STRUCTURE OF A POEM
Stanza
A group of lines in a poem. A stanza is similar to the paragraph.
The Line
A line of poetry is not like a sentence. Just because the words are one line, it doesnt
mean that the complete thought is finished. When reading poetry, and you reach the
end of the line and there is no punctuation after the last word, do not pause
continue reading as you would any sentence.
Enjambment / Run-on lines
When the idea or phrase in a poem is carried over from one line into the next. The
effect of enjambment is to create free-flowing speech. Eg: You bought for me/Big
Uniforms/A size too soon/ and until then /I look cartoon.

6. Look at the last stanza. How does it echo or parallel what was in the first stanza
and how is it different?
