Topic No. 1: COPING STRATEGIES, SCIENTIFIC ABILITY AND PHYSICS ACHIEVEMENT OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS Background/Rationale Academic achievement is the outcome of education, in Philippine educational institutions, academic success is measured by how well students meet standards set. And this academic achievement depends on many factors and their interplays with each other have been a subject of many researches in a lot of learning areas. Physics as a Science subject is considered difficult by students since it makes an immense demand on their learning. For Physics education to be effective the acquisition of the right scientific skills and values should be considered in the teaching learning process. Students in high school are adolescent undergoing changes in their life, addressing this conflicts and meeting the demands of studying can put a toll on many students academic achievement thats why theres a need for the effective of use of coping strategies. Coping can be described as the cognitive and behavioral efforts an individual uses to manage specific demands(Lazarus and Folkmans, 1984). Tobin, Holroyd, Reynolds and Wigal(1989) categorized coping strategies as problem solving , Cognitive Restructuring, Express emotions , social Support , Problem avoidance, Wishful Thinking , Self criticism and Social withdrawal.

Scientific abilities are processes and procedures that science students need to solve and analyze problems critically which are important in achieving success in Physics learning. This study aims to find out the scientific abilities and coping strategies of students and the potential link of these factors to physics achievement, this study will help assess the skills and strategies used by students and guide teachers in improving them to achieve a better learning process. Research Questions This study will try to answer the following questions 1. What are the coping strategies employed by students in studying physics? 2. What are the students scientific ability? 3. What is the Physics achievement of the students? 4. Is there a difference in the students coping strategies? 5. Are coping strategies related to scientific ability and physics achievement? Methodology The study will use a descriptive correlational model. The respondents are Fourth Year High School students. The research instruments that will be used are Coping Strategies Inventory by Tobin, NCAE Result to determine students - Scientific Ability and Physics grades as Physics achievement indicator.

Descriptive statistics on relevant data will be used, ANOVA to find the difference in students Coping strategies and Pearson R for correlational data to be evaluated at .05 level of significance.
