Unexpected brake applications
If your train has been brought to a stand by an
unexpected brake application, not made by
yourself, you must immediately check the in cab
equipment indications, such as AWS or TPWS. This
will confirm whether an intervention has occurred.
Your indication that an intervention has occurred
are either the TPWS brake demand light flashing or
if previously acknowledged a steady light.
This event data will automatically be stored
on the OTDR equipment, now comprehensively
reviewed daily.
If there has been an intervention, you must carry
out the instructions in section 2, Module S3 Train
warning systems (AWS and TPWS) and reporting
signaling failures and irregularities.
For your information this procedure is listed below.
When an automatic brake application is initiated as
a result of the operation of TPWS, you must :
• Acknowledge the TPWS brake demand
• Make sure the train comes to a stand
• Immediately tell the signaller what
has happened
• Carry out the instructions you are given by
the signaller
• Not make any further movement of the train
until instructed.
The signaller will also ask a few set questions.
This is intended to capture any immediate
information available and address any
immediate risks.
If your train is brought to a stand by an emergency
brake application initiated by yourself. You still
must immediately check the in cab indications
such as AWS or TPWS to see if this equipment
has activated. If it has you must follow the
procedure above.
Once again remember OTDR will identify if this
has occurred.
If you are certain that the AWS or TPWS
equipment has not activated you must still make
every effort to report the emergency brake
application to the signaller, however do not delay
your service if unable to do so. Instead you must
report the incident to the signaller as soon
as practicable.
Remember that you must complete a report of the
incident by the end of your duty.
TPWS operation when approaching buffer stops
When an automatic brake application is initiated
as a result of the operation of TPWS when
approaching buffer stops, you must:
• acknowledge the TPWS brake demand
• after the train has come to a stand, move
forward to the normal stopping point if it is safe
to do so
• tell the signaller what has happened
• carry out the instructions you are given by
the signaller.
Emergency brake application initiated by the
passenger communication apparatus (PCA)
If the train is stopped because the PCA has been operated, you must:
• Find out the reason for the PCA being used and take
appropriate action
• If practicable, get the name and address of anyone misusing the
equipment and any witnesses.
You must tell the signaller about the circumstances.

It is important to remember that these are not new requirements but a simple reminder of the procedures
that you should be following. If you are unsure of what is required it is important that you contact your
