Based on the techniques for presenting vocabulary that you have learned in this unit, answer the following

questions for the vocabulary below. We provided you with an example to get you started. a) How would you explain the word? b) How would you check to ensure that your students understood the meaning? Remember that you have a wide range of techniques. Choose those that are most appropriate. Make the explanation clear to your students. Example: Woman

Ra) How would you explain the word? A: Use pictures of different women; show them one by one, then contrast them with a picture of a man. To explain the plural form put all the pictures together and say women, then ask the students to repeat. T: woman Ss: woman T: women Ss: women b) How would you check to ensure that your students understood the meaning? A: Say names of famous people. Then ask, Is she a woman or is he a man?. T: Jennifer Lopez Ss: woman T: Tom Cruise Ss: man Magazine (noun) a) How would you explain the word? Opt A: Bring a magazine to class and compare with a book. Show both items and make sure students understand. Opt B: write the word magazine and book on the board and write names of popular magazines below them. Examples for magazines: (TV y Novelas, People, Forbes, etc.). Examples of popular books: (Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, the Bible, etc.) b) How would you check to ensure that your students understood the meaning? Play a game:

Building (noun) a) How would you explain the word? Opt A: Draw a picture of a house and a building on the board. Opt B: Write the words building and house below the picture of the building write names of important buildings in the world or the students country. Ex the Empire State building in the USA, Torre Latinoamericana in Mexico City, the Riu Hotel in Guadalajara city, etc. b) How would you check to ensure that your students understood the meaning? Concept Checking Technique: T: Mario, what is your favorite building in this city (where student lives) Mario: theGrand Tower T: Lia: whats your favorite building in this city? Lia: the Holiday Inn T: what is your favorite building in the world? SS: the Chrysler building in New York, the Wynn hotel in Las Vegas, etc.

Proud (adjective) a) How would you explain the word? Because of the difficulty of it, I would use one (or two) of the following techniques: Opt 1. Give or ask for examples: a. Draw a picture of a child receiving a diploma. Next to him/her draw also the parents with their head up. Showing they feel proud of the child.

Opt 2. Matching synonyms and antonyms Opt 3. Present words in context using synonyms, play a video or conversation b) How would you check to ensure that your students understood the meaning? Ask them to share an experience when their parents felt proud of them, maybe when they graduated or received a diploma Lose (the opposite of win, as in a competition) a) How would you explainthe word? Opt A: Draw a race-like situation on the board with a winner up front. Point out win = first person and lose = the person in the end. Opt B: Talk about a beauty contest or a soccer tournament and express who won and who lost. b) How would you check to ensure that your students understood the meaning? Ask students to tell personal experiences where they lost something and on the contrary a situation where they won. Also by having students tell you about their favorite soccer, basketball, tennis teams and tell you the times they lost a game and they felt sad. Lie (something said which is not true) a) How would you explain the word? Opt A: Play situations: Tell students: "I am rich and I have a lot of money" (show a few coins) Tell students: "I am a famous Hollywood star!" Opt B: Use synonyms in a match exercise. Incorrect = false Correct = true Lie = not true b) How would you check to ensure that your students understood the meaning? Opt A: Invite students to share an experience when they had to lie or when someone lied to them. Opt B: Concept Checking Technique:

Ask students to tell the class two short statements about themselves. One should be true and the other a lie (false).
