Grade Subject: Geometry (Second Semester)

UNIT CALENDAR: Day 1: Radical Review Day 2: Geometric Mean Day 3: Pythagorean Theorem Day 4: Special Right Triangles (45-45-90) Day 5: Special Right Triangles (30-60-90) Day 6: Activity with Special Right Triangles Day 7: SOH-CAH-TOA Day 8: SOH-CAH-TOA Day 9: Angle of Elevation/ Depression Day 10: TEST DAY

Big Ideas: Use the core principles for right triangles in their higher level mathematics course including: SOH-CAH-TOA, Pythagorean Theorem, Angle of Elevation and Angle of Depression, and Special Right Triangles. Apply these formulas to real world examples of right triangles using trigonometry and trigonometric ratios. Connect these right triangles and angles of elevation/ depression to ones found in nature.

Essential Questions: - What are right triangles and how can I find missing side lengths and angles on them? - Where are right triangles found in nature? - What do the angles and sides on a triangle mean? - What is a Pythagorean triple? - Where are angles of elevation found in nature? - Where are angles of depression found in nature? Students will know: How to find a missing side length with the Pythagorean Theorem How to find missing angles and missing side lengths using trigonometry How to find the perimeter of a triangle using the Pythagorean Theorem Students will understand: What special right triangles are and how to use them to find missing sides and angles What an angle of depression and angle of elevation in the real world What a right triangle is made up of What the sides of a right triangle mean What Pythagorean triple is What a right triangle looks like on a coordinate plane Students will be able to do: A variety of practice problems, worksheets, and in class activities to find the sides and angles of right triangles, angles of depression and elevation, and trigonometry. Group work in order to use their peers to further their knowledge on right triangles. Research-Based Instructional Strategies: This unit includes real world applications, which helps to make the students more engaged in the classroom. This unit incorporates diversity in order to make all of the students feel comfortable in the classroom.

Day 1

Topic Radical Review

Lesson Overview We will review what radicals are and go over how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide radicals. We will understand what geometric mean is and what it is used for. We will also see the how it is different from arithmetic mean. We will also see how to find missing sides on right triangles using ratios. We will read a childrens book about the Pythagorean Theorem. We will directly learn what the Pythagorean Theorem and its converse are. We will go over examples of how to use the Pythagorean Thoerem and its converse. We will have an inquiry based lesson that lets the students discover what the two kinds of special right triangles are and how their sides are related. The students will confirm what they discovered on the previous day about special right triangles. They will also use the Pythaogrean Theorem and special right triangles to find perimeter. This is a quiz day and a day to finish the homework assigned as well as homework that is missing. We will introduce what trigonometry is and what sine, cosine, and tangent are. The students will do few examples using these.

CCSS.Math.Content.HSGSRT.C.6. Understand that by similarity, side ratios in right triangles are properties of the angles in

the triangle, leading to definitions of trigonometric ratios for acute angles. CCSS.Math.Content.HSGSRT.C.8. Use trigonometric ratios and the Pythagorean Theorem to solve right triangles in applied problems. CCSS.Math.Content.HSGSRT.C.8. TEST DAY

The students will use their calculator to find exact answers to their trigonometric ratios. The students will go over what inverse trigonometry is as well. The students will read through story problems and draw them out. Then solve for the missing side or angle. Then they will have create their own scenario of an angle of depression. This is the end of the unit test day which will take up the whole hour.

Materials/ Resources/ Websites: Content standards and some ideas for this lesson where obtained from the Common Core website: http://www.corestandards.org/Math/Content/G My field placement teacher let me use some of her notes and assignment sheet for the Pythaogrean theorem http://www.jamesrahn.com/geometry/pages/special_right_triangles.htm I used two of these worksheets as references but I made my own. My worksheets I feel are less confusing and more student-friendly. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlJHJEE-QVQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRz2d5yedsg http://www.wccusd.net/cms/lib03/CA01001466/Centricity/domain/60/lessons/g eometry%20lessons/IntroToTrigFunctionsV3.pdf This activity was very good on its own so I wanted to use it as a warmup in my class. http://www.algebralab.org/img/f16a034a-c130-438c-a033-982b5214a675.gif http://images.tutorvista.com/cms/images/67/angle-of-depression.png http://www.classzone.com/books/geometry/lessonquiz_national.cfm Multiple Assessments and Rubrics: At the end of the unit, there will be a unit test that will be the summative assessment aspect of this unit. Admit slips and exit slips will be used to check for the understanding of students as well as getting to know them through the different types of questions I ask. This will be formative assessment for the unit. The only rubric is used for an angle of depression activity.
