, and acquire interest and enthusiasm for professional occupations and the skills necessary to attain rewarding careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). A highly skilled workforce doesnt just appear; it requires starting in the early years and seriously ramping up experiential learning opportunities for high school students, said Inspiring Minds Executive Director Terri Adelman. In the STEM fields, students need more than what schools can offer. I am so grateful that AT&T is committed to closing the skill gap. Its support will make it possible for us to offer our students the hands-onprojects that build STEM and workplace skills. Were committed to doing whatever we can to support STEM education, particularly for students in urban communities, said Patricia Jacobs, President, AT&T New England. Gaining STEM skills is increasingly important for students entering our 21st Century workforce, and were proud to support the remarkable work Inspiring Minds is doing to prepare Providence students for success. The Inspiring Minds Technology Center opened in 2001 in response to the huge technology gap being faced by urban students. The Tech Center is a safe, supportive after-school learning environment that quickly evolved to meet the critical need for students to get hands-on, project-based learning opportunities in STEM while also providing homework help, career awareness, and enriching school vacation workshops. Nearly every weekday throughout the school year, 30 high school students come to the center to participate in STEM activities, work with mentors, do research or use the computers. Demand for these services grows every year.

AT&T and the AT&T Foundation have given nearly $87 million to support STEM initiatives since 1995. Projects supported by AT&T contributions range from STEM scholarship programs and science/math focused summer camps for at-risk youth to hands-on technology labs and elite robotics competitions at the nation's leading universities. In addition to its overall funding of innovative STEM programs, AT&T remains focused on improving opportunities for STEM learning in K-12 education while helping at-risk youth prepare for work in the 21st century. Education has been AT&Ts priority for more than a century, and raising graduation rates is the focus of the companys signature philanthropic initiative, AT&T Aspire. Through Aspire, AT&T has committed to investing $350 million in education. Currently, about one in five students does not graduate high school with their peers. AT&T Aspire is focused on helping more students graduate from high school ready for college and careers. We are driven to help students succeed in school, in the workforce and in life.
