Aim of Finlands transport policy


The aim of transport policy is an intelligent and sustainable transportation system that properly addresses all economical, ecological, social and cultural considerations. A reliable, high-quality transport infrastructure is seen as essential for ensuring that society can operate on a basis that is efficient, regionally and socially equitable and internationally competitive.

Environmental programmes of the Ministry of Transport and Communications

The Ministry of Transport and Communications of Finland has done systematic environmental work for almost 20 years. major environmental issues for which additional measures are needed long-term goals and targets for 2010 key measures and actors effectiveness indicators

Environmental programmes for the administrative sector

The Ministry is preparing an environmental strategy as part of its own strategy The environmental strategy sets targets for the entire administrative sector, and outlines the measures The strategy is complemented by environmental programmes prepared by government agencies The basic idea is to constantly improve environmental work, as stated in the ISO 14001 standard

The growth of passenger traffic volumes in

urban areas should be directed to more environmentally friendly transport modes. Walking and cycling should be made safe and attractive alternatives to motorised transport with good urban planning. Urban traffic can also be reduced by way of efficient public transport.

CO2 based taxation


Finland has car and vehicle taxes that are
based on carbon emissions. The base tax for cars and vans is based on carbon emission data that is provided by the manufacturer. The carbon tax has clearly resulted in consumers buying more energy efficient vehicles.
