a) American Samoa Lt. Governor Togiola T.A. Tulafono became governor on April 7, 2003, following the death of Governor
Tauese Sunia on March 26, 2003. Governor Tulafono was elected to a full four-year term in 2004.
b) Arnold Schwarzenegger was elected governor of California in October 2003 following the recall of Governor Gray Davis.
Governor Schwarzenegger was inaugurated on November 17, 2003. Governor Schwarzenegger was elected to a full four-year
term in 2006. Governor Schwarzenegger completes his second term in 2011. He is prohibited from seeking a third term.
c) Connecticut Lt. Governor M. Jodi Rell became governor on July 1, 2004, completing Governor John Rowland’s unexpired
term following Governor Rowland’s resignation. Governor Rell was elected to her first four-year term in 2006.
d) Absolute two-term limitation.
e) After two consecutive terms as governor, the candidate must wait four years before becoming eligible to run again.
f) Limit of eight years of service out of every 16 years.
g) Nebraska Lt. Governor Dave Heineman became governor on January 21, 2005, completing the unexpired term of Governor
Mike Johanns following Governor Johann’s appointment to the office of U.S. Secretary of Agriculture. Governor Heineman
was elected to a full four-year term in 2006. Governor Heineman will be eligible to seek re-election to a second term in 2010.
h) After two consecutive terms as governor, the candidate must wait four years before becoming eligible to run again.

l) Texas Lt. Governor Rick Perry became governor in December 2000 when Governor George W. Bush was elected President.
Governor Perry was elected to full four-year terms in November 2002 and November 2006.

p) New York Lt. Governor David Paterson became governor on March 17, 2008, completing the unexpired term of Governor
Eliot Spitzer following Governor Spitzer’s resignation from office. Paterson is eligible to seek a full term in 2010.
q) Arizona Secretary of State Jan Brewer became governor on January 21, 2009, completing the unexpired term of Governor
Napolitano following Governor Napolitano’s appointment to the office of U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security. Brewer is
eligible to seek a full term in 2010.
r) Illinois Lt. Governor Pat Quinn became governor on January 29, 2009, completing the unexpired term of Governor Blagojevich
following Governor Blagojevich’s removal from office. Quinn is eligible to seek a full term in 2010.
s) Kansas Lt. Governor Mark Parkinson became governor on April 28, 2009, completing the unexpired term of Governor Sebelius
following Governor Sebelius’ appointment to the office of U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services. Parkinson is eligible
to seek a full term in 2010.
t) Alaska Lt. Governor Sean Parnell became governor on July 26, 2009, completing the unexpired term of Governor Palin
following her resignation.
u) Utah Lt. Governor Gary Herbert became governor on August 11, 2009 following Governor Huntsman’s appointment to U.S.
Ambassador to China. Utah requires a special gubernatorial to be held in November 2010 to complete Governor Huntsman’s
unexpired term. Utah’s next gubernatorial election for a full four-year term will be held in 2012.
