8 Situation 4
Sorry I havent written anything lately, but Ive been busy. Let me tell you what Ive been doing. My girlfriend showed me that I havent been good to the environment. Ive been wasting a lot of electricity and creating lots of garbage. With her help, Ive made very big changes. The first thing I did was organize a car pool. Two co-workers and I drove together so we only used one car. Then I took it one step further. Two months ago, I decided to sell my car and started riding my bicycle everywhere. For longer rides, I take the bus. Sometimes it is inconvenient, but most of the time, I love it. Also, I walk a lot. Its very healthy. I feel great! Ive made big changes in how I shop. These days I only buy things with little or no packaging. For instance, I used to buy packages of tomatoes from the supermarket. They were wrapped in plastic, on a plastic tray. Now I buy fresh tomatoes from the farmers market. They taste much better, and have no packaging. Also, they were grown nearby, so no gas was wasted to drive them to my city. My girlfried, Gina, explained how important it is to buy locally grown foods, and I agree with her. Of course, I bring my own bag to the market so I dont use many plastic bags. I bought a really cool bag that I can re-use and I bought one for Gina, too. Every time I change a light bulb at home, Ive replace it with an energy efficient light bulb. But they dont need changing so often because Ive started turning off the lights when I dont need them. My girlfriend and I sometimes prefer candlelight. Ive recycled paper, glass, and plastic for years, so Im still doing that. Its great because then there is less garbage. Ive gotten used to turning down the heat in winter. Ill try not to use the air conditioner so often in summer, but that will be difficult! Making changes at home is easy because I live alone. Ive also tried to make some changes at work. Thats been a little more difficult. Most people at the office like to recycle paper, if they have a place nearby to put it. I am trying to convince some of the people in my office to bring their own cups and plates instead of using disposable ones, but only a few people want to do that. Well, I cant change the whole world! Thats about it for today. Ill try to write soon about other changes Im making. But now its time to turn my computer off. I never leave it on all night anymore!

WHATS ON IN TOwN? The Tross Museum is proud of its latest exhibition which opened on Saturday. This amazing collection of sculptures and paintings has already been shown in museums all over Europe. All the works of art in the collection have been created locally by talented American artists from forty different states. The exhibition has been seen by thousands of art lovers and it has been written about in newspapers in Paris, London, and Florence. Famous art critic David Jones wrote, I havent been so impressed by an exhibition since the Modern Art Exhibition at the Tate Gallery six years ago! Dont miss the chance to see this amazing collection! The popular Fabrics Center on Main Street has recently been reopened by new owner Sara Leeds. Its definitely worth a visit. During an interview Leeds explained, Until a few years ago, most of our better wool and cotton had been grown and manufactured in Asia or Europe. Then more and more people began growing cotton locally. Because of this, the price of quality fabrics has been lowered considerably. As a matter of fact, before this change occurred, good wool had been sold for 30% more than todays price! Now we are able to sell all sorts of wonderful fabrics for cheaper prices!

Dear Mrs. Green, Here is our report of your husbands activities for today between 8:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Your husband left the house as usual at 8:30 a.m. At 9:00 a.m. your husband was seen entering Amore Italian Restaurant. He spoke with the manager and we think a bill was paid. At 9:40, your husband entered the florist shop. He picked up a bouquet which had already been prepared for him. Then he left the florists and went by taxi to The Manor Inn. He left 20 minutes later without the flowers. The receptionist says that a double room was booked in the name of Sam Green for this evening and that a gourmet dinner was ordered for 9 p.m. sharp. At 10:15 a.m. your husband walked into Lulus Lingerie. Silk pajamas were bought and paid for with a credit card. Your husband arrived at work at 10:45. He worked all day. At 5:45 he left work, got on the number 7 bus, and arrived home at 6:30 p.m. Best regards, Jim Jones

PARENTING IS SCARY! Im expecting a baby in July. Actually, to be honest, Im expecting two babies. I havent yet gotten used to the idea of having twins. I got used to not drinking any alcohol or coffee quite easily. I didnt use to drink a lot of alcohol or coffee anyway. Im even getting used to being hungry enough to eat a horse most of the time! But I havent gotten used to the idea of being a mother. I am really nervous and scared about the challenge. Although I used to do some babysitting when I was a teenager, I am not used to caring for two little babies at the same time. My husband says its very scary for him, too. He is not used to being around babies at all. He knows hell have to get used to waking up every few hours instead of sleeping like a log every night! He also knows hell have to get used to having both a son and a daughter at the same time! We both know this is a very big deal, but arent we supposed to feel happy and excited instead of nervous? Linda Everett (24, Northampton) The experts advice: Its totally natural for you and your husband to feel this way, especially with your first kids and with having twins. Dont worry! Every parent gets used to the change in routine and taking care of children. Dont be afraid to ask parents or family members for help in the beginning until you both get used to your new role as parents.
