Principals Column
Last week was certainly an exciting one, snow, ice and an earthquake! I do hope the inclement weather is behind us and we can look forward to warmer temperatures. Thank you to everyone for your patience and cooperation as we worked through the early release last week for snow. Things went as smoothly as could be expected. This week has been a busy one. Since we missed Valentines Day due to snow, students celebrated on Monday. Along with the valentines came a sea of cellophane! Thats right, the Silent Auction baskets are being dropped off. There will be some awesome baskets to bid on this Friday. I do hope you are planning to It will be a great time for the entire family. The fun begins at 5:30 and ends at 8:30. I look forward to seeing you there. After you have rested Saturday morning, I hope you will consider coming out the support the District 5 Dance Marathon being held at Spring Hill High School. Details can be found on page 5. You may have noticed that we have a new SC State flag. A big LMES thank you goes to Maj. & Mrs. Beau Spafford for providing our new flag. Actually, the flag is not new. This flag was flown over the statehouse and sent to Maj. Spafford when he was stationed in Kabul in 2009. It flew over Camp Phoenix then was keep in Maj. Spaffords office for the remainder of his deployment. Maj. Spafford is with the SC National Guard. I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Put on your dancing shoes and join us for the Dance Marathon on Saturday, February 22nd.

Safety Reminders..
Please remember that if you need to park in a handicapped parking space, you must have a handicapped license plate or a mirror hanger. It is unlawful to park in a handicapped spot without a parking permit. Please be aware that parking in a handicapped space without a parking permit is a $1,000 fine. fine When visiting the school, please park in a marked parking space and not along the curb. We must keep our fire lanes clear. A question has been raised regarding passing cars in the car line. Once the cones have been put in place, you are not to pass cars waiting to drop off students. Please do not remove the cones in order to pass other cars. If you cannot wait in the car line, please park and walk with your child at the crosswalk. This is for the safety of our students. Another safety issue concerns car rider drop off in the bus loop. Please follow the guidelines listed. 1 - Follow the line around the bus loop - drop off where the line stops. If first in line, pull all the way down to end of the bus loop near the 3rd grade portables. This helps keep the line moving. 2 -Do not break out of line and cut inside the orange cones - follow the line around to exit. 3 -Do not let children out on the driver's side - if someone does break out of line, your child may be in danger of being hit. 4 - Parents needing to enter the building must go through the front office and not through the bus loop doors. Thank you for helping to keep our students safe during arrival and dismissal times.

February is National Heart Month

Do you know how to keep your heart strong? The heart is a muscle and should be exercised to help keep it healthy and strong. To keep your heart healthy and strong you should be physically active for 30 minutes or more a day. A normal heart beats between 50 and 99 times per minute when you are resting. This heart rate gives a good indication of cardiovascular fitness. As you get in better shape your resting heart rate will go down because your heart is healthier. Regular physical activity not only strengthens your heart it also helps control your weight. Being overweight increases the risk of heart disease, raises blood cholesterol, and elevates blood pressure and risk of diabetes. It doesnt matter how you move, as long as youre physically active. Move until you breathe hard or break a sweat and you will be doing great things for your body and physical health. Being physically active improves your sleep and gives you a better attitude and extra energy boost during the day. Fueling your brain with physical activity before starting your homework can help improve your concentration and focus. Grab a friend and work out together, take a walk, jump rope, swim, play a team sport. Make stretching a part of pre and post workout sessions. It helps improve your balance which enhances coordination and athletic performance. By choosing to be healthy and making healthy choices you will feel better. So start making healthy choices today and be physically active. Visit the American Heart Association for more information and activities for kids http://www.heart.org.

We have a brand new South Carolina state flag!

Thank you to the SC National Guard for providing us with a new state flag. A special thank you to Major Beau Spafford for obtaining the flag. When Mrs. Spafford realized we didnt have a state flag, she got Major Spafford to arrange for our new flag. Our new flag has flown over the SC Statehouse then was sent to Major Spafford when he was deployed to Kabul, where it was flown over Camp Phoenix then kept in Major Spaffords office for the remainder of his deployment. We are honored to have this special flag flying at LMES.

Gracias a las familias de LMES!

Once again, thanks to all our LMES families for making our annual mercado a success. Our students (and parent volunteers!) had fun practicing their Spanish while bargaining to make purchases with the pesos they earn in Spanish class. Also, due to your very generous donations of gently used AND new toys, our students are helping children right here in our community through GOoDworks. These donations are being made in memory of Sue Madden, former director of GOoDworks and a very special friend to LMES. We are so fortunate to have our families saving kids meal toys and other stuff for us on an ongoing basis. We are always collecting, so feel free to send items with your children or drop them off in the office. We regret when we dont get to thank you personally for these items, but please know how much they are appreciated! Our next event will be La fiesta the week of May 19 23rd. Stay tuned for information regarding requests for volunteer help and snack donations for la cantina! Thanks again LMES families rock! Seoras Gonzlez & Fultz

February is National Childrens Dental Health Month
Developing good habits at an early age along with scheduling routine dental visits will help your children get a good start on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums. Here are some tips on helping reduce your childrens risk of tooth decay: - Sugary foods and drinks should only be consumed with meals although its best to avoid them all together. Saliva production increases during meals and helps neutralize acid production and rinse food particles from the mouth. - Limit between-meal snacks. If kids crave a snack, offer them nutritious foods such as vegetables, fruits and cheese. - If your kids chew gum, make it sugarless Chewing sugarless gum after eating can increase saliva flow and help wash out food and decay-producing acid. - Monitor beverage consumption children should choose water and low-fat milk; avoid soft drinks and sugary juices. - Help your children develop good brushing and flossing habits. It only takes 2 minutes to properly brush your teeth using short gentle stroke and paying close attention to the gum line areas around fillings and hard to reach areas such as the back teeth. Dont forget to floss. - Schedule regular dental visits every 6 months. Visit the American Dental Association at http://www.ada.org for more information and fun activity sheets for kids.
