EPIC WORKSHOP ON 12th FEBRUARY 2009

New Developments in FTTH
Organised by Thomas P. Pearsall, EPIC
Location: room 18 of the Bella Center

The session seeks to inform customers who install and maintain fibre
networks about new services and capabilities that will improve the
performance of fibre-based systems in the next five-year period, thereby
stimulating investment in new networks and connections

10.30 - Thomas P. Pearsall, EPIC "Introduction to Access Technologies"

10.40
10.40 - Erwan Nedellec, France Telecom "Network Features for Higher Capacity,
11.05 Architectures and Services"

In proposing new IPTV bundles and other high capacity services, Telcos
have to overcome the well-known limits of xDSL technologies by
deploying FTTH technologies. These new architectures embed huge
capacity for services delivery but who really knows if they are future proof
enough. In my presentation, I will summarize the existing and future
stakes for a FTTH operator, based on field experience.
11.05 - Jim Everett, Photonics 21 "Photonics-21 and FTTH"
11.30
Photonics-21 is a European Technology Platform that develops priorities
for R&D funding by the European Commission. I will present our
recommendations on innovations that are needed to accelerate FTTH
deployment.
11.30 - Godehard Walf, Fraunhofer HHI "Access Networks for 10 Gbps
11.55 Everywhere"

Bandwidth demands of business and private users are continuously

increasing. Existing and future services such as peer to peer traffic,
exchange of high-resolution pictures and movies, Web-TV, 3D-TV, Super-
HDTV are some of the drivers for this trend. Access rates of 1 Gbps for
the middle-term future and up to 10 Gbps for the far future are predictable.
From the economical point of view, a lifetime of the access fibre plant as
long as 30 years or even more is an important claim. Therefore, flexibility
and scalability are the main issues that have great influence in the access
network structure chosen today. The same situation applies to broadband
future-proof home networks.
11.55 - Dr. Mike Wale, Bookham "Technology Routes for Cost-effective, High
12.20 Performance, Next-generation Access Components"

Economic implementation of broadband access networks that are truly

scalable in capacity will require significant changes in technology in
comparison with those deployed to date. We examine the component
technology challenges for future networks and propose some promising
solutions. In particular, we look at alternative cost-effective ways of
providing high capacity wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) in the
subscriber network, the role of photonic integration and options for optical
amplification in next-generation access deployments.
12.20 - Christophe Kazmierski, Alcatel Thales 3-5 Lab "Optical Devices for Future
12.45 Access Networks"
The presentation will describe European research on new optical devices
for next-generation access networks. Indeed, the increase of access
bandwidth and flexibility requires the development of new devices. Cost
issues will be discussed, since they are crucial for these networks. The
requirements and some R&D progress on optical devices for 10G-PON,
WDM-PON and budget and reach extension will be more particularly
described.
12.45 - David Smith, CIP "Technologies for Next Generation WDM-based FTTH"
13.10
There is increasing interest in a new generation of optical FTTH
architectures which can provide increased capacity by the use of the
wavelength domain. The WDM-PON architecture offers the dream
combination of contention free connectivity of point-to-point transmission
but with the fibre sharing benefits associated with a classical TDMA PON.
Whilst the vision of a dedicated wavelength to the home has often been
cited as the “end game” for FTTH significant advances are necessary in
the development of affordable but relatively high performance components
to achieve this. Early use of WDM in access networks is likely to have
more modest objectives and might be used to augment the capacity of
conventional time shared PON architectures. Based on our first hand
experience in developing enabling optical technology for “colourless”
WDM-PON architectures this paper will overview the current status of
optical components for use in next generation WDM based access
networks and discuss the cost/performance challenges.
