Introduction

This Research design is focused on designing a new Local Area

Network. A network is a cluster of computers, with one computers

acting as a server to provide network services such as file transfer,

e-mail, and document printing to client computers of that network.

Using gateways, switch/hubs and routers local area network (LAN)

can be implementing. It is a computer network covering a small

geographic area, like a home, office, or groups of building like a

school. The defining characteristics of LANs, in contrast to wide area

networks (WANs), include their much higher data-transfer rates,

smaller geographic range, and lack of a need for leased

telecommunication lines.

LANs allow direct communication and sharing of peripheral

resources such as file servers, printers, scanners, and network

modems. They use a variety of proprietary technologies, most

commonly LocalTalk, Ethernet, 3CoM, and TokenRing, to perform

the connections.

The purpose of this designing Local Area Network (LAN) is to

improve several existing LAN designs and help group of users of

computer to access, share and transfers information with their co-

group. I am glad to share my knowledge and ideas with you and

hope my design will help you a lot.

Background of the Study

The continuous innovation of our technology gave a

remarkable to the improvement of our communication. Local Area

Network is one of the bases of the continuous improvement of

communication. LANs allow direct communication and sharing of

peripheral resources such as file servers, printers, scanners and

network modems. And through the designs of different topologies it

makes the networking more efficient and reliable to all users.

It seemed that local Area Network was one of main needs of a

company to attain their goal, mission and vision. Sea Sunshine

Shipping Incorporated is one of the competitive agencies here in our

country. As company works for their client they need a good

communication internationally and local. Especially the private

documents of their client are the most important. In the near future

with their kind of business they really need the support of

technology especially in communication terms.

SSSI has their current local area network but they encountered

several problems with regards to their network. The design was

established since year 2000. They used Mesh Technology, router,

switch (8 & 24 ports) and they used file server. But they don’t have

their own server they just only rent at the other company. They

used wireless LAN for laptops.

Disseminating this information in this research design, these

measurements could be related on continuous basis to enhance the

accuracy of their network. With such new improved Data

Communication Equipment Like server, router, switching hub, and

specific topology the “Bus Topology”.

A server (IBM x3200) is a common dedicated to provide one or

more service over computer network, typically through a request-

response routine. This design used file server in which a computer

attached to a network that has the primary purpose of providing a

location for the shared storage of computers files (such as

documents, sound files, photographs, movies, images, database,

etc. ) and Email Server to provide email services that can be

accessed by the workstations.

The design consist a switching hub which is a special type of

hub that forwards packets to the appropriate port based on the

packet’s address. Conventional hub simply rebroadcast every

packet to every port. Since switching hubs forward each packet only

to required port, they provide much better performance. Most

switching hubs also support load balancing, so that ports are

dynamically reassigned to different LAN segments based on the

traffic patterns. Some newer switching hubs support both

traditional Ethernet (10 Mbps) and Fast Ethernet (100 Mbps) ports.

This enables the administrator to establish a dedicated, Fast

Ethernet channel for high-traffic devices such as servers. I

preferably use category 5 Unshielded Twisted Pair also for fast and

accurate communication could be enhance.

Significance of the Study

The purpose of this Local Area Network (LAN) design is to

upgrade the current installed in Sea Sunshine Shipping Inc. (SSSI)

and help them to solve their problems with regards to their

network. In my proposed LAN Design the ideas and principles of bus

topology one of the basic network topologies with accordance to the

server-based network. Servers are generally higher performance

systems optimized to provide network services to other computers.

The Advantages of the proposed LAN design using server-

based network and bus topology can be summarized as follows with

accordance to its installation and operation:

• Easy to install and wire.

• Affordable requires, less cable length than a mesh topology.

• Easy to connect a computer or peripherals to a linear bus.

• Security and virus protection.

• Simplicity, use a single cable the backbone functions as a

shared communication medium that devices attach or tap into

with an interface connection.

Statement of the Problem

This research design tries to solve several problems

encountered by Sea Sunshine Shipping Inc.

1. Absence of Virus protection.

2. Data loss and delay a messages.

3. High noise level and intermittent flow of signals while

connecting to the internet.

4. Mess place cause by cable wires.

Objectives

This Research design aims the following:

1. To improve communications status in the said company for

their success.

2. To derive the stability criteria of the method of LAN.

3. To be able to prevent data loss and delay of messages.

Scope and Delimitation

This proposed Local Area Network (LAN) design covered a

small geographic area, like a home, office, office, or groups of

buildings e.g. a school.

Design preferred to use server-based environment

because the number of computer is more than fifteen. In a server

based network, there are computers set up to be primary providers

of services are called servers and the computers that request and

use the service are called client computers.

This design advised to use bus linear topology. Bus Linear

Topology is the most basic in computer network topologies. In its

simplest form, a bus linear topology consists of a switch, hub or

computer which acts as passageways to transmit messages. Bus

Networks use a common backbone to connect all devices. A single

cable the backbone functions as a shared communication medium

that devices attach or tap into with an interface connector.

Conceptual Frameworks

This design was done by several steps/procedures As follows.

Hypothesis

Regarding to the problems encountered by the chosen

company, knowing of the root cause of the problem researcher can

scrutinize the situation. Redesign of current Local Area Network will

become a big help in resolving problems. Through the use of

possible and new improved data communication equipment those

sighted problems will be a best solution for a network designer to

do.
