Complete the following form for the Invention and Innovation Patents Activity.

Topic 1: Book Binding

Patent Number: EP 2650137 A2 Justify why you believe this patent is more relevant or important than others to your topic. I believe that this patent is more relevant because it has proven to have more reliability performing as bookbinding device than others due to its heat-fixing operation with a simple structure. Would you consider this patent to be an invention or innovation? Explain why. I believe that it is an innovation because the device is heat sensitive unlike the other devices and this improves both performance and efficiency of the device. NOTE: Some patents can be argued to be either invention or innovation. Choose one and justify your statement. Patent Number: CN 203046499 U Justify why you believe this patent is more relevant or important than others to your topic. I believe that this patent is also relevant because this particular one uses a stapling mechanism rather than an adhesive heating design. Would you consider this patent to be an invention or innovation? Explain why. I believe that this patent is an innovation because there designs similar in both complexity as well as performance to this patent. Patent Number: EP 2127898 A3 Justify why you believe this patent is more relevant or important than others to your topic. I believe that this patent is more relevant than others because it has more efficiency than other models that have also been thoroughly tested. It also has a

feature where it can be adjusted by the thickness of the book itself. Would you consider this patent to be an invention or innovation? Explain why. I would consider this patent an invention because it is much more efficient, has an original design, and can be adjusted in whatever way for an individual book.

Topic 2: Ball Point Pen

Patent Number: US 20120328356 A1 Justify why you believe this patent is more relevant or important than others to your topic. I believe that this patent is more relevant than most because it has an ink guiding hole; it glides very smoothly while being written with, and has a design that allows sufficient ink supply. This improves efficiency when writing or drawing something. Would you consider this patent to be an invention or innovation? Explain why. I would consider this an innovation because I have seen similar designs like these in the past and they have had the same efficiency and materials as well. It honestly didnt me as something that was very different at all. NOTE: Some patents can be argued to be either invention or innovation. Choose one and justify your statement. Patent Number: CN 203126208 U Justify why you believe this patent is more relevant or important than others to your topic. I believe that this patent is also relevant because it a design that is quite simple which is advantageous over other designs. The pen allows ink to flow through very effectively and doesnt stop a continuous supply like other competitors do. Would you consider this patent to be an invention or innovation? Explain why. I would consider this an innovation because this particular design is also another that I have seen in some others, but this one low in cost as well as practicability. Patent Number: CN 203185907 U Justify why you believe this patent is more relevant or important than others to your topic. I believe that this patent is the most relevant of all because it is an automatic stretchy ball point pen that has a stretchy mechanism in the pen rod that allows it to counter the elastic force of a spring and driving the mechanism to work.

Would you consider this patent to be an invention or innovation? Explain why. I would consider this patent an invention because I have never seen a ball point design like this before. The pen is able to conform to the users hand and stretch to lengths that regular pens that have springs in them cannot.

Conclusion
1. Describe in your own words the difference between an invention and an innovation. An invention is a new device that is developed from extensive study, research, and experimentation. An innovation is an invention that has been modified in some way that is different or unique.

2. Describe the most interesting patent you discovered. The most interesting patent that I discovered was a patent that had to deal the ballpoint pen, CN 203185907 U. It was the most interesting to me because it had a very unique take on what a ballpoint pen should be like and how it should function. The stretchy mechanism mentioned numerous times in this patent was really something that I was very nice instead of a regular, stiffer pen.
