Sri Lanka to launch two year tourism promotion campaign Sri Lanka will launch a "comprehensive mega tourism promotional campaign" to boost arrivals including from newly developing markets, starting this year, information minister Keheliya Rambukwelle said. Sri Lanka's Tourism Promotion Bureau is to spend up to 12.5 million US dollars on promotions over two year starting from 2014. Sri Lanka's top leisure firms have been calling for a country promotion campaign for several years to compete with similar campaigns by competitors in Asia but the call has been ignored by authorities so far. [Source: www.lbo.lk] Rupee ends at 2-month low The Sri Lankan rupee ended at its lowest in more than two months on Thursday due to importer dollar demand, dealers said, breaching a key barrier that the central bank had been defending since early December. The market expects slight depreciation in the local currency in the near future due to rising seasonal importer demand for dollars. The rupee is usually under pressure in March and early April due to seasonal imports ahead of the traditional new year in mid-April. [Source: www.ft.lk] Secondary bond market continues to be active Secondary bond market trades continued its active momentum with the two liquid 2018 maturities (i.e. 15 August 2018 and 1 April 2018) declining by eight basis points each to one month lows of 8.80% and 8.90% respectively. However, selling interest at these levels restricted any further decline in yields as activity dried up towards the later part of the day. A limited amount of activity was also witnessed on the 1 January 2017, 15 July 2017 and 1 July 2019 as well, at levels of 7.80% to 7.90%, 8.45% to 8.60%, and 9.05% to 9.10%. [Source: www.ft.lk] Inland Revenue's collection up by 16% in 2013 The Inland Revenue Department of Sri Lanka has recorded 16% increase in its total revenue collection in 2013 compared to last couple of years. This was revealed at the Inland Revenue Assessors' Association at its annual general meeting held in Colombo recently. Though the main objectives were not achievable easily this past year the commitment of the association has brought them closer to the mark in quick succession. [Source: www.dailynews.lk]

Global
U.K. Retail Sales Fall More Than Forecast on Clothes, Food U.K. retail sales fell more than economists forecast in January, led by a drop in demand at food and clothing stores. Sales including fuel plunged 1.5 percent from December, when they surged 2.5 percent, the Office for National Statistics said today in London. The drop, the biggest since April 2012, exceeded the 1 percent median forecast of 19 economists in a Bloomberg News survey. [Source: www.bloomberg.com] Japan Record Trade Gap Shows Risk of Abenomics Losing Steam Japans record trade deficit adds to sinking consumer confidence and an April sales-tax increase, threatening to undermine Prime Minister Shinzo Abes bid to engineer a sustained recovery. Credit Suisse Group AG yesterday cut its 2014 economic growth forecast for Japan to 1.6 percent from 2.2 percent, as the government reported a 2.79 trillion yen ($27.3 billion) trade shortfall for January. The full-year deficit for 2013 was an unprecedented 11.5 trillion yen. [Source: www.bloomberg.com]
