(for Steel Reinforcement and On-site Construction)

THE DETAILING COURSE

When engineers graduate they may know how to determine the bending moments and shear forces required to design beams, columns, slabs and footings but few know how to detail the steel reinforcement or know where the construction joints should be placed for each pour or the issues that may arise on site from poor detailing. Typical questions that often arise on site for the structural designer are: What reinforcement detailing is required for stairs or landings or retaining walls?

Ian Hymas B.Sc.(Hons) M. Eng.Sc

Ian has been a structural engineer for over 30 years and has specialized in steel structures for the past 20 years. As a founding partner of the firm Henry and Hymas, he has gained experience in designing steel structures, and as a consequence Henry and Hymas have had involvement in the design of several hundred steel and tilt-up buildings. The firm Henry and Hymas filled the gap in the marketplace between engineering consultancies and shop detailers, and have a department dedicated to providing dimensioned detailed drawings of steel, precast and tilt up panels, commonly for projects designed by other consultants. Ian is a member of the current BD-066 Standards committee for the Tilt Up & Precast Concrete Code AS3850. He was one of the founding members of this Code when it was first released many years ago.

9.00 10.30 Session 1 Practical Detailing Piers and Piles

Stamford Grand cnr Herring & Epping Rd, North Ryde NSW (02) 9888-1077

This session looks at the various reinforcement details that are required to ensure footings can be designed to work. Boundaries, column locations and off sets all cause concern for designers so this session addresses all these issues and gives practical on-site guidelines as to how to solve these problems practically. Localised soft soils or high water tables may require a redesign of a footing or one off adjustments to standard designs. 10.30 11.00 Morning Tea 11.00 12.30 Session 2 Practical Detailing for Slabs on Ground This session looks at the various reinforcement details that are required to ensure concrete slabs on ground can be designed accordingly to the detailing requirements of AS3600-2009. Again factors such as boundaries, soil conditions etc all cause concern for designers. This session addresses all these issues and gives practical on-site guidelines as to how to solve these problems practically. 12.30 1.30 Lunch provided at venue 1.30 3.00 Session 3 Practical Detailing for Columns and Walls

* Brisbane Mercure Hotel, cnr Nth Quay and Ann St, Brisbane QLD (07) 3237 2300 * Melbourne Hotel Grand Chancellor, 131 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne VIC (03) 9656-4000

What should be done when starter bars are in the wrong position? Where should construction joints be located to effectively control cracking? What is a practical spacing of joints? Is the reinforcement adequately distributed in your section?

Should the reinforcement in your footings be cogged or straight? Are sawn joints better than key joints in slabs? Should you thicken a slab on ground over a joint? What are the requirements for development length according to AS3600-2009? How do you handle penetrations in beams and slabs? What is the zone of influence for a strip footing over a buried pipe? How do you design for eccentrically loaded footings? When do you change your design from a square footing to a rectangular one? Do piers need to be reinforced for their full depth? What pile system works best for the design engineer or the piling contractor?

This session looks at the designing and placing steel reinforcement in columns and walls according to AS3600-2009. It then examines these requirements with respect to their practicalities. This session not only examines common reinforced concrete walls but also retaining walls and soil conditions alerting designers to the pros and cons of detailing such members. Heavily loaded columns or columns in high rise construction often have very high percentages of steel which can lead to congestion and possible spalling. These and other issues will be covered. 3.00 3.30 3.30 5.00 Afternoon Tea Session 4 Practical Detailing for Beams, Slabs and Stairs

How far can you bend a holding down bolt before it becomes ineffective? How do you tie in the reinforcement in stairs into the slabs above and below?

What should a designer do if they are confronted with on site boundaries that confine their standard footing designs? This course is designed to provide that raised level of awareness to the engineering personnel that may be confronted with these issues either in the design office or on the construction site. These and a multitude of other problems and solutions are provided in this full day course by a current practising structural engineer who has amassed over 30 years of design and construction experience.

This session looks at the structural design of beams and slabs in various forms of construction according to AS3600-2009 and then examines the detailing of such member with respect to practical solutions that still fit within the frame work of the Australian Standard. Real life examples will be shown of such elements (eg stairs and where the reinforcement is actually required in such members). Beams too often have the problem of congested reinforcement which then compromises concrete cover. 5.00-5.30 Certificates of Attendance and Feed back sheets handed out
