l protagonista de Materia dispuesta nace en 1957 durante un terremoto y despus otra sacudida ssmica marcar su vida. "Hasta la tierra es neurtica en Mxico. Es un pas que ha perdido la brjula, se trata de un entorno en descomposicin, donde no hay valores fijos, donde el camino ms corto para triunfar es la corrupcin", comenta Juan Villoro, uno de los novelistas ms prometedores de Amrica Latina, que aplica el humor a una sociedad "en eterna transicin". Mauricio Guardiola, el protagonista de Materia dispuesta, creci en una cultura que perdi la brjula y no sabe cmo ser autntica. En esta peculiar educacin sentimental, toda tradicin es absurda; incluso la tierra, marcada por los terremotos, se comporta en forma vacilante. En esta novela la religin, los lazos familiares, el teatro, la sensualidad, las calles, los olores y hasta las salas de bronceado ofrecen lecciones originales y no siempre edificantes. El antihroe de este proceso formativo es adicto a lo dulce, el tabaco y otros estmulos capaces de suavizar la realidad: enfrenta el mundo como materia dispuesta. Villoro prosigue la reinvencin territorial de la ciudad de Mxico iniciada en El disparo de argn y se apropia de otro escenario simblico -Terminal Progreso, la orilla donde la ciudad se mezcla con lo que queda del lago de los aztecas- para desplegar su irnica visin narrativa. Pero la irona no cuenta con grandes adeptos en Mxico y Villoro sostiene que "la literatura mexicana es tan seria y solemne que considera el humor poco elegante. A diferencia de muchos escritores, Juan Villoro (Ciudad de Mxico, 1956) fue fraile antes que cocinero, es decir, antes narrador que periodista. Director del suplemento cultural del diario La Jornada, . el autor reconoce que "las tcnicas

del periodismo, una actividad a la vez extenuante y adictiva, sirven para la ficcin". Su novela Materia dispuesta (Alfaguara) cuenta con dos protagonistas: el adolescente Mauricio Guardiola y la capital mexicana. "Es una novela de aprendizaje", comenta, "en una sociedad que tiene poco que ensear. Mauricio est dispuesto a aprender, pero el ambiente resulta poco edificante. No existen valores fijos como ocurra en anteriores siglos y no hay mrito social que supere a la impunidad". Con un estilo gil, sentido de la stira y una atenta observacin de detalles, Villoro describe ese paisaje social y fsico a travs de un personajeespectador que es tanto el protagonista como el novelista. "Guardiola aparece como un personaje pasivo que espera a que las cosas le sucedan, que presencia los hechos como un testigo, al igual que un escritor". Esta concepcin moral -"el lado suave de la toalla"- contrasta con el padre del protagonista -"un arquitecto partidario de la accin y del lado rasposo de la toalla". Villoro aborda una autntica caricatura de la "mexicanidad" y lo explica as: "No hay nada tan grave como ser tpico para uno mismo, y la cultura de mi pas ha indagado la mexicanidad como si hubiera una forma unvoca de ser mexicano". La novela de Villoro est muy enraizada en su pas, pero el autor defiende su punto de vista: "Muchas obras artsticas suelen tener un contenido muy local, desde La Iliada a las pinturas de Rembrandt. Ahora bien, hay que convocar un mundo particular pero de modo que le interese a mucha gente". Iconoclasta, gran aficionado al ftbol y postulador del mestizaje, Villoro considera que Materia dispuesta refleja lo que piensan muchos mexicanos jvenes. "La gente de mi generacin ya ha ledo autores de muchos pases y no est tan marcada por los grandes monstruos de la literatura latinoamericana, que ciertamente supusieron una losa para los escritores nacidos en la dcada de los cuarenta".

It is a country that has lost its compass, it is about a decaying environment, where there are no fixed values, where the shortest road to succeed is corruption, comments Juan Villoro, one of the most promising novelists in Latin America, who adds humor to the society he paints in eternal transition. Mauricio Guardiola, Materia Dispuesta s protagonist, grew up in a culture that does not know how to be authentic. In this peculiar sentimental education, every tradition is absurd. Throughout this novel, we learn some original (though not always edifying) lessons from various elements of life -- religion, family bonds, theater, sensuality, the streets, the smells, and even the tanning booths. The anti-hero of this formative process is addicted to sweets, tobacco and other stimuli capable of softening reality: he faces the world as materia dispuesta. Villoro continues Mexico Citys territorial reinvention started in The argon shot (El Disparo de Argn ) and takes another symbolic scenario as his own Progress Terminal, where the edge of the city is blended with the remains of Aztecs lake to unfold his ironic narrative vision. But irony does not have many adepts in Mexico, and Villoro sustains that Mexican literature is so solemn and serious that it considers humor to be less elegant. Unlike many other writers, Juan Villoro (Mexico City, 1956) was a narrator before he became a journalist. The author, director of La Jornadas cultural supplement, recognizes that journalism techniques, both extenuating and addictive, are good for fiction.

Materia Dispuesta (Alfaguara) focuses on Mauricio Guardiola, the teenager, and the Mexican capital. It is a novel about learning, but the environment turns out to be hardly edifying. There are no fixed values like in previous centuries, and there is no social merit that surpasses impunity. With a smooth style, a strong sense of satire and close attention to detail, Villoro describes this social and physical paradise through a character-spectator who serves as both the main character and the novelist. Guardiola appears as a passive character that waits for things to happen to him, witnessing events, just like a writer. This moral conception the soft side of the towel contrasts with the main characters father an architect supporter of action, the coarse side. Villoro approaches an authentic cartoon of Mexicaness and comments: There is nothing as grave as being typical to oneself, and my countrys culture has researched 'Mexicaness' as if there were a unanimous way of being Mexican. Villoros novel is deeply rooted in his country, but the author defends his point of view: Many artistic productions tend to have a very local and subjective atmosphere, from The Illiad to Rembrandts paintings. The trick is to have this atmosphere while simultaneously appealing to a broad audience. An iconoclast, a big soccer fan and a miscegenation postulator, Villoro explains how Materia Dispuesta reflects what many young Mexicans think. People of my generation have already read many authors from many countries not marked by the big monsters in Latin American literature, which were certainly paving stones for the writers that were born in the 40s.
