BASIC ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Day 1:

Relationships of the basic electrical quantities

Out line:
Resistance, capacitance, magnetic flux, inductance, frequency Reactance, impedance, active power, reactive power, apparent Power, power factor Identify the unit of measurement of electrical quantities; Explain relationship between electrical quantities; Describe how excessive moisture and temperature can affect the Insulation resistance of materials used

Competencies:

Day 2 : Active,Reactive,Apperent power and Power factor Outline: Active or Real Power The average active power is defined as resistance of power circuit or simply resistor, consumes ohmic energy. While electric current flows through a resistor there will not be any phase difference between the voltage and current, that means electric current and voltage are in same phase the phase angle between them is zero. If I current flows through an electrical resistance R for t seconds then total energy consumed by the resistor is I2.R.t. This power is known as active power Reactive Power For AC systems voltage and current pulsate at the system frequency. Although AC voltage and current pulsate at same frequency, they peak at different time power is the algebraic product of voltage and current. Real power is the average of power over cycle and measured by volt-amperes or watt. The portion of power with zero average value called reactive power measured in volt-amperes reactive or vars.

Apparent Power Apparent power is a measure of alternating current (AC) power that is computed by multiplying the root-mean-square current by the root-mean-square voltage. In a direct current (DC) circuit, or in an AC circuit whose impedance is a pure resistance, the voltage and current are in phase.

Power Factor Power factor is defined as the ratio of real power to apperent powerThis definition is often mathematically represented as kW/KVA, where the numerator is the active (real) power and the denominator is the (active+ reactive) or apparent power Power factor = Real Power/Apparent Power = Watts/ Volt Amps Competencies:

Day 3: Basic Conduit Technology

Out line Electrical conduit is metal or plastic pipe through which electrical wires are run. This conduit protects the wires and is usually used in exposed locations, such as along the outer surface of a wall. Metal conduit acts in place of the green grounding wire that is found in Romex (thus the reason why only metal boxes may be used with metal conduit). However, many electricians still like to run the green grounding wire through metal conduit as an extra-safe means of grounding the system. Competencies:

Day 4: Installation of Lighting Outline: Lightning is a natural phenomenon caused by separation of electrical positive an Negative charges by atmospheric processes. When the separated charge gets very large, the air between the positive and negative regions breaks down in a giant spark (an intra-cloud stroke), or a charged region breaks down to ground. And compare the effects of dimmers on resistances type and discharge type lighting. Competencies:
