Chromium is the most important alloying element in
stainless steel. A specific chromium concentration
ensures the generation of a passive layer on the
surface of the steel that protects the base material
against corrosion. This explains the high corrosion
resistance of stainless steel.

The HALFEN cast-in channels "entirely of stainless steel" are
not restricted to any concrete cover since no part of them can
corrode.
Bridge and tunnel construction (e.g. fastening of pipelines)
Construction of sewage treatment plants (fastening of
spillover weirs)
Chemical industry (mountings exposed to aggressive
substances)
Ventilated faades, e.g. masonry veneer
For all structural reinforced concrete elements requiring
larger concrete covers
Corrosion protection of the mill finished weld-on anchor is
based on the following concrete cover c:
The HALFEN cast-in channels consisting of a high corrosion
resistance (HCR) material are a must in cases of high
concentrations of chlorides, sulphur and nitrogen oxides.

2011 HALFEN B 10.1 - E www.halfen.com
Installing the HALFEN bolts 4.1
Dependable assembly with HALFEN cast-in channels
HALFEN bolts can be inserted anywhere in the channel
slot, then turned 90 and locked in place by tightening
the nut. Do not position bolts at the channel ends past
the last anchor ( 25 mm from the end of the channel).
On channels with bolt anchors, the anchor locations can
be seen through the channel slot.
Lock set
The bolt heads must sit flush on both flanks of the
anchoring channel and locked in place by tightening the
nut with the torque wrench. Observe the torque values
shown in the table on the bottom of page 31.
Test
Positional marking at the tip of the shank of the HALFEN
bolts: After the installation, verify the proper alignment of
the bolts via the marking slot at the tip of the shank. The
slot must be oriented at a right angle to the longitudinal
axis of the channel.
Adjustable
The toothing causes positive interlocking and ensures load
transfer in the lengthwise direction of the channel,
eliminating any risk of slippage.

The tables following this chapter show the design resistances

The term "design value" represents the current standards
based on their new safety concepts and must be strictly
differentiated from the previous definition of "allowable
value".
Following the adoption of DIN 1045 -1 : 2008- 08, the
recent anchor channel approvals have also taken the new
safety concept into account.
As a result, the load capacity rating for channel and screw is
as follows:
To date, the verification process has not concurrently
become established in all industries. In the areas where the
"working load" is the basis, it is still the material on which the
admissible load per anchor channel certification is based. This
is the case for instance in machine and crane engineering,
which, inter alia, still go by global safety concepts. In these
cases the following conversion rule applies to the load
capacity values shown in the tables: (Exception: dynamic
loads page 22) :
According to the new standards (e.g. EC2, DIN 1045-1,
EC3, DIN 18800-1) the normal loads (working loads) are
multiplied by the partial safety factor
F
and the

normal load
capacity is divided by the partial safety factor
M
, yielding
the respective ratings identified by the index "d" (design).

with simultaneous loading in all directions
Explanations to pages 20 - 21
C Load capacity when concrete C30/37 - values in
brackets - admissible only when strain of the concrete in
the transverse direction relative to the longitudinal
channel axis is prevented by reinforcement (each one rod
BSt 500 S, d

8 mm in the area around the HTA anchor)
or by cross pressure.
When anchored in concrete of strength class C12/15, the
admissible loads for C20/25 must be reduced by a factor

Minimum component width b = 2 x a
r
applies in single channel conf.
Determined by channel height, length of anchor and necessary
concrete cover c per DIN 1045 -1.
Parenthesized anchor lengths for HTA 38/17 and HZA 38/23 apply
only to non-standard profiles with weld-on anchors.
Admissible only for centric tensile stress, and for HZA 41/22 also if
exposed to stress in the longitudinal direction of the channel.
In cases of transverse and inclined tensile load the distance from the
edge of the unstressed component may be reduced to a
r red.
= 0,5 x a
r
or
50 mm if, analogous to the figure on see page 24, an anchor
reinforcement is provided.
In cases of inclined tensile load 45 and transverse tensile stress per
pendicular to the edge spacings of 75 to 100 mm an anchor
reinforcement is required see page 24.
The minimum spacing specified in the table applies to reinforced normal weight concrete of all strength classes C20/25.
If increasing the spacing by 30% there will be no requirements to the reinforcement.

2011 HALFEN B 10.1 - E www.halfen.com
Di mensi oni ng
When used for instance in shelter construction, HALFEN
cast-in channels provide added protection for the
shock-resistant mounting of built-in components.
The following conditions must be met:
Minimum component dimensions, axial spacing and edge
distance per official approval ( page 23) must be observed.
For practical applications (normal operating and working
loads, static loads) the load values specified in the DIBt
certifications apply. Accordingly, static load components in
the longitudinal channel axis of HTA profiles are not
admissible. Instead, HZA channels must be selected.

onstruction specialists
consider the HALFEN
handrail connections type HGB
to be particularly well suited for
fastening banisters on the front
faces of thin deck and balcony
slabs.
Fast and cost-effective
adjustable anchoring
can be used even on thin front
faces of d 100 mm
bolts instead of welds or dowels
pre-engineered to reduce
construction time
permits later adjustment and even
simple replacement of all attached
structures
Safe and dependable
statically verified mounting
no damage to the concrete on the
visible front faces of the slab
while construction is in progress, it
can also serve to secure safety rails
(note DIN EN 795 Fall protection)
The associated high-strength HALFEN
bolts ensure secure and statically
solid attachment of the banister
structure

HALFEN HANDRAI L CONNECTI ONS HGB
Gener al
Balconies are a part of the structural
system. "They must be designed,
constructed, modified and maintained
in such fashion that public safety or
order and especially life, health or the
natural fundamentals of life are not
jeopardized". (MBO 07 and implementa-
tion directives)
In this context, the technical rules
established by public announcement
as regulatory building codes must be
observed.
Technical rules specify load parame-
ters, the calculation, dimensioning of
structural products, construction types,
structural layouts etc..
The individual federal states have established different building codes and regulati-
ons. In all cases the technical regulations require verification of structural safety and
functional fitness. The dimensioning of the banister mount must be backed up by a
static calculation or a regulatory certification.
4.2 (1) The contractor is required to perform the installation, at his own responsibi-
lity, in accordance with the contract. He has to abide by the accepted standards of
the art as well as the provisions of the law and regulatory directives. VOB Part B,
4.3, requires the contractor to report to the customer, in writing, any obvious design
flaws, which he, as the expert, must be able to recognize. He alone is responsible
for any resulting defect and consequential expenses. If he has satisfied his reporting
obligation, the responsibility for the defect (such as a frontal banister attachment
into too thin a concrete slab) passes to the customer.
Accident Prevention Regulation General Provisions (VGB 1)
Industrial Safety Regulations
ETB Directive Fall Prevention Components, version 1985
Stainless Steels, certification No. Z-30.3-6, of April 20th, 2009
DIN 1045-1: Support structures of concrete, reinforced concrete and prestressed
concrete; design and construction
DIN 1055-3: Action on support structures - part 3; intrinsic load and
superimposed loads for above-ground structures
DIN 1055-4: Action on support structures - part 4; wind loads
DIN 18800-1: Steel structures; design and construction
DIN 18800-7: Steel structures; verification of weldability
A regulatory requirement as part
of regional building codes refers to
structural stability: "Every structure as a
whole and in its individual components
must be stably self-supporting". This
stability must be statically verifiable on
the basis of technical standards (here
DIN 1055 Part 3+4).
Another regulatory requirement
addresses traffic safety, for example:
Balconies and loggias must have
fall-preventing safety banisters when
they border on an area that lies more
than 1 meter below. Up to a drop
height of 12m the minimum banister
height is 0.90m from the top surface of
Regulations, standards and directives to be observed when constructing banisters:
the finished floor or accessible ledge.
For drop heights greater than 12m
(except as per German LBOs) the
banister must be 1.10m heigh.
Other regulations, not covered here,
address the design, dimensioning,
banister spacing, fire protection,
thermal/sound insulation, and
rainwater drainage.

Identifying the HALFEN HGB cast-in channels
Galvanised:
Dipped in a galvanizing bath at a temperature of
approx. 460C, a method used primarily for open-
profile channels.
Stainless Steel A4:
Chromium is the most important alloying element in
stainless steel. A specific chromium concentration
ensures the generation of a passive layer on the
surface of the steel that protects the base material
against corrosion. This explains the high corrosion
resistance of stainless steel.

HALFEN HANDRAI L CONNECTI ONS HGB
Di mensi oni ng Fundament al s
The minimum height h
b
of a banister is 0.90 m from the top edge of the
finished floor or accessible ledge to the upper edge of the banister/balust-
rade. In the case of drop heights of more than 12.0 m (except as specified
in the applicable regional building code (LBO)), the banister must be 1.10
m high.
It would be desirable to have one uniform minimum height of 1.00m as
has already been mandated in the commercial sector and in some other
European countries..
An attachment with anchor channels or dowel systems requires
concrete at least of grade C 20/25. If the concrete is of less than a
grade C 20/25 or it is unknown, a case-by-case decision must be
made.
The thickness of the balcony slab must be at least h = 100 - 150 mm
(depending on channel profile according to german HGB approval) when
the HGB is mounted on the front face. Other mounting types and systems
require a thicker slab. All concrete-embedded mounts installed outdoors (e.g.
on balconies) must consist of stainless steel.
The structural design of the banister must take all fundamental requirements
into account. As a general rule, all banisters must be built in a way that a
person cannot fall through them, for instance between rods, lattice bars or
solid infill.
They should also be designed so as not to entice but instead to discourage
anyone from climbing over them.
The specific requirements for a banister are determined by the intended use
(private, public, commercial) and the drop height involved.
Also to be observed are the building codes of the individual federal states,
the ETB Directive Fall Protection Components and DIN 18065 (Stairs in
Buildings definition, rules, key measurements).
The forces bearing on the banister must be conducted into the
structural base. It will be necessary to verify that the forces
a) are absorbed by the banister itself and
b) can be transferred by the mounting elements into the deck slab.

1. Rail load h according to DIN 1055-3, Table 7
The actual horizontal loads per table 7 are to be as-
sessed at full height in the drop height and at 50% in the
opposite direction (but not less than 0.5 kN/m).
2. Vertical loads v according to BVM directive
For mounting, the following assumptions as per the BVM
directive: 2008 for metal banisters / balustrades
are made.
3. Wind loads Fw according to DIN 1055-4
7.1 (3) Wind and actual horizontal loads need not be
added together.
Except balcony parapets and pergolas, which serve as
escape routes. As per ETB Directive Fall Prevention

Material / Corrosion protection
The HALFEN trapezoidal metal sheet
mounting channels
were developed in cooperation with the
industrial association for light-weight
steel construction (IFBS).They consist of
a C-shaped channel with at least two
welded-on anchors, hot-dip galvanised
or of stainless steel and have been
approved by the German Construction
Materials Supervisory Board.
Approval No. Z- 21.4- 84
The connecting elements
for mounting between channel and
steel trapezoidal profile are considered
IFBS-approved per general technical
approval titled Connections for use with
structures employing cold profiles made
of steel sheet.
General
FV = Steel S235JR, hot-dip galvanised
A4 = Stainless steel 1.4571/1.4404/1.4401
Approval No. Z-14.1-4
Connecting elements: Stainless steel in concurrence with screw suppliers
Connecting elements: Steel galvanised as per app. no. Z-14.1-4 of the industrial association for lightweight steel construction (IFBS).
HALFEN HTU CAST- I N CHANNELS

approx. 460C,
a method used primarily for open-profile channels.
Hot-dip galvanised FV:
Stainless steel A4:
Chromium is the important alloying element in stain-
less steel. A specific chromium concentration ensures
the generation of a passive layer on the surface of the
steel that protects the base material against corrosion.
This explains the high corrosion resistance of stainless
steel.

2011 HALFEN B 10.1 - E www.halfen.com
Recommended butt joint gap between two channels
The pre-finished channel type HTU is to be embedded in the
concrete parts flush with the surface edge. It is advisable to
level the concrete surface and to apply a slight slope to the
outer edge of the concrete. This is to ensure that the trapezo-
idal sheet metal rests only on the HTU channel. According to
the german approval a heightened installation up to 5 mm is
possible. If, on the other hand, the manufacturer of the tra-
pezoidal sheet metal requires a total support width of more
than 60 mm, this can be achieved through a flush channel
installation and a flat concrete surface. A horizontal place-
ment, properly aligned, and centred in the case of trusses of
pre-stressed concrete, is to be ensured. Maintaining a
20 mm butt joint gap between the individual channel ends is
recommended.
The self-tapping screw is placed on the screw driver and is
fastened in one step without predrilling a pilot hole. Even
the 4-fold overlapping at joints does not pose a problem
with the self-tapping screw.
Use power screw drivers with approx. 1500 rpm and with a
socket wrench, size 10.
Suitable tools for the respective screws can be obtained
from the screw supplier.
The trapezoidal sheet metal must be attached in the central
third of the channel back; The screw must be positioned at
a minimum distance of 25 mm from the channel ends.

2011 HALFEN B 10.1 - E www.halfen.com
For attaching roof structures to concrete or reinforced
concrete ring beams and/or reinforced concrete slabs, either
continuous HTA HALFEN cast-in channels or short elements
HTA HALFEN cast-in channels are embedded in the concre-
te construction. The selection of the HTA HALFEN cast-in
channels as well as of the nailing straps and the nails is
based on the incident load (e.g., from wind force)
Calculation and design basics:
DIN 1055- 4:2005- 03
DIN 1052: 2008- 12
The timber fixing straps can be placed on one or on both
sides of the wooden beams. The load capacities FRd are
should be taken from the following table. With one-sided
placements, the beams are to be secured against twisting
(e.g. through nailing the upper formwork)
Typical attachment of wooden beams using HNA nailing straps on HAL-
FEN cast-in channels embedded in concrete.

In modern wood construction, rafter shoes type HSF 6/12 are
used to absorb the horizontal forces of rafter and collar
beam roofs.
The Advantages at a Glance:
Minimal planning effort, simply specify the profile and
location of the HALFEN channels to be embedded in the
concrete.
Clear static conditions through flexible mounting of the
rafter shoe. Type-tested statics, Test report No. 1. P
30 - 201/82, No. II B 3 - 543 - 506 Extension report.
No need for labour-intensive support constructions.
Simple and problem-free erection of the roof structure:
a) Rotatable arrangement of the support plate,
b) Movable nailing brackets for vertical anchoring
for different rafter widths from 0 to 120 mm.
c) Adjustable in the longitudinal rafter direction 15 mm.
Adjustable in the longitudinal channel direction of HALFEN
channels, allowing for different rafter spacings without
special additional provisions.
Excellent corrosion protection through hot-dip galvanisati-
on
The distribution of the horizontal forces into the concrete
structure occurs via officially approved HALFEN cast-in chan-
nels type HTA.
During assembly, ensure that the serration of the counter pla-
te engages in the base plate. The marking slot on the counter
plate must be oriented perpendicular to the direction of the
slot in the elongated hole.
C The maximum normal rafter strength is limited by the dimensioning
of the individual rafter shoe parts. Load tests showed an average
breaking load of 50 kN. With normal strengths that are greater than
the recommended load capacity (= about 1/3 of the breaking load),
the rafter spacing may need to be reduced, if required.
The minimum edge distance a
r
of the HALFEN cast-in channels can
be reduced with lower loads, see table page 23. The distance to the
outer concrete edge must be at least 170 mm.
It must be ensured that the HALFEN cast-in channels are installed
flush with the concrete surface.

When erecting the brick wall, the HAL-
FEN brick tie anchors are inserted in the
brick tie channels at any desired location
or at recommended distances and after
a 90 rotation pushed into the grouting
space mortar for anchoring.
HALFEN brick tie anchor systems are
efficient and proven mounting systems
for attaching brick work, infills, partitions,
facings (with and without air gap and/or
heat insulation) using HALFEN brick tie
anchors ML or BL to concrete walls and
concrete supports or to steel and wooden
structures. Due to the movability of the
brick tie anchors in the brick tie channels,
the risk of masonry settlement cracksis
reduced considerably.

Statically required attachments of load-bearing, room-enclosing
solid walls can be designed with HALFEN brick tie channels as
firewalls according to DIN 4102 T4 Chapter 4.8 as well.
Anchoring to the adjacent components (steel reinforced
concrete support, wall) fulfils the requirements for fire
conditions with regard to stability and fire resistance rating, if it
conforms to the standards of DIN 4102 T4 Para. 4.8.4
Attachment of a load bearing solid wall as a firewall accor-
ding to DIN 4102 T4 Para. 4.8.4 (Pic. 20.2)
Explanations, DIN regulations
Insulation layer: According to DIN 4102 T4 Line. 4.5.2.6
insulation layers in connecting joint gaps must [...] consist
of mineral fibre according to DIN 18165 T.2/07.91, Section
2.2, must be of building material class A, have a melting point
1000C according to DIN 4102 T. 17 and exhibit a gross
density of 30 kg/m [...].
Masonry: Bricks (gross density class) and minimum thick-
ness d according to DIN 4102 T4, Section 4.8.3, Table 45.
Note:
HALFEN cast-in channels HTA and HZA Dynagrip along with
HALFEN bolts are allowed for use in fire-exposed com-
ponents. The permissible loads for the HALFEN channels are
determined based on the bolt dimensions for a fire resistance
rating of 60 minutes (F60) and 90 minutes (F90) according to
technical approval. (see Certification Z-21.4-34 for
HALFEN cast-in channels HTA and Certification Z-21.4-1691 for
HALFEN cast-in channels HZA Dynagrip).
C

Product information
HALFEN brick tie anchors can be used at any desired
position across the total length of the brick tie channel.

Example: Corner guards on wall corners and pillars in an industrial building
Advantages:
The 92 angle ensures a tight fit to the formwork. Thus,
connection with the concrete is achieved and leakage of
concrete slurry between the formwork and the corner
profile is avoided.
The U-shaped concrete-reinforced anchors do not interfere
with the corner reinforcement and facilitate the assembly
of the reinforcement cage.
The concrete-reinforced anchors guarantee optimal
anchoring.
Low price due to serial production.

HALFEN CURTAI N WALL SUPPORT SYSTEMS HCW
Gener al
HALFEN Curtain wall system
This principle of construction is
characterized by an outer wall with a
continuous outer skin (see Fig. 1)
The curtain wall faade is to protect
the interior of a building from external,
undesirable environmental influences
and yet, if desired, permit eye-contact
with the outside through structural
components that can be opened and/
or are transparent. Specifically, this
In principle, one distinguishes between
two construction methods of curtain
wall faades: the post and beam
faade and the modular faade.
One basic differentiating characteristic
is the way the expansions within the
faade are taken up. The first possibili-
ty, known by the term post and beam
faade (see Figure 2) is that the vertical
and horizontal frame profiles are
lined up in a straight line in practical
production lengths, e.g., floor-to-ceiling
and segment--wide. They are installed
such that their longitudinal and trans-
verse ends are kept slightly shorter,
thus leaving room for a gap correspon-
ding to the necessary expansion. The
longitudinal and transverse connec-
tions are constructed in a moveable
fashion. The filler element (glass or
panel) installed in this post and beam
structure floats so-to-speak, and allows
for an expansion within the scope of
the installation clearance that was left
open. The glass and filler elements
are delivered separately and are not
installed until they are at the construc-
tion site, necessitating construction site
scaffolding. With the second construc-
tion method, the modular faade, (see
Figure 3), the faade is made of ele-
ments prefabricated in the workshop,
with glass, natural stone and panels
already integrated. For taking up the
expansions, the faade profiles are indi-
vidually telescoped into one another in
mazelike fashion.
This method of construction allows
the faade contractor to begin with
the interior work on the respective
floor immediately after hanging a
completely prefabricated module, since
a driving-rain protection is ensured.
In general, scaffolding is not required
with this method of construction.
means sufficient stability against wind
loads as well as enough insulating
ability against frost in winter, the heat
in summer as well as against external
noise pollution.
In addition, certain requirements must
be met in the event of a fire and other
disaster.
The post and beam faade and the modular faade.

HALFEN Cast - i n Channel HCW 52/34
Channel l oad dat a
Associ at ed HALFEN bol t s HS 50/30
Depending on the load size, we recommend the use of
HALFEN bolts HS 50/30 M16 and/or M20, grade 8.8 in
combination with the HALFEN cast-in channel HCW 52/34.
The bolt sizes mentioned below are manufactured in galvani-
sed design with a special coating. For interior use this design
is considered equivalent to a hot-dip galvanised design. Other
bolt sizes and materials can be supplied. Please contact us for
detailed information.

Load deformation diagram
Load F
res.

the concrete
The following average ultimate loads were determined from three
tests:
The adjacent load deformation diagram may be used to determine
allowable loads based on acceptable displacement and the required
safety factor according to local building codes. The diagram is based
on the following:
Tensile and transverse loads were increased at a ratio of 1:3 up to
the breaking point.
Concrete slab thickness 125 mm and reinforcement as shown on
previous slab.
Concrete strength class C 20/25 N/mm.
The load is transferred into the channel via two HALFEN bolts HS
50/30 M20 Grade 8.8. The bolt spacing is 150 mm. A sample
calculation is shown below. The safety factor is chosen arbitrarily.
However, the actual factors to be used must be analyzed based on
general project-specic conditions or building regulations in eect.
Calculation example: Assumed safety factor = 3 (ultimate test
load / working load)
Average ultimate load from the tests:
Transverse tensile stress F
V ultimate
= 142.3 kN
Tensile stress F
N ultimate
= 47.4 kN
Res. diagonal tensile load F
res,ultimate
= 150.0 kN
Actual working loads at the bolts (specification by faade stress ana-
lyst): Transverse tensile stress F
V
= 35 kN
Tensile stress F
N
= 10 kN
Perm. load with = 3 against average ultimate load from the tests:
perm. F
V
= 142.3 / 3 = 47.4 kN
perm. F
N
= 47.4 / 3 = 15.8 kN
perm. F
res
= 150 / 3 = 50.0 kN
Control: Working load F
V
= 35 kN < 47.4 kN
Working load F
N
= 10 kN < 15.8 kN
Working load F
res
= = 36.4 kN < 50 kN

Displacement at working load < 1 mm (s. diagram).
Actual safety factor for average ultimate load
1
= (150 / 36.4) = 4.12
F
V ultimate
= 142.3 kN
F
N ultimate

HALFEN CURTAI N WALL SUPPORT SYSTEMS
Edge of Sl ab Br acket s HCW- ED
Appl i cat i on exampl e
HALFEN Edge of slab brackets are connected in pairs to eit-
her side of the mullion and are available in two types:
Type HCW-ED brackets are designed to support both
vertical and horizontal loads.
Type HCW-EW brackets are designed to support
horizontal wind loads only.
The brackets ensure a convenient adjustability of the attach-
ment.
The HALFEN bolts (fastening of the bracket to the
HALFEN cast-in channel) and the regular hexagonal bolts
M12,(fastening of the bracket to the faade pillar) should be
of the strength grade 8.8.
A round auxiliary hole in the long leg of the brackets serves
the temporary attachment - e.g. by means of self-tapping
screws to the pillar- until the actual connection is established.
The brackets are made of high-quality aluminium material.
Special nylon discs are placed between bracket and pillar at
the "Wind load" - Bracket HCW-EW to reduce the friction.
bolt distance
To guarantee a correct assembly, the HCW-ED brackets are
marked R for right, L for left and UP for above.

HALFEN brackets HCW-B1 for the assembly on the top face
of the slab are available in two load levels and three collar
dimensions. The brackets are made of steel of the quality
grade S355 and are galvanised.
The vertical adjustability is 10 mm. In combination with
HALFEN channels HTA, three dimensional adjustability is
ensured. The lateral connecting plates are screwed to the
faade posts using M8 screws (not included). Concerning the
posts, the faade designer must provide a static verification
of the connection. The connection of the base bracket to the
HALFEN cast-in channel is established using HALFEN bolts
M16 Grade 8.8 (order separately). The connection between the
connecting plate and the base bracket can be made laterally
movable or as a fixed point depending on the faade type.
