Thecommonstragedycouldbealleviatedthroughseveralpotentialmechanisms.Raisingthepriceof parkingpermitswouldreducethenumberofpermitssold,resultinginfewerownersofthecommon resource.Studentswouldhaveastrongfinancialincentivetobuyapermitasagroupandcarpoolto campus.Avariationonthiswouldbetosellspecificpermitsfordifferentparkingstructures,makingthe moredesirablylocatedstructuresmoreexpensivetoparkin.Thenatureofthedecisionrights conferredbythepermitsmightalsobechangedinotherways.Forinstance,apermitmayonlyallowa studenttoparkoncampusfor4hoursduringtheday,oronlyoncertaindaysoftheweek,orcertain timesofday.Finally,theschedulingrightsoftheprofessorscouldbecurtailedaswell,andthe Universitycouldforcesomeprofessorstoscheduleclassesearlierinthemorningorlaterintheday. Alternatively,financialincentivescouldbeprovided,withprofessorsofferedsomeadditionalstipendfor voluntarilyschedulingcoursesoutsideoftheverypopularhours.
