Advance and Proficient Art

Assemblage Art
What is assemblage art? It is an artistic process that consists of making a 3dimension or 2-dimension composition by putting together found objects. Found objects can include buttons, cans, yarn, fabric, trinkets, etc.

American sculptor who was known for her monochromatic wooden wall pieces and outdoor sculptures. Early on Nevelson experimented with conceptual art using found objects. The majority of her sculptures is made from wood and appears to be puzzle-like pieces that are intricately cut and place into wall sculptures or independently standing pieces.

Louise Nevelson 1899- 1988

Nevelson pieces are unique because they are painted in monochromatic black or white.

Jean Dubuffet 1901-1985

was a French painter and sculpture that embraced he so-called art brut or low art, which eschewed traditional standards of beauty. Dubuffet instead believed that there was a more authentic and humanistic way to approach making art.

Art Brut
Definition: Low art, or raw art is a term to designate a type of art outside the fine art tradition. Should be inventive, non-conformist art that should be perfectly brut, unprocessed and spontaneous, and emphatically distinct from derivative stereotypes of official culture.

The assemblage movement can be traced back to the early 1950s, where Dubuffet created a series of colleges using butterfly wings, although other artists like Picasso and Duchamp where already experimenting with this movement.

Group of Four Trees

Dubuffet sought to create an art as free from intellectual concerns (Art Brut), and his work often appears primitive and childlike. From 1962 he produced works in which he limited himself to the colors red, white, black, and blue. Towards the end of the 1960s he created mainly sculptures made from polystyrene and then painted.

Dianne Hoffman
is an assemblage artist of recycled and salvaged materials. In Hoffmans work she has a tendency to personify inanimate objects and have a genuine compassion for those damaged or disregarded materials.

She creates a small world in a box that allows her to create a certain concept. Hoffman also links organic objects from nature, and combines complimentary muted color schemes to create harmony.

Bring a sneaker shoe box (or larger box) to create the sculpture composition by Monday.

Things to consider:
Whats important when thinking of compositions? What role does color play in this project? Use problem-solving skills when coming up with possible solutions to the assemblage composition.
