Communications for life

Applications

The system integrates external crew by a reliable wireless connection to the aircraft intercom system. It provides mission critical communication, increased situational awareness, more effective operations and increases safety.

Main areas of use:

Search and Rescue (SAR) Emergency Medical Services (EMS)

Polycon allows EMS and SAR crews to stay connected during all phases of the rescue

Other areas of use:

Sling load operations Helicopter crane operations Loadmasters Law enforcement/air-borne SWAT Border Patrol Helicopter assisted boarding of harbor pilots Pre-Flight check Mechanics working with running engines Helideck/flight deck operations On / Offloading of personnel

Polycon is taking SAR operations into the 21st century. Evolving from hand signals to direct speech is like moving from night to day. (British Royal Air Force SAR Squadron)

Of all the various equipment we have installed in our helicopters the past 10 years, Polycon is by far the most significant operational improvement (CHC North Sea)

Polycon provides reliable wireless intercom in or outside the aircraft.

Polycon by Axnes
The Polycon System consist of a Base Station and a number of radio transceivers. Accessories include chargers, aircraft antennas, adaptors, helmets, headsets and mikes. Increased safety by drastically improving situational awareness. Increased operational accuracy through constant participation in onboard communication by all crew. Increased aircraft safety via direct communication on clearances to obstructions or other possible dangers reported by external crew. Acoustic valve mode provides safe communication to casualties or other staff without removal of helmet/headset. Dual band option includes additional maritime VHF which allows for direct communication between rescue swimmer and shipping or other response groups in addition to the aircraft. Custom frequency allocations in both VHF and UHF bands allow for tailoring to users requirements.

Polycon features:
Radio transceivers are waterproof and ruggedized, and purpose built to be operated by SAR and EMS teams in harsh conditions. Unique patented VOX enable hands free communication when on the hoist. Polycon also supports pushto-talk mode, casualty communication mode and off helmet walkie-talkie mode. Customizable frequency and channel allocation provide support for multiple aircraft or multiple external crew.

A dual band handheld radio with Maritime VHF channels will give the operator the advantage of combining two radios in one, reducing the number of radios external crew members need to carry and thus increase safety and comfort through reduced complexity and weight.

The Polycon System

Certification
The aircraft mounted Base Station is qualified to RTCA DO-160D, with STCs established for the most popular SAR and EMS Helicopters.

No Helmet Removal
The patented high noise resistant noInterrupt Voice Operated Transmission and Acoustic valve modes remove the need to take off helmet on scene.

Unique Antenna
The unique patented antenna provides outstanding performance. Communication is tested to 16 Nm/ 18 miles/30 km in favorable conditions. Over water reliable ranges of 10 Nm/11 miles/18 km line of sight can be expected when the aircraft has a permanently installed belly mounted antenna.

Operational modes
The system provides four operational modes: When Attached to a helmet/headset, No-Interrupt Voice Operated Transmission (NIVOX) or Push to Talk (PTT). Casualty communication/Acoustic valve mode provides safe private communication to casualties without removing helmet or headset. Disconnected from the helmet/ headset, the transceiver operates in walkie-talkie mode with its built in speaker and microphone. For Dual band units all modes are available when using VHF or UHF bands.

Ruggedized
The Polycon chassis is milled from one piece of sea water resistant aluminum alloy. Silicone seals are glued for reliable waterproofing and a valve system compensates for changes in cabin pressure due to altitude. The company offers a 2 year limited warranty* period extendable up to 10 years when participating in our maintenance program. User maintenance is limited to battery charging and rinsing transceivers under the tap after exposing to seawater.
* Warranty limitations are misuse, including - damage caused by sharp objects or brute force strong enough to penetrate the housing, breaking off or removing antenna, terminals and display window, or water ingression due to operating the pressure equalization system while unit is wet.

Waterproof Transceiver
The mobile transceiver is waterproof to IP 67 standards or a depth of 3 feet while operating and is built for repeated exposure to seawater.

Background
The Polycon products are developed in close cooperation with professional SAR and EMS teams. Polycon is developed by professionals, for professionals and its superior performance and unique patented features are unmatched. The Polycon story started in 1998 when CHC in Norway defined the need for a device. Polycon was developed in cooperation between CHC Norway and UK RAF SAR Operations. The first systems were delivered to CHC and RAF in 2001 and they have become an integral part of these organizations operations. Polycon is standard or optional equipment for SAR equipped helicopters from Eurocopter, Agusta Westland and Sikorsky.
