Establishing links between seismic responses and rock properties

THE BENEFITS OF ROCK PHYSICS

Rock physics analysis is essential for optimizing the value of seismic reservoir characterization results and
enabling advanced quantitative interpretation. The ability to relate rock properties to seismic responses using
a calibrated model is invaluable for enhancing the understanding of the reservoir.
Rock physics establishes relationships between the physical rock properties and seismic expressions, such
as velocity, density, and attenuation. The discipline accounts for the solid rock frame (mineralogy, porosity,
and pore shape and size), pore fluid (fluid type and saturation), pressure, and temperature.
Applying rock physics theory can form an integral part of multidisciplined drilling solutions that include pore
pressure prediction, shale anisotropy characterization, and improved wellbore stability modeling.
Rock physics analysis can be used for well log
conditioning, reservoir evaluation, rock physics modeling,
seismic calibration, time-lapse analysis, and providing
drilling solutions. By establishing relationships between
physical rock properties and seismic expressions, the
value of seismic data can optimized.
