LETTER
from the team

A season for renewal

Can you sense it? The rays of the sun when its not busy hiding behind the clouds feel just a little warmer. The days are growing just a little longer. And the trees and other plants that slept through the winter now possess a nearly tangible energy: they, like us, are ready for a new growing season. Yes, friends, spring is on its way. And what is spring known best as, if not a time for renewal? During the winter, our well-being and personal growth all too often take a back seat to what seem to be more pressing matters. Not only do we have Wisconsins cold, ice and wind to contend with, we each have our own work, social, family and other responsibilities. When juggling these concerns, its easy to forget the difference between living life and surviving it. This spring, truly live your life. As you take in the smell of rain showers and the sight of budding flowers, devote time to focus on your own renewal. Laugh more. Learn more. Love more both others and yourself. Be inspired by the rebirth you see in the world around you. Natures Pathways is here to help you along your journey. We see ourselves as a partner in your quest to live as the best possible version of yourself. In the following pages, our many talented authors provide information designed to help you focus on renewal and healthy living. Looking to make fitness a bigger priority? Check out Courtney Fryatts article, Making exercise a habit. Want to make sure youre providing proper care to your fourlegged friends? Take a look at Something to chew on, by Jodie Gruenstern, and Do horses need bodywork and chiropractic care

in the winter? by Amber Erickson. Our other articles will give you useful information on reiki, emotional healing, chiropractic care, personal and professional development, and more! So as you enjoy the beginnings of spring, please let the writings of our expert authors guide you through your own renewal, and remember: youre never alone on your path to well-being. Yours in health, Your Natures Pathways team

Dreams and emotions: Discovering your healing symbols

By Richard Hanhardt MS, MBA, BCSLC

hroughout history we have wondered about our dreams. We have found them to be anywhere from nonsense to life-changing or profoundly healing. Other cultures found them to be the key to how people would live. Some island cultures in the South Pacific labeled the dreams of individuals to be big dreams and small dreams. The big dreams belonged to the entire tribe and the small dreams belonged to the individual. These cultures found ways to live in complete peace with each other because of their dream-sharing times and the intense openness and closeness these times brought. We have been taught that our dreams should not have any meaningful role in our lives, since they cannot be conformed to science or controlled in a laboratory. And yet those who challenge this belief have in store richness and inner healing exploration that cannot be found in any other way. The leader of making our dreams understandable and seeing the profound manner in which they work in the healing psyche was Carl Jung. Sigmund Freud also looked into dreams, but took too shallow a look and saw only sexuality (the repressed sexuality of the Elizabethan age). Jung looked as deeply as humanly possible and found the intensely religious symbolic experiences of all mankind, which he labeled archetypes. And here is what he found about the archetypes: In all cultures, they are now and have always been emotionally healing. But how does this work? Certainly most of us do not have the experience of healing from the memory of our dreams and perhaps many readers have learned to silence this inner voice and have reached a point of almost never remembering dreams. Here are some considerations for making the dream experience work for you.

Natures Pathways | March 2014

1. LEARN TO REMEMBER YOUR DREAMS. This means simply

telling yourself that you will remember them at night and leaving a pen and paper next to your bed to write notes. During the night, leave only a few notes that will cause you to remember the whole dream in the morning. 2. LOOK FOR SYMBOLIC CONTENT. Often dreams will carry symbols, which you are not likely to understand at first. This is because symbols speak in a very old language, the language of the archetypes. The purpose of symbols is to bring the archetypes to life in your healing process. Symbols are yours alone, designed especially for you and your life will be enriched with them. That is their purpose. 3. SEARCH FOR THE MEANING OF YOUR SYMBOLS. There are professionals who have developed expertise in understanding symbols who can assist you. There are also written resources but please do not turn to a dream interpretation or symbol interpretation manual. These are often inaccurate or too general to be useful. The Internet can be useful, but be careful to check to see if what you find really means something to you emotionally. Symbols have a way of wanting us to think too much about them.
4. KEEP A JOURNAL OF YOUR SYMBOLS AND DREAMS.

You will want to refer back to the symbols and dream experiences you have had as they become a significant part of your life, and the best way is to keep an ongoing record of them. Note especially recurring dreams and symbols. Your psyche (soul) emphasizes what is truly important by repeating it. 5. BUILD YOUR DREAMS AND SYMBOLS INTO A STORY. In previous articles published in this magazine I have described
www.naturespathways.com

The best way to work with the process is with a professional who has lived through the experience, but everyone can embark on the work alone.
the process, which I have called Story Building. This is actually a focused version of an ancient process that has been used with people who have sought healing since the beginning of our living in cultures together. Building your experiences into a story wraps them in the sacred, and the sacred is what ultimately heals. Perhaps you have already noticed that these five points describe a process, beginning with one and ending with five. Each step has value, containing its own healing elements. The best way to work with the process is with a professional who has lived through the experience, but everyone can embark on the work alone.

of related disorders under the umbrella of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). DSM 4 had referred to these disorders individually as autistic disorder, childhood disintegrative disorder, Aspergers disorder (with very specific criteria for each) and pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified, which included all of those children who didnt quite meet criteria for the other diagnoses. The core characteristics of these diagnoses, in both DSM 4 and DSM 5, are dysfunctions in social interaction and communication skills, restricted interests and repetitive and stereotypic verbal and nonverbal behaviors. For those of us who work with these children, it became apparent that they do not sort neatly into DSM 4s diagnostic pigeonholes. In DSM 5, the need to label the exact category into which a particular child fits is removed and this should facilitate earlier diagnosis and, eventually, earlier treatment. The problem, of course, is that this definition describes only the behaviors we see from the outside. Since autism was first described by Dr. Leo Kanner in 1943, it has been a disease of that mystical organ called the mind. What was going on physiologically in the brains and bodies of these individuals remained a mystery. Search for a genetic cause has been largely fruitless. Yet even Kanner noted that these children, along with their mind disease, had a variety of medical problems. In his original paper he describes feeding difficulties, picky eating, vaccine reactions, constipation, malnutrition, thyroid problems and frequent infections. What Kanner recognized as a rare disorder with incidence estimated at 1 in 5-10,000 has exploded over the last three decades to reach almost pandemic proportions, a fact that defies genetic explanation. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report nearly 1 in 50 children in the United States are diagnosed with ASD as of 2012, up from 1 in 91 as recently as 2008. Today, we recognize a number of medical issues that are frequently found in children and adults with ASD. These medical

issues go by descriptions such as increased oxidative stress, decreased methylation capacity, decreased sulfation capacity, intestinal dysbiosis, mitochondrial dysfunction, decreased detoxification capacity with increased toxic metal burden and immune dysregulation with resulting inflammatory bowel disease and cerebral immune activation. Many of these same problems are shared by those with attention deficit disorder (ADD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). There is an extensive and growing body of evidence for an underlying immunotoxicological event in the development of autism, even though the exact biological pathways in the development of ASD remain to be fully discovered. What has become increasingly clear is that ASD is not the unchangeable mind disorder it has been treated as for the last 70 years. These children and adults cannot simply be defined by their behavior; they are living beings with active pathologic processes that demand current medical therapies and additional medical answers. Even though the names may be strange, by addressing those identified problems of dysbiosis, methylation, sulfation, immune dysregulation, bowel inflammation and cerebral immune activation we can make profound differences in the behaviors of attention, focus, communication, social interaction, stereotypical and repetitive behaviors, and many others. Autism spectrum disorder is not behavior alone but a medical disease, a physiologic condition that, with nutritional and biomedical interventions, can change the behaviors and the lives of those affected. If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder, ADD or ADHD and you would like more information, please visit the websites of Talk About Curing Autism (TACA) at http://www.tacanow.org and the Autism Research Institute (ARI) at http://www.autism.com.

Something to chew on
By Jodie Gruenstern, DVM, CVA

ogs need something to chew on, but how safe and effective are the chew items being marketed today? Several years ago there was quite a scare in regard to the presence of arsenic in rawhides and melamine in China-sourced products. Here are five tips for the best chew selection.

Consider the source

It is best to buy American made for this type of item because American manufacturers are keenly aware that the pet-loving population is concerned about safety. However, there is no guarantee that American made means safe. Any company can become profit-driven or be misinformed as to what is safest or healthiest for a dog. There are differences of opinion in this arena as well. One mans steak is another mans hamburger! Visit the manufacturers website and Facebook page to get a sense for their reputation and priorities. If organic and non-GMO and BPA free are important to you, then be sure the producer of your dogs chew things cares about these characteristics as well.

Consider your dogs size

Choking is always a concern. Be sure the chew item is big enough to not be gulped and caught in the pharynx. Take the item away when it gets small. If it is an edible item, be sure it will be chewed and ingested slowly over time. Too much of a good thing can cause a bellyache due to over indulgence. A small dog could have fun with a small or large rubber chew toy. A large dog could ingest and choke on a small rubber chew toy or develop an intestinal obstruction. A raw marrow bone that is too small and flat can get lodged in the throat or caught on the dental arcade. A marrow bone that is too large will be filled with too much marrow and will cause diarrhea. In this case, simply thaw the bone and spoon out and discard some of the marrow. Poultry bones can be safe and healthy if they are the right size and uncooked. Cooked bones become brittle because the molecular structure changes. They are not digested properly, so they are more likely to lodge or perforate the gut lining if they have been boiled or smoked. Whether your dog is little or big, a chicken neck may be appropriate if he is a chewer and not a gulper. A raw duck neck is slender and long: great for most medium to large dogs. Turkey necks in my opinion are too large of vertebrae for all dogs. These are the type of bone most likely to lodge. Do not feed turkey necks. Biscuit-style chew bones vary in size and quality of ingredients. Because these are edible, the ingredients and digestibility matter most.
www.naturespathways.com

Consider the ingredients

Biscuit-style chew bones, which are edible, often do not last very long. Those that do may be less digestible. Therefore, a small piece is likely to leave the stomach too soon and lodge in the intestines. Or it may roll around in the stomach, causing indigestion and even vomiting. If your pet vomits, or if large, discernible bits are seen in the stool, then this chew item is being poorly digested. This can even occur with tough, fibrous, dehydrated veggies. Most biscuit-style chews are starch-based. Realize this if you are trying to avoid feeding starch to your dog. The starch source might be potato, tapioca, wheat, corn, rice or another grain. These ingredients can be an excessive source of calories as well as potential allergens. They might be a source of unintended gluten or GMOladen food. Gluten and genetically modified foods can irritate the bowel and wreak havoc with the immune system.

ways to make them look clean for the human consumer. Smelly, natural, brown/ tan, bully sticks, tendons and tracheas are more natural, healthy choices for our carnivores! Beware of todays FDAinitiated efforts to sterilize all our foods. Many natural pet products are now being irradiated. This process can damage proteins, making them toxic. Purchase chew toys made from a quality rubber, not PVC-laden vinyl. Fiberglass-covered tennis balls wear teeth flat and can contribute to lip fold dermatitis. Ropey pull toys are often made with toxic dyes and are notorious for becoming entangled in the intestines.

Provide supervision

Always monitor how your pet handles a chew product. Ultimately, your pet needs to be able to count on you to keep him safe and healthy!

Consider the processing

The best chews are all natural or even organic. Avoid those that have been chemically processed. Cowhide typically rawhides are not so raw. They have been bleached or processed in other

The only thing one could do when hearing the word reiki was to discover it from a friend in another location.
In 1980, reiki was held in high esteem. The master, Dr. Mikao Usui, went through an unbelievable journey as he searched for healing answers and then brought his method to the planet. At that time, master teachers were very aware of the power inherent with being attuned to the reiki and the responsibility of bringing that experience to the public. It was a time when most reiki masters, when invited to teach a class, made themselves available to travel anywhere, anytime, to any location. It was their honor to play out the role of teacher. This healing method was completely new to the Western world, so the forming of classes developed slowly. The existence of reiki was unheard of for a number of reasons. If and when a potential student became interested and wanted to search out information about reiki, there was absolutely nothing available. Just imagine no books, no YouTube, no magazine

We are fortunate to live in a time of great change, a time when incorporating new knowledge is especially valuable in the world of healing.
articles and no discussions so no research. No one was around to answer any questions. What could you do? The only thing one could do when hearing the word reiki was to discover it from a friend in another location. Wisconsin did not have a reiki master. Here is what my small group in Milwaukee did. One day, a member of my group fell on the ice just before her drive to Chicago. She came back from Chicago having experienced a reiki treatment. After telling the group about a reiki class forming in that city, she asked us who would be interested in attending. The reason to share this history is to illustrate that the only way to make a decision to go or not go to the class was to check our own intuition to see if we were being drawn to this idea called reiki. The only thing to do was to intuit and trust our inner feelings to see if this class was our next adventure. That was then. Now things are very different. We are flooded with modalities based on having a healthy body, mind and spirit. Many, many more people are looking to gain greater wellness, inner strength and a more peaceful life. Now we have endless sources available to do research. In addition, the present research is blending reiki with the Wake Up movement and/ or personal transformation. As these two concepts, reiki and Wake Up, move in harmony with each other, new information appears. Now most of us understand our physical body is energy or atoms, as is our unseen extended energy body referred to as our aura. Here is why this information is important. The definition of the word reiki is universal life energy. The study of reiki, coming from its definition, shows us the importance of gaining knowledge about energy as it relates to every aspect of healing. Here is the important point: Since it is established that we as humans are really energy, then it seems logical to think in terms of first, we are the reiki, and second, we do reiki. Coming from our inherited spiritual self already blended with our physical self, we now present ourselves from a lifted perspective. By including the energy aspect of reiki, or any other healing modality, all practitioners can add another element to their personal understanding and well-being plus bring a greater depth to their healing practice. We are fortunate to live in a time of great change, a time when incorporating new knowledge is especially valuable in the world of healing. We open the door to the reiki world when we appreciate the difference in reiki from then until now.
Helen Borth was the first reiki master in Wisconsin in 1980. The director and co-founder of the Institute of Self Awareness (nonprofit in 1991) and a class instructor, she received a bachelors degree from UW-Milwaukee in 1958. She has years of research and application in the field of transformation and spiritual empowerment. leaves are aged then packed into bricks or cakes. Unlike other teas, which get stale over time, Pu-erh gets smoother and improves with age like fine wine. Some Pu-erh teas are more than 50 years old, and rare ones sell for many thousands of dollars in Asian specialty stores. Another unique quality of Pu-erh tea that distinguishes it from other teas is Pu-erh is made from a broadleaf variety that encourages microbial activity, resulting in a tea thought to have medicinal benefits including antifungal, anti-inflammatory and antimutagenic properties, as well as the ability to suppress fatty acid synthesis, which is associated with weight loss and the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. Pu-erh tea has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for generations to inhibit internal dampness (a term used in Chinese medicine to define buildup of internal energy due to the spleens inability to transform energy that it receives from the stomach) and to stimulate the activity of the spleen and stomach. Other traditional uses include the removal of toxins from the body, curing dysentery, weight loss, improving eyesight, promoting blood circulation and hangover cure for overindulgence of alcohol. There is interest in using Pu-erh tea for decreasing cholesterol because, unlike other teas, it consists of small quantities of a chemical called lovastatin. Lovastatin is a prescription medicine utilized for lowering cholesterol. Researchers believe that the bacteria that occasionally contaminate Pu-erh tea may somehow make the lovastatin in the course of their normal life cycle. Animal studies propose that Pu-erh tea might lower certain blood fats called triglycerides as well as total and bad lowdensity lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. It might also increase good high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. A study printed in the journal Experimental Gerontology in 2009 found that

rats given Pu-erh tea saw an extreme reduction in LDL, or bad cholesterol, and a rise in cardio-protective HDL cholesterol. Pu-erh tea has also shown enormous value for people suffering from metabolic syndrome a group of risk factors for cardiovascular disease which comprise high blood pressure, low HDL cholesterol, high fasting blood sugar, high triglycerides and abdominal obesity. Researchers at Beijing University found that Pu-erh tea looks likely to treat metabolic syndrome by improving obesity, beneficially adjusting blood lipids, decreasing blood sugar and inhibiting oxidation of cholesterol plaque. Another study conducted by the Department of Food Science and Technology, Chia Nan University of Pharmacy and Science called, Effects of Pu-erh tea on oxidative damage and nitric oxide scavenging, investigated the effects of fermented Pu-erh tea on oxidative damage and a nitric oxide scavenging agent compared with other brands of tea. The study shows that water extracts of Pu-erh tea displayed a significant protective effect in lipid (liposome) and nonlipid model systems, implying that it is an inhibitor of lipid and nonlipid oxidative damage. On the whole, these findings suggest that Pu-erh tea may play a crucial role in thwarting such oxidation-related diseases as atherosclerosis and other varieties of vascular diseases.

Breathe easier with chiropractic

By Patrick McCann D.C.

hile it may seem like a long way off, spring and warmer weather will eventually get here and our outdoor activities will pick up and soon be in full swing. This means heading outdoors for a walk, run, soccer practice, baseball practice or bike ride. We look forward to getting out each spring but for some, increased activity is difficult and can be scary at times. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, statistics show that more than 26 million Americans suffered from asthma in 2013 and more than 7 million were children. Asthma is a condition that inflames and narrows the airways. It can cause recurring periods of coughing, wheezing, chest tightness and shortness of breath. These symptoms affect the childs day-to-day life. The most common medical treatments are recognizing the triggers of asthma attacks and trying to avoid them, and for some people, an inhaler with a corticosteroid or bronchodilator is used. So while it is usually impossible to avoid all the triggers of asthma attacks, the only option that remains is to treat the

symptoms pharmacologically. This may provide relief, but it also increases the risk of possible side effects from taking these drugs. For instance, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) received reports of life-threatening respiratory problems and death in the asthma drug Serevent within the first six months of its approval in 1994. In December 2008, the FDA recommended

that Serevent and Foradil (another asthma drug) be taken off the market because of increased risk of severe asthmatic episodes and death from use. The big question that needs to be addressed is why are these childrens bodies unable to handle the changing of seasons, playing sports and just being a kid? What is causing the symptoms? The goal should be to find and correct the underlying causes of asthma, not just treat its symptoms. The public is realizing that better health through better chemistry (pharmaceuticals) is failing. More and more people are seeking alternative ways to provide relief and in many cases are able to completely control their asthma naturally. One of the ways people are doing this is through regular chiropractic care. Many people with asthma report good improvement after receiving chiropractic care. Why is this? The lungs and diaphragm (the muscle used for breathing) are controlled by your nervous system. The nerves that control these areas leave the brain, travel down the spinal cord and exit the mid-cervical (neck) and thoracic (mid-back) regions of the spine. When subluxations (misalignments of spinal bones that irritate nerves) are in these areas of the spine, they can interfere with the nerve supply to the lungs, causing the lungs to function abnormally. Chiropractors arent treating asthma, but by removing subluxations in the spine that restore proper nerve supply to the lungs, the lungs are able to function more efficiently and optimally, creating a healthier you. A study published in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research documented the results of 81 children with asthma who received chiropractic care. The two-month study revealed that those under chiropractic care who reported asthma attacks before the study saw a 45 percent decrease in the number of attacks, and 31 percent of the subjects voluntarily chose to decrease their medication. A typical case is that of a 6-year-old girl with three years of uncontrolled asthma. She was taking multiple prescription drugs to help control her asthma symptoms. After chiropractic care, the patient experienced an instant reduction in her cough and within 30 days she was no longer on any medication. Upon subsequent visits to her pediatrician she also had marked increase in lung volume. Continued research and case studies have shown that regular chiropractic care improves all aspects of our health and wellbeing. Isnt it time to see if you and your family can breathe easier with chiropractic care?

Making exercise a habit

By Courtney Fryatt, M.Ed., NASM-CPT, WLS
ow many times have you tried to lose weight? If youre the average person, youve tried several times. You may have even lost weight or reached your goal, but then it all came back because you stopped working out. This is an alltoo-common scenario as your life becomes busy and your health takes a back seat to all of the other things in life that are more important. The question is: How can you not make your health a priority?

Here are a few steps that you can use to make your health a lifelong priority:
1. MAKE A PLAN, WRITE IT DOWN AND STICK TO IT. Use a calendar to

write down when you will work out. First thing in the morning is usually best. That way you will be done and wont have to worry about it the rest of the day. You will also eventually come to realize that you have more energy throughout your day, even though you probably will have to wake up a little earlier.
2. SET A GOAL AND A DATE BY WHICH YOU WANT TO MEET THAT GOAL. Make it a realistic goal,

something attainable yet something challenging enough that youll have to make yourself work. Maybe you have a trip coming up in three months or some type of other life event. Use that as motivation to reach the goal that you set for yourself. Your goal can be to lose weight, fit into clothes that you havent worn in years or it might be just to work out three days a week. When you are first starting, make small goals that you can achieve. As you attain these goals, you will gain confidence and can set new goals. This is something you can continue to do for the rest of

times when an emergency cannot be avoided and there will inevitably be something that might throw you off track. This is okay as long as you start back right where you left off. This also goes back to working out first thing in the morning. If you exercise right away, even 20-30 minutes, you will have the rest of your day to deal with anything that comes your way without worrying and thinking all day about when youll work out. Make a plan, set an attainable goal, stick to your plan and dont make excuses! A recipe to lifelong fitness and health is the ability to be active in your life instead of watching from the sidelines.

Move of the month: Core energy (Shakti pull)

By Hope Zvara

ver think of your belly as the energy center of your body? Well, in yoga we have a word called agni, or digestive fire; this inner heat is stirred when we use the deepest part of our body. We cultivate this agni through eating the right food, but on our mat we cultivate this by using our body correctly. Many rely on the room being heated for us to sweat or get warmed up, but real heat is cultivated by using our deep core correctly. Not only will this help strengthen your midsection, but develop your lower three chakras, our identity center and roots into the earth, as well as produce a deep inner heat, one that affects every system in the body. Core energy is meant to help develop a deep pelvic-core (pelvic floor muscles plus torso core muscles), good shoulder girdle stability and balance.

To begin:

1. In a table top position (all fours) with your knees under your hips

and your wrists under your shoulders, bend the elbows and work to turn the folds of the elbows forward toward your middle finger without twisting the hands. Broaden your upper back without hunching in the mid spine, neutral your pelvis so the pubis bone and hip bones are parallel with the floor beneath you. 2. On an exhale, imagine that you are drawing your pelvic floor muscles (think bathroom muscles, not including glutes) and draw the bottom of your core in toward the base of your skull,
24
Natures Pathways | March 2014

a sense of rising, noticing on the exhale the lower abdomen contracting with that action as well. 3. Without shifting your body weight right or left, slowly extend your left leg out and back, keeping the hips square, and barely touch your big toe to the floor behind you. On your next inhalation, extend your right arm out to the right (like an airplane wing) or bend your elbow and, like combing through your hair, extend the arm forward with the bicep and palm facing inward. Work to be mindful to keep the arm up alongside the ear without rounding the torso. 4. Feeling length from your flexing foot to your reaching fingertips, keep your base-hand pushing and your shoulders relaxed from the neck. Hold here for a few breaths and on the next exhale, drawing from the pelvic-core (this is where the action starts), start to draw your floating knee inward and your extended arm in as well toward your chest and abdomen. As you pull the arm and leg in, round up through your back, being very mindful not to pull the leg into the chest with the free hand but rather with the strength of the core. 5. Inhale, and while working to be very steady, extend the arm and leg back out in a very controlled way, focusing on the length of the spine from heel to fingertips.
www.naturespathways.com

Focus more on form and using the right muscles, than on moving fast and wild.
6. Repeat this five to 10 times on each side and then go back to

your weaker side a second time and repeat again.

Tips:

Keep pressing into the base arm not to sit in the shoulder. As the body rounds, focus on the pelvic floor muscles pulling

inward and the front abdomen contracting deeply (think layers on the inside pulling inward). Flex the foot as the leg extends, reaching through the heel and point the toes as the leg comes inward, working to draw the heel to the glute when you round. Focus more on form and using the right muscles, than on moving fast and wild. Good Luck!

Metabolic what?
Metabolic efciency
By Elizabeth Bart, M.S.

aking a hard look at ourselves and making changes is not easy. To make changes takes work and help from others, something we are not always willing to do or obtain. When not seeing the results we want quickly enough, it is sometimes easier to quit than to keep going and work through the tough spots. One thing not often shown or discussed is how hard it is for everyone, at any age and any size, with metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is universally defined as the combination of dangerous risk factors that occur together and increase the risk of coronary artery disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. The syndrome is present with three or more of the following signs: Blood pressure equal to or higher than 120/80 mmHg. Fasting blood sugar (glucose) higher than 125 mg/dL; equal to or less than 125 mg/dL is good, less than 100 mg/dL is optimal. Large waist circumference (length around the waist). Men: 40 inches or more (hip-waist ratio less than 0.95). Women: 35 inches or more (hip-waist ratio less than 0.80). Low HDL cholesterol. Men: under 40 mg/dL. Women: under 50 mg/dL. Triglycerides equal to or higher than 150 mg/dL; less than 150 mg/dL is good, less than 100 mg/dL is optimal.

According to the International Diabetes Foundation: A quarter of the worlds adults have metabolic syndrome. People with metabolic syndrome are twice as likely to die from it, and three times as likely to have a heart attack or stroke compared with people without the syndrome. People at most risk of metabolic syndrome have the following characteristics: Central obesity. Insulin resistance. Aging (in less than 10 percent of people in their 20s, in greater than 40 percent of those in their 60s). Physical inactivity. Genetics. Ethnicity or race (Hispanic, Asian). Suffer from other diseases: polycystic ovary syndrome, CVD, diabetes. There is not a treatment plan for metabolic syndrome. However, everyday choices that lead to lifestyle changes with programs such as FirstLine Therapy and Metabolic Efficiency Training, along with regular medical checkups, are the pathway to metabolic efficiency. The two most effective steps for improving metabolic efficiency are, in large part, periodization and use of nutrient intake, concentrating on consuming proteins, fiber and some fats, and to a smaller degree, aerobic training in the target range of zero to 85 percent maximum intensity. You do not need to have metabolic syndrome to use metabolic efficiency training (MET). The four main reasons for using metabolic efficiency training are as follows:
1. DECREASES/ELIMINATES RISK OF GASTROINTESTINAL (GI) DISTRESS. Metabolic efficiency training teaches the

body to use fat as an energy source. This teaches the body to use internal energy stores from fat to fuel the body during exercise and reduces the risk of GI distress.

4. IMPROVES HEALTH MARKERS AND RISK OF CHRONIC DISEASE STATES. The health markers and risk factors for

taking in nutrients. It is about the bodys composition, its current internal fat and carbohydrate stores, the timing, types and quality of foods taken in and the ways in which energy is expended. This means what one eats and how one exercises can alter the bodys composition and performance. Metabolic efficiency training assists in nutrient partitioning. It improves fat adaptation by increasing whole body fat oxidation. Skeletal muscle is the tissue that is primarily responsible for increased fat oxidation during exercise after a short-term high-fat diet. As a result of altered substrate storage, increased fat oxidation is due to elevated intramuscular triglyceride (IMTG) concentration. 3. IMPROVES BODY WEIGHT AND COMPOSITION. Body weight is referred to as a persons mass measured in kilograms or pounds and body composition is the percentages of fat, bone and muscle. Two people of the same height and weight can have a completely different internal makeup and body composition. Metabolic efficiency helps us to understand and improve food choices, and thus reduces cravings, controls blood sugar (hormonal stability), improves satiety and increases thermogenic response through exercise activities, nonexercise activities and diet.

chronic disease states include mild to severe mood swings, insomnia or less than six hours of sleep per night, increased fasting, blood sugar and insulin levels, uncontrolled inflammation and loss of focus or decrease in memory. Metabolic efficiency has been shown to improve these markers and risk factors for chronic disease states by stabilizing emotional states. It improves the amount of restful sleep and the duration of sleep that assists with lowering fasting blood sugar and insulin levels. Inflammation becomes controllable. Improvements can be shown within a lipid profile and increases in focus and memory.

component of this plan is reading! Reading is a simple step which you can engage in immediately. If listening is more your learning style, most if not all of these books are available in an audio format. The more books you read, the greater your fund of knowledge. You get exposure to experts and thought leaders on a regular basis. How cool is that! What are some books you can start reading to enrich and renew yourself? These are a few of my many favorites.

Inspire 2 Succeed opens the door to your best you

Each one of us has a path to walk in life. We have those moments, those wake-up calls that reposition us on a road that creates its own path. While often challenging, its our experience of living through uphill challenges that ultimately makes us stronger. These times can be turning points toward positive change. Luckily, life provides guides who can support our trek through the most interesting times and give us the jewels to build our own bridges to success. Kim Hall is one such guide. Her organization, Inspire 2 Succeed, supports women in developing and relying on their intuitive gifts by learning to listen to the voice within, creating the best person they can be through trust, truth and faith. I live to maximize the potential of humanity, she declares. Every breath I take, every step I take, I question if my actions can maximize the potential in my life and those I encounter. Lending to Halls drive to be a positive force in others lives is the fact that she has encountered her own guides and messengers. It was a mentor and family friend, Carol Roberts, who rst opened Halls eyes to the world of meditation, numerology, reiki, handwriting analysis, the pendulum and more. It was the teachings from Roberts 13-year spiritual journey around the world that inspired Hall on her 12-year journey to expand her awareness and desire to learn more beyond the realm of religion. Roberts opened doors for all of us to experience more, tap into our intuitive gifts and trust that there was more to this world than meets the eye. She supported us to see our true colors, acknowledge and appreciate the treasure within, Hall says. Her classes gave us a taste of all she learned, enough to discover what we were drawn to and learn more. When Roberts passed away in 2011, the women who had learned and had so much fun through her meditation classes and womens weekends were left wondering who would carry on her teachings. Little did Hall know she would soon encounter another messenger this life-altering experience would be a sign she was smart to wake up to. It was Chinese New Year 2012 and despite the cold, Hall was on a Lake Michigan beach walk. Instead of trekking north along the beach as she usually did, this day she turned south. Curious to see if one beach connected to the next beyond the water plant, she persevered in her walk, despite the wind and cold of late January. She saw what looked like a door roughly a quarter-mile away when she rounded the corner at the pier. As she neared the door, though, she was bemused to nd that what she had thought was an entrance was in fact a spray-painted door-like shape. Turning to begin her walk home, Halls gaze fell to the bushes that lined the walkway. Leaning against them was the frozen body of a young woman. The woman, who was barefoot and sleeveless, looked as if she had simply laid down and gone to sleep, never to wake again, Hall recalls.

After shouting to her, Hall knew the woman had in fact died. She said a prayer for her and contacted the police. Were all messengers to each other. When things happen theres a reason for it, Hall explains. Shes the one who found me. A few days after discovering the young womans body, one of the responding police ofcers called to ask Hall if she was all right. The ofcer explained that the young woman had been missing for a long time. Her family was thankful that someone had found her. She was 22 and she found her solace at the beach, Hall says of the young woman. There are so many beautiful women out there who would love to nd solace in themselves, and if they did, they could go to the beach to nd joy. Discovering the young woman ignited a passion within Hall. She realized it was time to walk her talk and open a new door that connects women and children to their beauty inside by sharing all the jewels she had learned from Roberts. This was the spark that ignited Inspire 2 Succeed. For the past two years, Hall has led Inspire 2 Succeed retreats, meditations, mother-daughter events and womens circles. These practices are designed to help women center themselves in a way that enables them to listen to the answers within by focusing on one can at a time: one thing they can do. Her teachings make the messages of the body a priority. We use all of the best things to nurture and tune up our bodies during class, she says. This includes diffused essential oils, alkalized water and strange and delicious as it might sound healthy chocolates. Hall serves the women in her classes healthy chocolates, varieties of which can reduce inammation and soothe migraines, provide electrolytes and omega-3s, and burn fat. Hall also urges individuals to listen and to trust their inner voice.

woman, he may have said it like this: Our mind is the faithful servant, our heart the intuitive open door and our womb/home the sacred gift from which all knowing is. She teaches women to tune into their center, or womb space. It is from this space that women give birth to ideas and to life, Hall says. When women understand the gift of intuition, they are able to look within themselves to nd the answers, healing and soul-utions to their questions and make every day the best day. The more we follow our intuitive gifts, the better life becomes, Hall says. Through her work with the Ojibwa and other tribes, by traveling to six continents and as a licensed teacher in the Art of Feminine Presence, she bridges all of it together to open doors for women who are ready to tune into their heart and center space energy through her 7 Directions of Success series. Have you ever been in a room when someone walks in and is noticed by her presence and people ask, Who is that? When women are able to tune into themselves and their intuitive gifts, Hall explains, they are seen and heard without needing to say a word. This provides energy, self-condence and authenticity in any number of settings: at work in meetings, in family relationships, even when looking to attract a partner. It supports women in their efforts to be stronger, smarter and more in-tune to internal and external conversations. Ultimately, Hall sees her role as teaching women that life is about stepping forward with an attitude of one can at a time. When we focus on where we can go, what we can do and develop the faith and belief it is possible. That is where the magic happens, Hall explains. She supports women through innovative events, in which she educates and activates women to show up, step up and live up, guiding them with resources that support them to succeed and lead. Hall also guides them to the resources of many wise women around her who also have had wake up calls leading them to share their true gifts.

She explains that Roberts often said, Our mind is our faithful servant, and the heart the intuitive gift. Why is it When women have the key jewels the world focuses on the faiththat line up with the 7 Directions of ful servant? Later, Hall learned Success, Hall says, life gets this in fact is a quote better and women are able to from Einstein. She says, discover their treasure. Kim Hall is an educator, inspirer and motivational speaker. Had Einstein been a She completed her formal education in marketing through UW-Whitewater and Stout. Differentiating colic from acid reux

f infants were born with an instruction manual, early parenting would be much less stressful. Unfortunately for new mothers and fathers, tending to a baby is often a system of trial and error. Every child is different, and what works for one may not work for the other. Similarly, a child may be born who is easily comforted and takes to sleep, while its sibling seems to cry all day long. Getting to the root of those crying fits can prove rather challenging.

Colic

When crying goes on and on with seemingly no cause, this could be indicative of something more significant than just a fussy baby. Infants use crying as a method for telling their caregivers that something is amiss. Cries can indicate dampness, pain, sleepiness or other conditions. But crying with no apparent cause is defined as colic. Colic is not a disease but rather a behavioral condition. Babies with colic cry for seemingly no reason and very often at the same time each day. Nothing seems to comfort them. In addition to crying, the child may thrash around or clench fists. Some believe that colic has its roots in the digestive tract, where there is the presence of lots of air that may stem from slow intestinal motility. Others believe colic is linked to an overstimulated central nervous system. Still, colic is not a diagnosis, but rather a way to describe how a baby is behaving. The colicky behavior may be indicative of another underlying condition, such as acid reflux.

Acid reux

According to the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse, acid reflux affects more than half of all babies under three months old and usually resolves itself between the childs first and second birthdays. Acid reflux occurs when the lower
32
Natures Pathways | March 2014

esophageal sphincter, or LES, muscle remains open and enables stomach contents to flow back up through the esophagus and mouth. Infants have immature muscle development, and their LES may not open and close only when swallowing, enabling food to come back up. The reflux can occur when the baby cries, strains or eats too quickly. Symptoms may include excessive amounts of spit-up, crying and pain while eating. An infant may drink breast milk or bottles quickly and gulp the liquid down because it is soothing, only to find that this exacerbates the problem. Infants with reflux may begin to cry when lying down. They may also arch their necks and backs during or after eating or spitting up. Some children have silent reflux, where the acid does not come out of the mouth, but rather the baby swallows it back down. Reflux babies may learn to associate food with pain and can develop aversions to feeding. Whenever a child is exhibiting signs that go against the norm, parents can talk first to their childs pediatrician. Different feeding or sleeping strategies may alleviate some of the crying. Medication or surgery may be needed in extreme cases, and a parent may be instructed to visit a specialist in gastrointestinal conditions for an accurate diagnosis.

What is osteopathic medicine?

By Tracy Bretl, DO

steopathic medicine is a distinctive form of medical care based on the philosophy developed by Andrew Taylor Still (1828-1917) who stressed the concept of wellness and recognized treating the whole person. Osteopathic physicians use all modalities available through modern medicine, including medication and surgery. They can also use osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) which is a set of manual medicine techniques that can be used to diagnose injury and illness, relieve pain, restore range of motion and enhance the bodys ability to heal. DOs and MDs complete the same amount of schooling: four years of college and four years of medical school. They also both complete graduate medical education through internships, residencies and fellowships and must pass comparable examinations for licensing. DOs receive extra training in the musculoskeletal system the bodys interconnected system of nerves, muscles, connective tissue and bones which makes up almost twothirds of the bodys mass. Osteopathic medicine was founded by Still in 1874. Still was a Civil War surgeon for the Union Army. After three of his children died of spinal meningitis in 1864, he

felt the medical practices of the times were ineffective. He spent the next 10 years studying the human body and put forth four principles: 1. The human being is a dynamic unit of function. There are a number of unifying systems in the body. The circulatory system supplies blood to tissues and

organs. The nervous system connects and integrates all of the bodys functions. Another unifying system is a connective tissue matrix called fascia. Fascia is a continuous sheath of living tissue surrounding every muscle, organ, nerve and blood vessel from head to

The importance of a cleanse

By Rachel Warnock

ts no secret that our world is not the same as it was 100 years ago. Toxins are impossible to avoid in daily life. They come into our body through our air, water, food, lotions and hygiene products, our cooking and cleaning products. Its the kind of topic that can get real scary, real fast. But that is why periodic body cleanses are so important now more than ever. Ayurveda has been stressing the importance of body cleanses for the past 5,000 years, and has some of the most intense body cleanses available. Panchakarma, ayurvedas premier detox program, can reduce the lipophilic toxins, such as PCBs, by about 50 percent in the body. However, panchakarma can be quite pricey and time consuming here in the United States, and it isnt for everyone. Cleansing at home can be an easier and cheaper option, especially for those just wanting to get their toes wet. Ayurveda recommends four cleanses per year, one after every season, with the spring cleanse being the most important and the autumn cleanses importance not too far behind. Cleansing regularly helps the body to maintain a healthy weight, keeps the immune system strong and resets the bodys metabolism. Cleanses can assist in lowering cholesterol and blood sugar levels; clear the skin; waylay headaches, heartburn, indigestion and menstrual cramps; plus promote better overall health. We get our cars oil changed every 3,000 miles, so it makes sense to clean out our digestive track and other organs every three months as well. Another advantage is the cumulative effect. People who cleanse regularly (three to four times per year) notice better results in terms of immune strength and health management. So what does one do for this cleanse? A traditional ayurvedic cleanse is composed of three aspects: oleation, purgation and restitution. The oleation phase can be from three to seven days, during which the person is taking herbs or other solvents to loosen
34
Natures Pathways | March 2014

toxins from within the body. The individual is on a light diet and drinking plenty of tea or water. The tea will be a certain type of herbal tea chosen specifically for that person just as the herbs or solvents are chosen specifically by a person and will assist in the detoxifying process. The purgation phase is only one day. This is a day of rest for the person, ideally done on a day when one can be home from work and have no commitments. For this phase, a laxative is taken, usually castor oil mixed with juice, and all the toxins that were being loosened in the body are purged. Diet is very light on this day. It consists of broths, soups, and plain rice or veggies. The restitution phase is simply the three days following purgation during which one slowly returns to the normal diet. If one returns too quickly to eating heavier foods before the bodys digestive system is fully recovered, much of the good of the cleanse is undone. One of the nice things about ayurvedic cleanses is that there is no fasting involved. A person eats lightly, true, but never goes hungry. Cleanses can concentrate on a certain part of the body, like the liver, kidneys, blood or colon. Theres even a cleansing procedure for the eyes! Or it can be a total body cleanse. There are numerous cleanse in a box kits in stores, or you can give it a try this spring with an ayurvedic cleanse designed just for you!

toe. The primary function of fascia is to support and lubricate. The fascia provides a pathway for blood vessels and lymphatic vessels, along with nerves. These systems organize the body into a unified continuous whole. No single part exists independently. Thus, when a part of the body does not function correctly, the entire person is affected. 2. The body possesses self-regulatory mechanisms and has the inherent ability to heal itself. The human body is always working to maintain balanced function. Various systems in the body work to regulate blood pressure, heart rate and blood sugar. Wounds heal by inherent forces and processes in the body. At times, the bodys self-healing forces can be impaired by disease or structural imbalance. The osteopathic physician is trained to assist these mechanisms to help the body to better and more quickly heal itself. 3. Structure and function are interrelated. Every structure in the body is alive and in motion. When this motion is impaired, the tissues will not function as needed. This alteration can result in symptoms and may even result in disease. A dramatic example of the importance of structure and function is found in looking at the influenza epidemic of 1917-1918. Osteopathic physicians treated their patients with osteopathic manipulation and had a mortality rate of less than 1 percent, while those not treated with osteopathic manipulation had a mortality rate of 30-40 percent.

The body possesses self-regulatory mechanisms and has the inherent ability to heal itself. The human body is always working to maintain balanced function.
4. Rational treatment is based on the understanding of body

unity, self-regulatory mechanisms and interrelatedness of structure and function. An osteopathic medical approach to treatment typically integrates osteopathic manipulation to restore structural relationships in the tissues, enhance fluid movement throughout the body and create the optimal conditions for healing to occur.

Today, one in five medical students is attending an osteopathic medical school.

Reiki: So many choices

By Stephanie M. Best, Carey L. Garcia and Nicole M. Krakow

he foundation for all reiki is the intent to heal. A Japanese word (pronounced ray-kay) that translates to universal life energy, reiki has been utilized throughout regions all over the world to represent a holistic healing system. Usui reiki was introduced by Dr. Mikao Usui in the 1920s and is considered the

traditional reiki form. All other forms of reiki are said to have descended from this system.

Although categorized as complementary or alternative medicine, reiki is often used in combination with other methods and healing practices. There have been many different systems of thought and processes that have developed utilizing this universal life energy. Non-traditional forms of reiki and combined methodologies include: KARUNA REIKI: A system of energy healing that combines sounds endowed with power to heal. This form of reiki is often utilized to help overcome addictions. RAINBOW REIKI: A system that works with the seven main chakras. The healing intention is to promote self-understanding of ones true nature and promote overall healing. HOSPICE REIKI: A system utilized to provide comfort and ease anxieties of those who are in hospice care. KOMYO REIKI: A system that combines reiki energy on specific pressure points with massage techniques. The intent of this system is to increase

circulation and oxygenation to specific areas of affliction on the body. ACU REIKI: A system that utilizes reiki during a traditional Chinese acupuncture treatment to enhance the proper movement of qi. This technique is utilized to gently increase the healing effects of acupuncture. Is traditional reiki a form of massage? Does it include religious or Wiccan incantations? Is it dangerous or in any way harmful? The answer is no to all of those questions. Neither patient nor practitioner is required to hold a particular belief system for reiki to be effective. Traditional reiki in itself does not involve any physical manipulations to the patient. There is definitely no danger or risk of harm during a treatment. Reiki allows the body, mind and spirit to heal and clear obstructions itself by working with universal energy. During a traditional reiki session, the patient or client will lie on a table, fully clothed, and a trained reiki practitioner will lay his/her hands on or hover them just above particular areas of the patients body. This technique allows the reiki energy to flow into the patient or client by flowing through affected parts of the body. It is a noninvasive way to reduce stress, induce relaxation and promote healing. Inherently all forms of reiki use the same energy for treatments. Techniques may be combined and hand placement may differ, but the principle is the same. When seeking out reiki, be advised to err on the side of caution when you find someone who claims expertise in all styles or superiority in technique. Trust your intuition if it feels appropriate. Do your research. Ask questions. It is up to the individual to determine which method is best, whether as a patient

or as a student looking to learn. If one form does not suit you, look into others. Enjoy the benefits of reiki, wherever your search takes you!

whatsGROWINGon?

How Growing Power keeps growing

Growing Power growing food
By Will Allen

nduring a Wisconsin winter is no easy feat, especially when you are growing food. Growing food? Who does that in the dead of winter? At Growing Power, we do. Despite the abnormal weather patterns resulting from the polar vortex, Growing Power is growing food, full force, in hundreds of hoop houses situated in and around Milwaukee. Luckily, we are able to control the temperatures and environment a little bit more favorably in our greenhouses than what Mother Nature allows in our open fields. As we battle through extreme lows in the Midwest, growing our food indoors, our California farming friends are facing extreme drought, a weather condition much more intimidating and less manageable than the controlled environments of our greenhouses. As a local food producer and enthusiast, my goal is to improve food security in my community and help others learn how to help themselves grow food, too. Still, I am concerned about Californias situation. The California Central Valley has been referred to as our greatest food resource and if the farm crops are hurting there, we will feel the ripple effects of these low-producing crops across the country. The price of food will rise and we will have to find ways to feed ourselves and our families. Now is the time to start preparing. Now is the time to start learning how to grow your own food. If home gardening isnt for you, there are other emerging opportunities for accessing locally grown food. More and more communities see the value in farmers markets, which continue to grow in number and location. Food cooperatives, local food sections in large grocery stores, local food restaurants, community-supported agriculture shares (for example, Growing Powers Market Basket program), and community or school gardens are other ways to access locally grown foods. Most of all, do what you can to support local and sustainable

agriculture. When situations like the drought in California arise, it makes us realize our potential. Those high-priced strawberries may be the determining factor in pushing us to plant our own. For the past 20 years, Growing Power has encouraged people, communities, schools, farmers really anyone and everyone to grow food. Grow food: even in the middle of a polar vortex. As we continue to support others in growing food themselves, we have also ramped up our own local food production so much that we recently made the largest nationally local sale of carrots (36,000 pounds worth) to the Chicago Public School system, facilitated by FarmLogix of Chicago. These carrots were served to more than 400,000 students in one day. Understanding the amount of food needed to feed the Midwests largest public school district and that the truckloads of carrots provided by Growing

Power contributed to just one days meal gives our local agricultural economy an insight to its potential. At Growing Power, we hope to replicate this sale and help other local growers to do the same. We especially encourage and support schools in their efforts to grow food for themselves, through school gardens and onsite hoop houses. One such school in Milwaukee, Highland Community School, is on track to becoming one of Milwaukees premiere urban agriculture schools. Highland, a parent-directed Montessori school chartered with Milwaukee Public Schools, has implemented classroom-based agricultural projects, a school garden, composting, worm bins and demonstration aquaponics, and has plans to install a hoop house, fruit tree orchard and large-scale aquaponic systems, all this year! With a current transition to a farm-to-school meal program underway coupled with the close integration of its Montessori curriculum with all of these agricultural activities, Highland Community School is a great example for all schools interested in advocating for healthier school meals and improved, natural and sustainable learning Whats on environments. your lawn? Do horses need bodywork and chiropractic care in the winter?

By Amber Erickson, D.C.

intertime at my house means quickly throwing hay to bored-looking horses, followed by a quick pet, and then running back to the house! Many people continue to ride through the winter, but for some of us who ride outside, the risk of falling on the ice isnt worth the

little bit of fitness gained. However, those of you lucky enough to have an indoor arena probably ride all winter with ease. Exercise is just as important in winter, but hard exercise should be approached with caution because this will lead to sweat. A wet horse is a cold horse, and no one wants to spend three hours cooling out from an hour ride. I am frequently asked about continuing with a horses bodywork and chiropractic treatment plan in winter. If the horse is blanketed and is still in relatively normal work, then continue with bodywork care. If horses are mostly rested with plenty of turnout and they seem comfortable, it often is fine to take several months off from care. This depends on the horse, but many seem to do well with a nice winter rest. Getting a bodywork session performed even every other month can make a huge difference in helping a horse maintain condition throughout the winter. This can also help with identifying and correcting little issues before they become big problems during spring training time. This brings up blanketing. If you decide to blanket your horses, their blankets must fit correctly! Blankets also must be the correct fill weight for the weather conditions. A blanket that is too thin is counterproductive, and can be worse than not blanketing at all. In some cases, a too-thin blanket will compress the hair while providing too little insulation, and that can lead to severe frostbite. The majority of horses who are turned out and have access to good hay do not need to be blanketed. I occasionally choose to blanket for several reasons: a thin horse that cant seem to stop shivering, an elderly horse or a sick horse, and a horse that is continuing in hard work. I also blanket sometimes to stay ahead of any freezing rain. Horses with soaking wet hair coats cannot adequately warm themselves. If there isnt adequate shelter, or if the horses wont use the available shelter, blanketing horses before the rain begins can be a good solution to keeping the animals dry and warm. I do see some persistent bodywork muscle problems from blankets, so they must fit properly! A heavy blanket will add a

fair amount of physical weight, especially to the horses upper back and neck. Unless the blanket fits well, a horse will become very sore in these regions. Also, a blanket that is restricting and/ or rubs anywhere will cause the horse to change how he moves. This can lead to soreness throughout the body, especially if this is compounded by walking through deep snow and across ice. Muscle atrophy often is missed in wintertime, so if you blanket a horse, it is very important to pull the blanket off at least once a week to check for rubs and atrophy. Proper turnout and exercise is very important in winter as well. Horses require vitamin D just like people do. If horses are kept in box stalls during the day and only turned out fully covered under a blanket, they may become vitamin D deficient. This can be a very serious problem, so if you are concerned please discuss this issue with your vet. With people, its very easy to draw a blood sample and check vitamin D levels prior to adding a supplement. Turnout is also very important to keep a horse mentally and physically healthy. All horses enjoy some time to play outside, so turn your horses out as much as you can, even in winter! Spring training is often the perfect time for a tuneup. Remember, spring will be coming soon, so stay warm.

5 ways to spring forward

Maintaining balance between your thinking and comfort zone
By Jill E. Greinke

Hope springs eternal Alexander Pope, An Essay on Man, Epistle I, 1733 n just a few days we finally spring forward with daylight saving time in Milwaukee. The time change will bring much needed daylight. On the 20th, the spring equinox the official first day of spring will occur. It has been quite the winter for many of us in the northern hemisphere. And here in the Midwest, we returned to the kind of winter many of us adults remember when we were children extreme bitter cold, early snow, towering snow banks, etc. But with the hope of spring right around the corner, most of us are shouting, Amen to that! NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, gives a more in-depth description of spring: Spring is one of the four conventional temperate seasons, following winter and preceding summer. There are various technical definitions of spring, but local usage of the term varies according to local climate, cultures and customs. When it is spring in the northern hemisphere, it will be autumn in the southern

hemisphere. At the spring equinox, days are close to 12 hours long with day length increasing as the season progresses. Spring and springtime refer to the season, and also to ideas of rebirth, rejuvenation, renewal, resurrection and regrowth. Lets focus on the term spring from the perspective of local culture and customs. There are so many varied associations with it. Spring is one of the most important events in the cycle of life because of the chance it gives for us to start over. Spring rituals have been created to symbolize the seasons importance in the cycle of life and have been utilized by humanity since antiquity. Some of those rituals include fertility, such as hunting for eggs, cleaning our living spaces out and even tying up past financial dealings (doing our taxes). Those rituals can be tremendously important elements in our lives because they remind us of the constant capability life has to renew itself and start afresh. Well life will pass me by if I dont open up my eyes Wish that I could stay forever this young, not afraid to close my eyes. From the song Wake Me Up by Avicii Human growth and development experts state that we go through cycles or transitions throughout our entire life. No matter where we live or what we believe, certain emotional dynamics happen for each of us depending on what stage of development we are in. Despite the differences we go through during our various life cycles, one thread runs through it all constant change. One of the greatest challenges that we have is to be open to growth and change throughout our entire life from the cradle to the grave. I emphasize this with all of my clients. Older is a term that we usually believe means chronological age. By the time someone is 30, an ever-present notion to slow down and not move forward already begins to develop. It intensifies until the transition of ones death. But, if we want to continue to move forward in a healthy and

positive way, we have to work at thinking differently about it. We have to take ourselves out of rigid habitual patterns that have a tendency to try to freeze time and stop the cycle of life from happening. We have to work at changing the kind of automatic thinking that strives to keep us planted within our comfort zone. I want to challenge you today to get out of your comfort zone. You have so much incredible potential on the inside. God has put gifts and talents in you that you probably dont know anything about. Joel Osteen We all know what a comfort zone is. It can be positive or negative depending on the circumstances. Comfort zones can challenge us to come out of our shells and cope with the unpredictability of life. Staying within our comfort zone at all times and in all places creates the potential to keep us planted in the past and blocks any new opportunities from taking place in our lives. In other words, when we stay in our comfort zone for too long, we can end up suffocating to death. That may sound pretty ominous, but it just so happens to be true. Cycles help to create an ongoing balance. Balance is always a positive thing to strive for according to mental health experts. American psychiatrist Aaron T. Beck, the original developer of cognitive therapy, postulated that thinking creates our emotions, and that emotions create our behaviors. That is a cyclical process. Therefore, it is also imperative for us to maintain balance within this ongoing cycle. In doing so, we need to pay attention to how we think, feel and act as much as we can. Watch your thoughts; they become words. Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habit. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch your character; it becomes your destiny. Lao Tzu Here are five ways to maintain balance between thinking and being in ones comfort zone: 1. Dont embrace fear. Instead, stay in the vibration of love, a place where all things are possible. 2. Keep your thoughts in check hourly, daily by the minute if you can. Practice and know if your thoughts are conditioned (habitual, negative and unhealthy) or authentic (original, creative, progressive and healthy). 3. Spring into the new. That includes challenging yourself to find new ways to learn and grow physically, emotionally and spiritually. 4. Find ways to get quiet and connect with your spirituality so that you can begin to connect with a greater truth and wisdom. 5. Make and take the time to create new self-discoveries regarding your own thinking, inner truths and the rituals you practice so that you can learn to be flexible enough to maintain the balance while you maintain your never-ending growth.

Valerian
(Valerianaofcinalis)

alerian is a plant native to Europe and Asia; it is also found in North America. Valerian has been used as a medicinal herb since at least the time of ancient Greece and Rome. Its therapeutic uses were described by Hippocrates, and in the 2nd century, Galen prescribed valerian for insomnia. Today, valerian is used as a traditional remedy for sleep disorders and anxiety, as well as headaches, depression, irregular heartbeat and trembling. The roots and rhizomes (underground stems) of valerian are typically used to make supplements, including capsules, tablets and liquid extracts, as well as teas. Valerian is also sometimes called allheal or garden heliotrope.

on valerian includes studies on the herbs effects on sleep in healthy older adults and in people with Parkinsons disease. NCCAMfunded researchers are also studying the potential of valerian and other herbal products to relieve menopausal symptoms.

What the science says

Research suggests that valerian may be helpful for insomnia, but there is not enough evidence from well-designed studies to confirm this. There is not enough scientific evidence to determine whether valerian works for other conditions, such as anxiety or depression. Is your yard attracting troublesome ticks?

By Patti Beres and Jacob Beres

ulls-eye! This word commonly associated with a perfect shot at target practice is gaining equal recognition with a spine-tingling correlation to a tiny insect causing big trouble. The deer tick and wood tick (also known as the American dog tick) are similar in comparison, and are known to carry at least 11 recognized vectors of diseases. They share another common fact; in Midwest states from late March to early November, they can be lurking right at your doorstep. Experts agree that pesticides are the most effective way to control tick populations in your yard, but before you make a chemical-based decision, get to know your enemy and consider natural steps that may help you eliminate the need for pesticides by creating a tick-safe zone on your property.

loss and even death. It can also be transmitted to pets where symptoms are found to be similar. Lyme disease occurs when a deer tick unlatches itself after feeding from a deer, bird or other wild animal, then re-attaches itself to a person or pet. The disease takes 24 to 48 hours to transmit and is often accompanied by a tell-tale bullseye target appearing with or without symptoms of infection. Early detection is key for highly effective treatment.

Create a low tick environment

Identifying ticks

Creating a tick-safe zone means making the area as inhospitable for ticks as possible! Ticks dont like areas that are hard, hot or dry. Cool, damp, wooded areas and garden spaces provide the perfect environment for ticks.

Ticks are part of the arachnid family of insects. They are small, black and have a spider-like appearance. Deer ticks can be as tiny as a grain of pepper. Wood ticks are distinctly larger and have a faint design of markings on their back which deer ticks generally do not possess. Ticks cannot fly, jump or drop from above.

The three Cs: Clean, cover and carried

Lyme disease

There is currently no laboratory support showing evidence that wood ticks carry Lyme disease. In contrast, it is estimated between 7 and 20 percent of the deer tick population (in varied stages: larva, nymph (baby) and adult) carry Lyme disease. It only takes one diseased tick bite left unnoticed to leave a legacy of damage. Left untreated, it has been known to keep people bedridden for years with serious and dangerous longterm side effects including muscle, joint and organ debilitation, blindness, memory
www.naturespathways.com

Clean tick-attracting environments by clearing away brush, branches and leaf litter. Keep wood and compost piles far away from your house. Prune trees and thick dead wood from shrubs. Restrict overgrowth of ornamental ground covers and weeds. Keep grass neatly trimmed around border areas. Find ways to increase light and decrease dampness. Cover a 3-foot-wide by 3-inch-deep area with gravel or mulch to border surrounding woods, gardens, compost piles and lawn or play structures. Carried by unsuspecting wildlife such as deer, birds and mice, ticks venture too close for comfort to our human homes where they can detach from wildlife and re-attach to people and pets in the yard, or enter homes brought in by pets. Detract deer from entering your safe zone by using

deer-resistant plantings. Move bird feeders a comfortable distance from high human or pet traffic areas, especially during spring and summer when ticks are most active. Seal areas where small animals might try to penetrate or make homes, such as foundation cracks, stone retaining walls, screened porches or the area beneath your deck. Making simple landscaping changes to create a tick-safe zone in your outdoor green space can cut down tick populations by 50 percent or more. Natural precautions can also mean less demand for pesticide applications, which reduces your chemical footprint. The fact still remains that an estimated 70 percent of people who develop Lyme disease catch it from ticks in their own yard. Winston Churchill once said, We shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be we shall never surrender. If need should arise for defending your home despite natural efforts, seek a professional expert offering a low-toxicity pesticide treatment. Dont forget a daily tick check for each family member and pet. A little prevention and precaution is your best ticket for defending a springtime tick attack!

Sustainable kitchen
By Andee Warren

reating a sustainable home starts with the busiest room in the house, the kitchen! From kitchen to serving table, the choices we all make about what food we eat, how we prepare it and how we serve it make a big impact on our world. But dont feel overwhelmed by the big choices like energy-efficient appliances and sustainable furniture. Start with small, everyday choices, like what you eat, where you buy it and how you prepare it. Whenever you can, buy organic produce and whole foods. Organic farming practices forgo the chemical bath of potential neurotoxins and endocrine disruptors coating conventional produce in favor of traditional, sustainable practices such as biodiversity, soil fertility and crop rotation. Farm stands and farmers markets are wonderful resources, as are local health food stores. Not sure where to find your nearest farm? Check out the Farm Fresh Atlas of Southeastern Wisconsin (www.farmfreshsewi.org). Consider a vegetarian or vegan diet. Eating a plant-based diet can significantly reduce the amount of methane (a more powerful greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide) and even carbon dioxide produced to create your meal. Additionally, these diets have significantly positive impacts on your health. Even a partial vegetarian diet, such as the growing trend of meat-free Mondays, can make a difference. Now, lets look beyond the food, or

perhaps under it. With the growing concerns about the many chemical compounds contained in plastics, and the frequent headlines about contaminants such as lead found in imported products, many people have started looking to domestic goods made from materials such as glass and ceramic. Both glass and ceramic can generally be used in the microwave or oven and are dishwasher-safe. However, unless specified by the manufacturer, neither is recommended for stovetop use. Glass is great for baking as well as storing food before and after cooking. Though it takes longer to heat up than metal, it retains heat better for more even cooking, often reducing cook times and thereby energy use. Additionally, glass food containers have become popular since the FDA report on BPA exposure risks. Glass can be stored in the refrigerator and often in the freezer. Ceramic and pottery are also excellent choices for baking as well as serving, reducing the need for additional serving pieces. Like glass, they retain heat very well for even cooking. Additionally, they are generally more durable than glass and can be found in many different colors and styles. Stoneware or porcelain are the best choices as they are far more durable than earthenware and do not absorb liquids, even when unglazed. There are many commercially produced ceramic products; however, most are made in China.

While imported pieces might make lovely, decorative displays, to avoid the potential leaching of toxic chemicals they should never be used for food. These chemicals also become contaminants washed into the water supply and leached into landfills. Handmade pottery bakeware and tableware, however, can be purchased from local potters or pottery shops throughout the country. Handmade pottery is generally

ou have been experiencing difficulty sleeping. You may be snoring loudly or you may be gasping or choking at night or wake up feeling your heart racing. In addition, you may be excessively tired during the day, have morning headaches and be depressed or irritable. After seeing your physician and having a sleep study, you are diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea. If you have obstructive sleep apnea, your airway collapses during sleep and prevents

air from getting to your lungs. You stop breathing momentarily, which causes sleep disturbance and puts a strain on your heart. Once you are diagnosed with sleep apnea, your physician will prescribe positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy for you. PAP therapy gently blows air into your nose and/or mouth to prevent your airway from collapsing. There are different PAP devices utilized for therapy. The one you use will be determined by your physician from the results

of your sleep study. A continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device delivers a steady gentle flow of air throughout the night. Your physician prescribes one pressure to open your airway. Your device is set to deliver this specific pressure throughout the night, both when you breathe in and breathe out. A bi-level device is set to deliver two levels of pressure during the night, a lower pressure when you breathe out and a higher pressure when you breathe in. These devices are sometimes prescribed for patients who have trouble tolerating one constant pressure. An auto PAP device also can be utilized. This device senses your needs and provides variable pressures throughout the night. All of these devices are equipped with various features that can help make therapy more comfortable, depending on the manufacturer and the model. With our cold, dry Wisconsin winters, heated humidifiers are very important. Humidifiers are designed to add moisture to the air that is being delivered to you from the therapy device. Humidifiers will increase the moisture content of the air delivered and reduce some of the side effects of therapy, such as a dry nose and increased congestion. Masks are used to deliver the air from your PAP therapy device to you. A comfortable mask is a very important factor in being able to use your device nightly. Finding a mask that fits you and

your lifestyle is a key part of your therapy! Once you have found a mask that works for you, it is important to maintain it properly. Cleaning your mask and replacing it when it is worn down will help optimize your PAP therapy. PAP therapy can dramatically improve the life of someone diagnosed with sleep apnea. When you wear your PAP therapy system nightly, you may experience the following benefits: An increased energy level and attentiveness during the day, fewer morning headaches, reduced irritability, improved memory, less waking during the night to go to the bathroom, increased ability to exercise, increased effectiveness at home or at work, and improved overall quality of life. It is important to note that you will need to use your therapy device every night while you sleep (this includes napping). If you do not, you will return to your previous level of snoring, sleep apnea and daytime fatigue. Remember, sleep apnea doesnt just affect the patients. It affects everybody around them.

Getting to the heart of the chakra system with yoga

By Rhiannon Lucente

ith a traditional fitness and nutrition background, I initially gravitated toward writing about how to develop cardiovascular health through fitness and what foods to avoid in your daily diet. Recently, I have found it just as beneficial to look past all the clinical studies (and grueling training sessions) and I have chosen to share something that has created a deeper heart

awareness within me. Through the understanding and consistent practice of yoga, I have accomplished more milestones in my professional career, surpassed more goals in my athletic disciplines and generated more strength in my personal relationships. By utilizing asanas (poses) and pranayama (breathing), you also will notice how beneficial opening your heart chakra really can be.

The heart chakra (Anahata in Sanskrit) is the center of our bodies and the center of the seven chakra system. It is where the lower chakras of grounding, sensuality and drive are bridged with the upper chakras of expression, intuition and enlightenment. The element of Anahata is air, and since air permeates breath, an important way to begin balance is by practicing pranayama. Start by taking a seated position. Place your tongue on the roof of your mouth and slowly breathe in by drawing air all the way from the bottom of the belly to the top of the lungs. Pause at the top of your inhale and be aware of how the belly and chest have expanded; notice how the shoulder blades have naturally dropped down. On your exhale, release the tongue and constrict the back of your throat to create a warming effect as the air is released. Repeat this 10 or more times, observing how the body moves with your breath. Try practicing this outdoors (as weather permits) for a more connecting exercise. Asanas are another form of aligning your Anahata. An underactive heart can manifest itself by shyness, loneliness, inability to forgive and even lung diseases. The antidote for an underactive heart is to practice backbends in the form of the Reclining Cobblers Pose with a bolster, Camel, Bridge or Wheel. By removing muscle contractions that stem from fear, these poses help to surrender yourself
www.naturespathways.com

while developing trust. Allow your body to recognize the release of negative feelings as your ribcage expands remember to breathe while holding your asanas. An overpowering heart can manifest itself in codependency, possessiveness, jealousy, heart disease or high blood pressure. The antidote for an overpowering heart is forward folds, seated or standing. These positions foster introspection and create a sense of grounding, while allowing you to discover yourself without seeking nourishment from others. Be comfortable with the fact that you cant control certain aspects of life, and be confident that you are in control of your body. Again, ensure you are observing your breathing patterns. Lastly, the heart is associated with touch and action of the hands, so write, draw, paint, sing, sculpt, play an instrument, dance or even make an unexpected gift for someone! Express your unique personality as a way of opening and sharing your heart with those around you. While cardiovascular activity and heart healthy nutrition can set a solid foundation for the physical heart, internal chakra balance can work synergistically to weave a deeper mind-body connection. This whole-body approach allows us to be more adaptive and resilient to the various stressors placed upon our bodies. A regular yoga asana practice will serve to tone your energetic center through opening and strengthening the muscles and connective tissues at the front and back of the chest. Pranayama is one of the eight major limbs of yoga and the most powerful way to stimulate and awaken the wisdom of the heart chakra. Use it to your advantage. Dont ever take your artistic expressions for granted; they are the heart of who you are. (Sing your lungs out in the shower.) I hope you discover enlightenment, gratitude, balance, alignment and an open heart, as I did. Enjoy your heart-healthy journey! Namaste.

Jane gets a new lease on life with acupuncture

fter being in a major car accident and told I would not walk normally again without the use of a cane, I thought things were hopeless. I confided in my friends and family that I felt depressed and was at a loss over what to do next. To my surprise, a number of them urged me to see Sean Tsang at Tsang Acupuncture in Mequon. After suffering through countless hours of physical therapy and trying everything doctors told me to do with hardly a positive result, I thought, What could it hurt? and I gave Sean a call. From day one of walking into my first appointment with Sean, I felt right at home in his comfortable and warm office. He is a very kind, professional and welcoming man who obviously truly cares about his patients. When talking with him during my initial 1-hour appointment, I felt hope something I hadnt experienced in a long time. First we went through a health history, during which Sean really took the time to learn about me and what I was suffering from. Then he explained how acupuncture works. I admitted to him my fear of needles and he reassured me that the size of an acupuncture needle is only about that of a cat hair. In many cases, he explained, I would barely feel it going in. He was correct! The first acupuncture treatment did not hurt at all! Depending on the appointment and what

Sean is working on, I usually wear comfortable clothing, such as jogging pants and a tank top so he can easily access the areas needed. I saw Sean for three treatments in the first week and I instantly could tell something was working. My entire energy changed and I was feeling better and more positive. After my car accident, I developed a nearly unbearable constant high-pitched ringing in my ears. After just a few treatments with Sean, that ringing diminished to a lowpitched tone that allowed me to actually function. My treatments soon went down to two times a week and I can now stand without being in pain and yes, Im extremely happy to report that I can walk normally without a cane. I feel like a whole new person! I am now living life without pain or the need to take the painkillers once prescribed for me. Sean hasnt transformed just my life. After seeing the results I had, my sister sought out the opportunity to have her right shoulder feel better. She had been suffering from pain for years and had difficulty lifting her right hand above her head. After just three treatments with Sean, her pain was gone. She bragged that she felt like she had a completely new shoulder! My sister had seen acupuncturists before and she told me straight out: Sean is by far the best one I have gone to. I would not hesitate to recommend Tsang Acupuncture to anyone! I will continue to see Sean once a week to maintain my health. I recommend to anyone suffering from any pain or illness to keep an open mind and step beyond the limits of Western medicine. Try giving Sean Tsang a call. I promise you will not regret it!
